The most common disease in the world is the cold. It often starts with a sore throat(咽部疼痛). You sneeze (打喷嚏) and your nose runs. You usually have a headache, too. Often you have a cough later. It's not a serious disease, but you can feel quite bad.
There isn't a cure (良药 ) for a cold, but you can take medicines to make you feel better. For example, you can take aspirin (阿司匹林) to get rid of your headache. It is good to rest, and to drink a lot of water, too. A doctor once told me, "With the right medicine, a cold will last for seven days. With no medicine, it will go on for a whole week!"
Where does our medicine come from? A long time ago, people understood that some plants made them feel better. They ate the leaves, the roots , the fruit or the seeds of plants. For example, the juice of lemons (柠檬) makes a sore throat feel better. In modern times, scientists have looked at these plants, and found out which chemicals (化学药品) are in them. Many of our medicines today are made from those chemicals. There are some diseases that we can't cure yet. And nobody has found a cure for old age. But because of modern medicines, the average (平均的) person now lives longer than their grandparents.

Well, Mrs. Evans, I’ve done my best to look after David. I’ve tidied his room up every day, got him a meal together whenever he needed one and made sure he’s always had a clean shirt to put on. It’s not been easy, with two of my own to worry about, as well. David had the best of attention, I must say. But now because I asked him to give up bringing that American friend to his home he has got quite miserable and unfriendly. He comes in at all hours and his behavior---- well, it’s quite hard to put up with---- and it’s all because of this friend. I’m sure he’s a bad influence. You see, David’s a visitor and doesn’t fully understand our ways.
He used to study most evenings. He’s got through quite a bit of work. He did up his room quite nicely, with bookshelves and large posters. He’d ask Mr. Smith and me up for a drink and cheer us up with songs from his country. He’s very good at the guitar, you know.
I don’t want to appear as if I’m running after him, but it’s about time we made it up. I’m sure he’s upset because I told him off. It might be a good idea to take him out for a meal, perhaps even with his friend. I don’t know whether it will do any good but we can try. I’m glad I’ve had this little chat with you, Mrs. Evans, and I’ll let you know how I get on.

As a young man, Al was a skilled artist. He had a wife and two fine sons. One night, his oldest son developed a serious stomachache.Thinking it was only some
1
intestinal (肠内的)disorder, neither Al nor his wife took the condition very seriously. But the boy
2

Knowing the death could have been

.To make matters worse his wife

were more than Al could handle, and he

8
the alcoholism progressed, Al began to lose everything he
9
— his home, his land, his art objects, everything.
10
Al died alone in a San Francisco motel room.
When I heard of Al's death, I thought that Al's life was a complete
11
.
As time went by, I began to reconsider my earlier judgment.I knew Al's now
12
son, Ernie. He is one of the kindest, most caring, most loving men I have ever known.I watched Ernie with his children and saw the free
13
of love between them.I knew that kindness and caring had to come from somewhere.
I hadn't heard Ernie talk much about his
14
.One day I worked
15
my courage to ask him."I'm really
16
by something," I said."I know your father was
17
the only one to raise you. What on earth did he do that you became such a special person?"
Ernie sat quietly and
18
for a few moments. Then he said, "From my earliest
19
as a child until I left home at 18, Al came into my room every night, gave me a kiss and said, ' I love you, son.' "
Tears came to my eyes as I realized what a fool I had been to
20
Al as a failure. He had not left any material possessions behind. But he had been a kind loving father, and he left behind one of the finest, most giving men I have ever known.

What kind of car will we be driving in 2020? Rather different from the
1
we know today, with the next 12 years bringing greater changes than the past 60. The people who will be
2
the models of tomorrow believe that
3
problems may well increase the speed of the car’s development. Today they are students on the
4
design course at London’s Royal College of Art.
Their imagination is of a machine with three wheels instead of four,
5
powered, environmentally friendly , and able to drive itself along
6
roads equipped with built-in power supplies. Future cars will
7
their fuel during long journeys from power companies built into the road, or store it in small quantities for travelling in the street.
This view of the future car is
8
on a much more super road system, with strips built into motorways to supply power to vehicles passing along them. Cars will not need drivers, because computers will provide safe driving control and route finding. All the driver will have to do is to say where to go and the computer will do the rest. It will become
9
for cars to crash into one another. The
10
already exists for the car to become a true automobile in the future.

Robert Moody, 52, is an experienced police officer. Much of his work involves dealing with
1
—an gang (团伙)problems in the schools of his community. Knowing that many kids often
2
trouble, he decided to do something about it. So in 1991 he began to invite small groups of kids to go fishing with him on his day
3
.
Those fun trips had a(n)
4
impact. A chance encounter(偶遇) in 2000 proved that. One day,
5
working security at a school basketball game, Moody noticed two young guys
6
.He sensed trouble between them.
7
one of them headed toward Moody and gave him a hug.” I
8
you. You took me
9
when I was in fifth grade. That was one of the
10
days of my life .”
Deeply touched by the boy’s word, Moody decided to create a foundation(基金会)that
11
teenagers to the basics of fishing in camping programs. “As a policeman, I saw
12
there was violence, drugs were always behind it. They have a damaging
13
on the kids,” says Moody.
By turning kids on to fishing, he
14
to present an alternative way of life, “When you’re sitting there waiting for a
15
,”he says, “you can’t help but talk to each other, and such
16
can be pretty deep.”
“Talking about drugs helped prepare me for the peer(同龄人)pressures in high school,” says Michelle, 17 who
17
the first program. “And I was able to help my little brother
18
drugs.”
Moody faces
19
in three years, when he hopes to run the foundation full-time.” I’m living a happy life and I have a responsibility to my
20
to give back,” Moody says.” If I teach a kid to fish today, he can teach his brother to fish tomorrow.”

As I listened, I closed my eyes.I found myself

those memorable moments. My mind was full of warm images of Russ as a loving, caring youth, a gentle soul,

his challenges. And now, as he stood at the platform, I knew his heart

his tutors would be if they could see him today. Here he was at twenty-nine, being honored for ten years of service as a volunteer

.Russ was

for organizing clothing for the homeless, teaching preschool children about fire safety, and for playing Santa Claus for very sick children by driving up in a fire truck.
Russ thanked his parents for providing him with dignity and for teaching him about morals. Then, pausing for a few seconds, he

us by surprise by touching lovingly on the

of his nephew, Austin.Austin was just three years old when he died from an incurable disease. At that moment, I had to close my eyes again

a different set of tears ran down my cheeks.A silence

the room as Russ owed his volunteer award to Austin. He

Once there lived a rich merchant(商人) and a poor shoemaker in the same house. The merchant occupied the second floor,
1
the shoemaker lived and worked in a small room on the first floor. The shoemaker was one of the
2
persons on earth. He worked from morning till night, singing merrily. His heart was filled with
3
, whenever he saw the boots and shoes
4
. Now the merchant upstairs was so rich that he
5
knew how much wealth(财产) he had. He was always
6
over his gold and silver coins far into the night. Even in bed his uneasiness(不安) about his riches kept him
7
. When at last he had been asleep for an hour or two, up came the song of the happy shoemaker, who was an
8
riser. It continued all day and was a(n)
9
to the merchant. Day by day the merchant grew more and more tired through want of
10
. He asked a wise friend of his how he could put an
11
to the shoemaker’s song. “Well, if I were you, I would give the shoemaker a hundred pounds,” answered his friend. “You are rich enough to do that, I suppose. Ask for nothing in
12
. Simply give the money.” The merchant
13
the advice.
When the shoemaker

the bag that had been sent by the merchant, he was
15
to find shining coins. “I must hide this from the eyes of my neighbors. If they see it, they will think that I have stolen it,” he thought. “I will

it away even from my wife.” So he hid the bag of money under the floor. From then on he
17
his neighbors as much as he could. His wife who had been the best
18
to him, became troublesome. Now his mind was too much set on the money bag to
19
to his work with diligence(勤劳). He could not sing merrily now.
20
he thought of the money bag, he became uneasy and unhappy.

becoming responsible to an employer in a job that might turn out to be a mistake for me.

15
be patient.

16
my twenty-fifth high school class reunion(重聚), I heard a former classmate
17
what she did for a living. She was a travel agent, and she and her husband had just
18
from a trip to Hawaii where they acted as guides for a group of travelers. WOW, that
19
like fun, considerably more fun and exciting than being a
