Mr.Fitzpatrick has given much attention to his“weight reduction”programs. Just last year, for example, when he was the main speaker at the company dinner, he said he had put on twenty pounds instead of losing the thirty he promised he would.

A team of scientists proved that seals had a very good sense of hearing. These men trained blind seals to expect food when they heard sounds. The seals always began snapping(猛咬) when a strong signal was sounded.

It was proved that even a soft signal, a considerable distance away, could make these sea animals respond. That should make the fisherman who makes much noise while working, or talks loudly, start thinking.

The same team of scientists also trained seals to recognize different sounds. One bell-tone meant food, two bell-tones meant no food. In the beginning, the seals made mistakes when the two bell-tones were sounded. They were given a light tap after each mistake. The seals were good learners. They easily learned to tell the difference between the sounds.

(1)Why was it necessary to use blind seals? Because they ________.

[ ]

A.were unable to use sight for clues

B.had better hearing

C.were waiting to be fed

D.were the only animals to be found

(2)To those seals strong signal meant ________.

[ ]

A.snapping B.nothing

C.food D.a light tap

(3)The article doesn't say directly but suggests that fishermen usually think ________

[ ]

A.seals have no good sense of hearing

B.seals have good sense of hearing

C.seals can only recognize bell sounds

D.seals can not hear soft or long distant sounds

Not everyone in the world requires the same amount(量) of living space. The amount of space a person needs around him is a cultural(文化的) difference, not an economic(经济的) one. Knowing your own psychological(心理的) space needs is important because they strongly affect your choices, including, for example, the number of bedrooms in the home. If you were brought up in a two-child family and both you and your sister or brother had your own bedrooms, the chances are if you have two children or more, that you also will offer separate bedrooms for them. In America, for example, they train people to want to have their own rooms by giving them their own rooms when they are babies. This is very unusual in the world. In many other countries, the baby sleeps in the same bed with his parents or in bed near them.

The space in the home also shows a lot about psychological space needs. Some families gather closer to each other and the size of their house has nothing to do with it. Others have separate little corners where family members go to be alone.

Although it is true that psychological space needs are not decided by economic reasons, they sometimes have to be changed a little because of economic pressure(压力). It is almost impossible, however, to completely change your psychological space needs.

D.Nobody needs a required amount of living space

(2)Some families gather closer to each other at home than others because ________.

[ ]

A.they have limited living space

B.they are brought up in a large family

C.it satisfies(满足) their psychological space needs

What is your favorite color? Do you like yellow, orange, red? If you do, you must be an optimist(乐观者), a leader, an active person who enjoys life, people and excitement. Do you prefer grays(灰色)and blues? Then you are probably quiet, shy and you would rather follow than lead. If you love green, you are strong-minded and determined(意志坚定的). You wish to succeed and want other people to see you are successful. At least this is what psychologists (心理学家)tell us, and they should know, because they have been seriously studying the meaning of color preference(爱好), and the effect(影响)that colors have on human beings. They tell us that we don't choose our favorite color as we grow up. If you happen to love brown, you did so as soon as you opened your eyes, or at least as soon as you could see clearly.

A yellow room makes us feel more cheerful(开心的) and more comfortable(舒服的)than a dark green one, and a red dress rings warmth and cheer to the saddest winter day. On the other hand, black is depressing(压抑). Light and bright colors make people not only happier but more active. It is a fact that factory workers work better, harder, and have fewer accidents when their machines are painted orange rather than black or dark gray.

Remember, then, that if you feel low, you can always brighten your day or your life with a new shirt or a few colorful things. Remember also that you will know your friends and your enemies better when you find out what colors they like and dislike. And don't forget that anyone can guess a lot about your character when you choose a piece of handkerchief.

Tim Berners-Lee is the man who wrote the software(软件) programme that led to the foundation of the World Wide Web. Britain played an important part in developing the first generation(第一代)of computers. The parents of Tim Berners-Lee both worked on one of the earliest commercial(商业的) computers and talked about their work at home. As a child he would build models of computers from packaging material. After graduating from Oxford University he went onto the real thing. In the 1980's, scientists were already using a primitive version(原始版本)of E-mail. While working at a laboratory in Switzerland Tim Berners-Lee wrote a programme which let him store these messages. In 1990 he wrote the HTTP(服务程序所用的协议) and HTML(超文本链接标示语言)programmes which form the basis of the World Wide Web.

The next year his programmes were placed on to the internet. Everyone was welcome to use them and improve them if they could. Programmers used his codes(编码) to work with different operating systems(系统). New things like web browsers(浏览器) and search engines were developed. Between 1991 and 1994 the number of web pages dose from 10 to 100000.

Who is there among us who hasn't dreamed of having his or her own small (maybe, several years later, even big) business, and having wonderful freedom, both from a boss and from the time clock; the freedom to make up our own rules for our work, and our own plans——arranging our own hours of work? That way work would be both painless and fun. Or, so we imagine.

Well, in fact it isn't quite as simple as that. Yes, it is true that being the boss has its satisfactions and that you can arrange your working hours freely if you own your own small business. But in those early years of starting your own business, you shouldn't think of a free day, not to mention flying off for a month's vacation. It is not unusual for new business owners to work seventy or eighty hours a week, and if there is a day off, that day might need to be devoted to accounting(算帐).

But this negative picture doesn't destroy the beautiful hopes. The possibility of getting something wonderful in return——both material and mental——continues to drive that large number of people who start up small businesses each year in the United States.

(1)From the first paragraph, we know that everybody hopes ________.

[ ]

A.to rule others

B.to be his or her own boss

C.to get a time clock

D.to be free from work

(2)Most new business owners have to ________.

[ ]

A.work more than 10 hours a day

B.devote himself to accounting

C.fly to some places in the world

D.have a day off in a week

(3)The expression“negative picture”most probably means “________”.

[ ]

A.a terrible experience

B.a poor picture

C.limited freedom

D.unpleasant situations

(4)The beautiful hopes will never be destroyed because ________.

[ ]

A.people love beautiful things by nature

B.people have a strong desire to seek personal gains

C.small businesses make big money each year in the US

D.small businesses have advantages over big companies
