At lunch time one day, a week before her mother’s birthday, Sally decided to have a quick sandwich and a cup of coffee instead of her usual 1 in the college hall, and then go 2 near her college to try to find her mother a nice present. When she had been looking for half an hour, she 3 across a shop that was selling umbrellas cheap, and 4 that one of those would solve her problem, since her mother had lost hers the month before.

“Now which 5 shall I choose?”she thought. “Well, I think a black one would be the most useful really. You can carry that when you are wearing 6 of any color, can’t you?”So having made up her 7 , she bought a lovely black umbrella and took it back to the college with her 8 her classes had finished.

On her way back home in the train that evening she felt hungry because she had had such a small lunch, so she went 9 to the buffet car(餐车) for another sandwich and cup of coffee. She had 10 the black umbrella above her seat in the compartment, but when she got back, it was 11 ! When she had left the compartment, there had been no other passengers in it, but now there were three.

Sally burst into 12 when she saw that the umbrella was no longer there. The other passengers felt very sorry for her and asked what the 13 was. When she explained that the black umbrella she had bought 14 her mother had disappeared, and that she had to get out at the next 15 , the three other passengers asked her for her mother’s 16 , in order to be able to send the umbrella on to her in case someone had 17 it by mistake and not on 18, and brought it back after Sally had got out of the train.

The next week, Sally heard 19 her mother. Her letter said,“Thank you very much for your lovely presents, but why did you send me 20 black umbrellas?”

As the days went by, the chimp (猩猩) by the name of Maggie grew more and more 1 Tom and Peg didn’t sit with her very much now because it was too hard to look after her.

One afternoon mother asked Tom and Peg to keep Maggie out of 2 . At first everything went 3 well. Maggie played quietly, so Tom and peg went 4 to do their lessons.

Very quietly Maggie slipped out of the bedroom. She went straight into the kitchen, where she saw an open jar of jam. Down she sat and 5 it all.

When the jam was 6 , she slipped quietly down the hall into mother’s room. She opened the closet door and there hung all mother’s 7 . This was going to be fun! Out came the clothes, and Maggie began to 8 herself up.

By the time mother came back, Maggie had had 9 mother’s new spring hat and the skirt of her new suit. Jam stains were all over the skirt, all over the walls, and all over the closet(衣柜) door, too.

Maggie heard 10 coming into the bedroom. Quickly she reached up to turn off the closet 11 “Maggie!” screamed Mrs. Davis.

Both Tom and Peg jumped up and ran to see 12 had happened.

Maggie had never looked so 13 in all her life. But the children didn’t 14 . They heard their mother say 15, “Tom and Peg, this is all your fault! You promised to 16 Maggie!”

Mother started 17 to pull off her hat. But Maggie showed her teeth and acted as if she were ready to fight.

At that moment Father walked in. Maggie 18 down at once and ran up to him as if he were her only 19 Father took one 20 at the jam—covered hands and marched Maggie straight to the bath—room to wash herself.

The measure of a man’s real character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

—Thomas Macaulay

Some thirty years ago, I was studying in a public school in New York.  One day, Mrs. Manette O’Neill gave an arithmetic  1  to our class. When the papers were  2  , she discovered that twelve boys had made exactly the  3  mistake throughout the test.

There is nothing really new about  4  in exams. Perhaps that was why Mrs. O’Nei11 5   even say a word about it. She only asked the twelve boys to  6  after class. I was one of the twelve.

Mrs. O’Neill asked  7  questions, and she didn’t 8 us either. Instead, she wrote on the blackboard the  9 words by Thomas Macaulay. She then ordered us to 10  these words into our exercise books one hundred times.

I don’t  11  about the other eleven boys. Speaking for  12  I can say: it was the most, important single  13  of my life. Thirty years after being  14  to Macaulay’s words, they 15 seem to me the best yardstick (准绳), because they give us a 16 to measure ourselves rather than others.

17  of us are asked to make  18  decisions about nations going to war or armies going to battle. But all of us are called  19  daily to make a great many personal decisions. 20  the wallet, found in the street, be put into a pocket  21 turned over to the policeman? Should the  22 change received at the store be forgotten or  23 ? Nobody will know except  24 . But you have to live with yourself, and it is always  25  to live with someone you respect.

He started to paint. Suddenly he thought of a 1 to get his friends to help him do the work. “Aunt Polly told me to try very hard, and that is 2 I’m going to do.” He smiled and began singing.

Just then his friend Ben came 3 He laughed when he saw Tom painting. “What’s the 4, Tom? Does your aunt want you to work on such a nice day?”

Tom did not 5 painting. “Work? Oh, no, Ben. You see, painting is an 6 .First you must choose the right day, then you must get the best paint and brush. But most important of all, you must have the right 7. Aunt Polly says that there isn’t a boy in town 8 can paint this fence like me!”

Ben’s eyes opened wider. “Really, Tom? Let me try a 9.”

“Oh that isn’t possible ,” said Tom. “My Aunt Polly is very sure of the 10 she wants her fence painted.Remember, she chose me.”

“Come on, Tom, I’ll give you half my apple if you let me paint,” Ben 11 “Your aunt will never know the 12!”

“Oh, you’re wrong about that, Ben,” answered Tom. “She has very good  13. And think how I would feel 14  all,” she asked me to paint her fence.

“You may have my whole apple,” Ben said.“Give me the paint brush now.”

“Well, if you really think you can do it—here, 15 the brush but be very careful the way you paint.” Tom took a 16 into the red apple.

Half an hour later, when his friend had painted four 17 of the fence, Tom said, “You’re doing it quite well, Ben, but of course you need to do much more 18 you can really call yourself a painter.”

As each hour passed, Tom’s painting became more complete.  Each friend who happened to walk past took his 19 at painting a few boards — all for a price, of course. “You have to make them think it’s 20 wonderful,” thought Tom. “They’d never want to do it without paying for it.”

Well, I finished the bacon and eggs.I got up and made my way slowly to my room—at least five pounds   19   .I never believed until then that any meal could   20   me, but on that day I met my Waterloo (滑铁卢).

The western end of the factory was now on fire. And there, at one of the windows the fourth floor, two men could be seen. For some   1   or other they had left in the factory after the   2   of the workers had left. The thing was that they had not seen the fire approach. There have been many great inventions, which have changed the way we live. The first great invention was    1    that is still very important today—the wheel(轮子). This made it easier to

For hundreds of years after that there were few inventions that have as much    3   as the wheel. Then in the early 1800’s the world started to    4   . There was little unknown land in the world. People did not    5   to explore any more. They began to work so as to    6    life better.

The middle part of the 20th century brought new ways to help people get over   13   . They worked very well. They made people healthier and let them live    14   lives. By the 1960’s most people could    15   to live at least 60.

By this time most people had a very good life. Of course, new inventions    16   to be made. But man now had a desire to explore again. The world was    17   to man but the stars were not. Man began looking for ways to go into    18   . Russia made the first step. Then the United States took a step. Since then other countries,   19   China and Japan, have made their steps into space.

In 1969 man took his biggest step away from the earth. Americans first walked on the moon. This is certainly just a    20   thought. New inventions will someday allow us to do things we have never dreamed of.
