It’s been quite some time since I was lost in London, but something happened during that   1   that I’ll remember as   2   as I live.

London had one of the thickest fogs in years. You could hardly see your   3   in front of your face. Cars and buses crept along, their lights   4   and their horns blowing madly. When evening fell, the weather got even   5   . The fog was as thick as pea soup. All traffic came to a   6  . I had an important meeting on the other side of the town, but it was   7   to find a taxi. I decided to walk, and started out confidently.

Minutes later I was   8   lost. I couldn’t   9   find a street sign to   10   where I was. Then I heard a voice come out of the fog. I suppose you are lost. Can I help you? I could hardly see the young woman who had spoken to me, but was   11   to find another person out in the fog. I explained where I wanted to go, and she said she knew exactly how to get there. I was doubtful, but followed her   12   the dark streets.

The city seemed as quiet as graveyard (墓地), and I remembered thinking my   13   could be leading me to a   14   street where she and some of her friends would   15   me. But my fears were   16  . The woman led me to my destination. I was amazed at   17   well she had found her way through the fog. I know this part of the town quite well, she explainedBut the fog—this terrible fog—made   18   impossible to see anything. I said.

It makes no   19   to me if it’s foggy or clear. You see, I’m   20

Last week I was invited to a doctor’s meeting at the Ruth Hospital for incurables. In one of the wards (病房) a patient, an old man, got up shakily from his bed and moved towards me. I could see that he hadn’t long to live, but he came up to me and placed his right foot close to mine on the floor.

Mrs. West, then about 75, was a strong, capable (有能力的) woman,   11   she had to be of course, because Frank   12   on her entirely. He needed all the attention of a baby.

One night a policeman came and told Mrs. West that her house had been   13   by a 500pounder. She lost nearly everything she owned.

14   that sort of thing happened; the rest of us helped the   15   ones. So before we   16   that morning, I stood   17   Frank and   18   my right foot against his. After that, his   20   to me was always the same.
