When we can see well, we do not think about our eyes very often. It is only when we cannot see perfectly that we come to see how important our eyes are.

People who are nearsighted can only see things that are very close to their eyes. Many people who do a lot of close work, such as writing, reading and sewing, become nearsighted. Then they have to wear glasses in order to see distant things clearly.

People who are farsighted suffer from just the opposite problem. They can see things that are far away, but they have difficulty reading a book unless they hold it at arm's length. If they want to do much reading, they must get glasses too.

Other people do not see clearly because their eyes are not exactly the right shape. This, too, can be corrected by glasses. Some people's eyes become cloudy because of cataracts(白内障). Long ago these people often became blind. Now, however, it is possible to operate on the cataracts and remove them.

When night falls, colors become fainter to the eyes and finally disappear. After your eyes have grown used to the dark, you can see better if you use the sides of your eyes rather than the centers. Sometimes, after dark, you see a small thing to one side of you, which seems to disappear if you turn your head in its direction. This is because when you turn your head, you are looking at the thing too directly. Men on guard duty sometimes think they see something moving to one side of them. When they turn to look straight at it, they cannot see it any more, and they believe they were mistaken. However, this mistake happens because the center of the eye, which is very sensitive(敏感的) in daylight, is not so sensitive as the sides of the eye after dark.

The Currier and Ives printing house was founded by Nathaniel Currier in 1834. James Ives joined the printing house as an assistant eighteen years later just after marrying Currier's sister, and became one of the owners in 1857. The pair showed an unusual ability(能力)to tell what the, American public would rush to buy in the way of cheap art, and actually hundreds of thousands of prints including as many as 7,000 different pictures were turned out and sold from the printing house's shop in lower New York by Street sellers and over shop counters(柜台)throughout the country and even in Europe. People often dream of living in a perfect place where no one would be poor, no one would be rich, and everyone would be kind to everyone else. Such a place is nowhere, and that's what the word“UTOPIA”means. It is made up of two Greek words meaning NOT A PLACE.

Early legends(传说)among the Norse, Celtic and Arab peoples told of a perfect place existing somewhere in the. Atlantic. These legends were no longer believed when explorations of the America began, but after More's time, it became common for writers to imagine and describe perfect“places”.

If there is any single factor(因素)that makes for success in living, it is the ability to be benefited by defeat. Every success I know has been achieved because the person was able to analyze (分析) defeat and actually learn something from it in this undertaking. Wrongly take defeat for failure, and you are sure indeed to fail. For it isn't defeat that makes you fail; it is your own refusal to see in defeat the guide and encouragement to success.

Defeats are nothing to be afraid of. They are common incidents in the life of every man who achieves success. But defeat is a dead loss unless you do face it, analyze it and learn why you failed Defeat, in other words, can help to get rid of its own cause. Not only does defeat prepare us for success, but nothing can cause within us such a strong wish to succeed. If you let a baby grasp a stick and try to pull it away, he will hold it more and more tightly until his whole weight is hung up. It is this same reaction(反应)that should give you new and greater strength every time you are defeated. If you make full use of the power which defeat gives, you can complete with it far more than you are able to.

(1)What does the author know?

A.He knows at least several examples of success.

B.He knows every success in life.

C.He knows every success that has been achieved by man.

D.It's not referred to in the passage.

B.to be afraid of his defeat

C.to let a baby grasp a stick

D.to make a living

(3)The author ________.

[ ]

A.advises you to mix defeat with failure

B.doesn't think failure is different from defeat

C.wants you to wrongly take defeat for failure

D.warns you not to wrongly take defeat for failure

A.One should explain it.

B.One should examine it.

C.One should make the most of it.

D.One should know its usefulness.

The biggest threat facing airlines today may not be a terrorist with a gun, but the man with the portable computer in business class In the last 15 years, pilots have reported well over 100 incidents that could have been caused by electromagnetic interference(干扰). The source of this interference remains unconfirmed, but increasingly, experts are pointing the blame at portable electronic devices such as portable computer, radio and cassette players and mobile telephone.

RTCA, an organization which advises the aviation(航空)industry, has recommended that all airlines ban such devices from being used during“critical”stages of flight, particularly take-off and landing. Some experts have gone further, calling for a total ban during all flights. Currently, rules on using these devices are left up to individual airlines. And although some airlines prohibit (禁止) passengers from using such equipment during take-off and landing, most are reluctant to enforce a total ban given as many passengers want to work during flights.

The difficulty is predicting how electromagnetic fields might affect an aircraft's computers. Experts know that portable devices give off radiation, which affects those wavelengths which aircraft use for navigation(航空)and communication. But, because they have not been able to reproduce these effects in a laboratory, they have no way of knowing whether the interference might be dangerous or not.

(1)The passage is mainly about ________.

[ ]

A.effective safety measure for air flight

B.a possible cause of aircraft crashes

C.the defects of electronic devices

D.a new regulation for all airlines

(2)What is said about the over 100 aircraft accidents in the past 15 years?

[ ]

A.They may have taken place during take-off and landing.

B.They may have been caused by the damage to the radio system.

C.They were suspected to have resulted from electromagnetic interference.

D.They were proved to have been caused by the passengers' portable computer.

(3)Few airlines want to impose(强加) a total ban on their passengers using electronic devices because ________.

[ ]

A.they have other effective safety measure to fall back on

B.they don't believe there is such a danger as radio interference

C.the harmful effect of electromagnetic interference is yet to be proved

D.most passengers refuse to take a plane which bans the use of radio and cassette players

(4)It can be inferred from the passage that the author ________.

[ ]

A.hasn't formed his own opinion on this problem

B.has overestimated the danger of electromagnetic interference

C.regards it as unreasonable to exercise a total ban during flight

D.is in favor of prohibiting passengers' use of electronic devices completely
