On June 5,1981 the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta, U.S. announced the presence of a rare, infectious disease in five American homosexuals(同性恋). Soon doctors were finding similar cases all over the country and the world. The AIDS epidemic(流行病)had officially begun. By 1983 it was clear that AIDS had spread around the world. More than twenty years later, AIDS has left twenty-six million dead and another forty million infected. AIDS has come the worst medical disaster ever experienced by mankind.

Hundreds of young people between the ages of 20 and 45 died each week during the early years of the U.S.AIDS. More than 600000 cases of AIDS have been reported since 1981 in the United States, and it is estimated that there may be as many as 900000 Americans infected with HIV.

Though the rate of HIV infections continues to increase in the United States, the number of AIDS cases has fallen sharply since 1996, when antiretroviral drugs came into the market Unfortunately, the AIDS epidemic continues today in Africa and much of Asia, where antiretroviral treatment is not available and health care is far from enough. AIDS is the fourth leading cause of death worldwide, and the No.1 cause of death due to infectious disease.

HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, was first separated in 1983 by a team at the Pasteur Institute in Paris. That discovery made it possible to develop a test for AIDS and trace back to victims who may have died before doctors were aware of the disease.

However, scientists still don't know exactly how and where AIDS started. Finding the source of AIDS could be important in developing a vaccine(疫苗)and be important in mapping the future course of the epidemic.

Foxes and farmers have never got on well. These small doglike animals have long been scolded for killing farm animals. They are officially regarded as harmful and farmers try to keep their numbers down by shooting or poisoning them.

Farmers can also call on the services of their local hunt to control the fox population. Hunters hunt a fox across the countryside, with a group of specially trained dogs, followed by men and women riding horses. When the dogs finally catch the fox they kill it or a hunter shoots it.

People who take part in hunting think of it as a sport; they wear a special uniform of red coats and white trousers, and follow strict rules of behavior. But owning a horse and hunting regularly is expensive, so most hunters are wealthy.

It is estimated that up to 100000 people watch or take part in fox hunting. But over the last couple of decades the number of people who object to fox hunting, because they think it is cruel, has risen sharply. Nowadays it is rare for a hunt to pass off without some kind of confrontation(冲突)between hunters and hunt saboteurs(阻拦者).Sometimes these incidents lead to violence, but mostly saboteurs interfere with the hunt by misleading riders and disturbing the trail of the fox's smell, which the dogs follow.

Noisy confrontations between hunters and saboteurs become so common that they are almost as much a part of hunting as the hunting of foxes itself. But this year supporters of fox hunting face a much bigger threat to their sport. A Labor Party Member of the Parliament, Mike Foster, is trying to get Parliament to pass a new law which will make the hunting of wild animals with dogs illegal(非法的).If the law is passed, wild animals like foxes will be protected under the ban in Britain.

Finding a suitable place to live is not easy for a student who first arrived in a strange place. I was lucky because I had booked a dormitory with the school before I arrived. It was a flat with seven independent rooms and a shared bathroom and kitchen. All of my flatmates are all students from Britain. I thought I was lucky to be part of this flat with these energetic young men. However, I found myself unhappy with them only a few days after I stayed there. These young people seemed never to be quiet. Usually they would not come back until late into the night. They even played football in the room whenever they like, whether it's early morning or late night. Worse still, they always had parties. Those loud music and laughter made me sleepless the whole night. Finally, I had no choice but to ask the authority to move me to another flat where most of the students were international students pursuing their master degrees. They were older in age and held heavier study burdens. So they were quieter.

My advice for those who want to study in the UK is to get in touch with the International Student Accommodation Service of your school first and tell them to arrange for you to share a flat with graduates before you come here.

The greenhouse is mainly used in planting of vegetables and fruits of long-season and adopts soilless culture, planting not grown in the soil but in rock wool of bowl size instead. The growth of plants depends on nutrition liquid fed to by the computer through feeding system.

All crops will be covered with considerate cares:When indoor temperature of the glass greenhouse is lower than best temperature needed by crops, the computer will automatically commands the heating system to increase the temperature till getting the best; When the temperature higher, computer will then commands the decrease system to adjust; When the plant is in want of nutrition, the computer will automatically test and prepare according to demands of plants purposely and feed the nutrition liquid to crops through burette.

Planting tomatoes here, harvest time 1asts 10 months for one planting time. The yield can be up to more than 46kg per square meter. That's to say, a workshop of 1000 square meters can yield over 500 tons, as more than 100 times of that of traditional field planting.

Factory planting has already had decades' history in western countries and been very popular in countries of Israel and Holland. In Holland, there are 4700-ha glass greenhouse in the whole country and Israel as a country of desert becomes a great exporter of agricultural products by adopting workshop planting. It is obvious that workshop planting is an effective way to improve yield of unit area of the land, save resources of land and water, increase quality of agricultural products, reduce labor intensity and produce healthful, advantageous products without pollution. Clone Technology Like Driving Cars

The recent death of the world's most famous sheep--Dolly the clone--has not dampened(使沮丧)the enthusiasm(热情)of Chinese scientists, who are working hard to make more breakthroughs(突破)in clone technology.

“It is hard to say whether Dolly died at a relatively young age or died from defects(缺陷)in reproduction.”Du Miao, a researcher with the Biology and Growth Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, told China Daily in Beijing yesterday.“But Dolly's case reminds us that both Chinese and foreign scientists should put more efforts into improving clone technology as well as disease treatment techniques in the field of cloning animals.” He said his institute, in co operation(合作)with Yangzhou University in Eastern China's Jiangsu Province, had cloned more than 10 sheep since 1999 and the oldest is nearly five. They are all still alive.

Li Ning, deputy(代表)director of the National Key Laboratory of Agricultural and Biological Technology, who is also a professor with the Beijing Based China Agriculture University, said, “Clone technology is actually progressing well. Dolly is the first cloned sheep after all. Like driving cars, new drivers meet with accidents more easily, but the more you drive, the easier and safer you feel. In the future, the death rate of cloned animals will be reduced with technological developments.”

“Official reports show seven locally cloned sheep are still alive. Clone technology in China is gradually approaching(接近)a level of commercialization(商业化),”Li added. The French interrupt each other's conversations. This is not rudeness, but proof that they are listening to what is being said and are quite interested to want to take part. What passes for normal attempts at conversation among other peoples may be supposed as bad manners by the French:“What do you do for a living?,“How much do you make?”,“Are you married?”, and“Do you have any children?”These are regarded by the French as one of your business. Better instead talk about art, culture, or best of all, politics. Everyone in France has views on these subjects--even the plumber(水管工)who comes to mend a burst pipe will be happy to discuss Voltaire(伏尔泰)with you while eating his lunch.

The French invented body language. To watch a gendarme on traffic control is to see an elaborate(精细的)modem ballet(芭蕾舞).

In conversation, Frenchmen's hands are never still. They give shape, form and size to ideas. They show the state of the mind, heart and soul. While others use the inflection of the voice to show how they feel. The French use eyes, hands, lips and shoulders to express a full rang of emotions. They kiss the tips of their fingers when they agree strongly with something or somebody. They pull the hand across the forehead, as though scalping(剥头皮)themselves, when they are bored. They raise their shoulders when faced by the ridiculous(荒谬).They stroke their cheeks with the back of the hand as a sign that they are bored. They purse(噘起)their lips and breathe out when they are angry.

They have signs for displeasure, doubt, ad-vantage, apology, amazement, surprise, puzzlement and failure, which is why it is considered very impolite to talk with one's hands in one's pockets.

I promised Michael I wouldn't mention this until the season was over. Now I think it's time.

Early last season, I wrote a column(专栏)about an act of kindness I had seen Jordan do to a disabled child outside the stadium. After it ran, I got a call from a man in the western suburbs. He said,“I read what you wrote about Jordan, but I thought I should tell you another thing I saw.”

Here it comes, I thought. It always does. Write something nice about a person, and people call you up to say that the person is not so nice.

A few weeks later Jordan and I were talking about something else before a game, and I brought up what the man had said. Was the man right? Had Jordan really been talking to those two boys in that poor and dirty neighborhood?

  “Not two boys,”Jordan said.“But four.”

And he named them. He said four names.

And what did they talk about?

“Everything,” Jordan said.“Anything. I've asked to see their grades so that I can check to see they're paying attention to their schoolwork. If it turns out one or two of them may need teaching, I make sure they get it.”

It's just one more part of Michael Jordan's life, one more thing that no one knows about, one more thing Jordan does right. The NBA season is over now, and those boys have their memories. So do I! When the expert reviewers begin to turn against Jordan, as they surely will, I'll think about those boys under the streetlight, waiting for the man they know to come, for someone they can depend on.

So long as teachers fail to distinguish between teaching and learning, they will continue to undertake to do for children that which only children can do for themselves. Teaching children to read is not passing reading on to them. It is certainly not endless hours spent in activities about reading. Douglas insists that“reading cannot be taught directly and schools should stop trying to do the impossible”.

Teaching and learning are two entirely different processes. They differ in

kind and function. The function of teaching is to create the conditions and the climate that will make it possible for children to devise the most efficient sys-tem for teaching themselves to read. Teaching is also a public activity: it can be seen and ob-served.

Learning to read involves all that each individual does to make sense of the world of printed language. Almost all of it is private, for learning is an occupation of the mind, and that process is not open to public scrutiny.

If roles of teacher and learner are not inter-changeable, what then can be done through teaching that will aid the child in the quest(探索)for knowledge? Smith has one principal rule for all teaching instructions.“Make learning to read easy, which means making reading a meaningful, enjoyable and frequent experience for children.”

When the roles of teachers and learners are seen for what they are, and when both teachers and learners fulfill them appropriately, then much of the pressure and feeling of failure for both is eliminated. Learning to read is made easier when teachers create an environment where children are given the opportunity to solve the problem of learning to read by reading.

The first paragraph is in fact a summary(总结)of the news item. It gives all the necessary information, what, when, where, how and why. The other paragraphs give full details of the subject. There may also be interviews with people. The words actually spoken by them are within inverted commas(引号).
