Decision-thinking is not unlike poker-it often matters not only what you think, but also what others think you think and what you think they think you think. The mental process(过程)is similar. Naturally, this card game has often been of considerable interest to people who are, by any standards, good thinkers.

The great mathematician John von Neumann was one of the founders of game theory. In particular, he showed that all games fall into two classes: there are what he called games of‘perfect information’, games like chess where the players can’t hide anything or play tricks: they don’t win by chance, but by means of logic and skills. Then there are games of‘imperfect information’, like poker, in which it is impossible to know in advance that one course of action is better than another.

One mistaken idea about business is that it can be treated as a game of perfect information. Quite the reverse. Business, politics, life itself are games which we must normally play with very imperfect information. Business decisions are often made with many unknown and unknowable factors(困惑) which would even puzzle best poker players. But few business people, find it comfortable to admit that they are taking a chance, and many still prefer to believe that are playing chess, not poker.

1.The subject discussed in this test is ________.

[ ]

A.the process of reaching decisions

B.the difference between poker and chess

C.the secret of making good business plans

D.the value of information in winning games

2.An important factor in a game of imperfect information is ________.

[ ]

A.rules
B.luck
C.time
D.ideas

3.Which of the following can be used in place of“Quite the reverse”?

[ ]

A.quite right.
B.true enough.
C.most unlikely.
D.just the opposite.

4.In the writer’s opinion, when making business decisions one should ________.

[ ]

A.put perfect information before imperfect information

B.accept the existence of unknown factors

C.regard business as a game of chess

D.mix known and unknown factors

A close friend of mine lives with six hundred wildlife on the Greek Island of Kyklos. Ever since he left school(where I first knew him), he has travelled all over the world collecting animals for his very own zoo. He hoped to collect at least two examples of every kind of animal on his island, like Noah before the Great Flood. But the flood that my friend was afraid of, was a flood not of water, but of people, I expect you have heard of my friend, he writes books about his travells, and about the wild and wonderful animals that he collects. Without plants, people could not live. We eat plants. We breathe the oxygen(氧气)that plants produce. And we need plants for another reason: we need them for their beauty.

Imagine a world with no plants. Imagine no flowers with their sweet smells, their beautiful colours and their lovely shapes. Imagine, when the wind blows, not being able to hear the leaves in the trees or watch the branches swing from side to side.

Everywhere people need the beauty of plants. That is why we have parks full of trees and flowers. That is why people always try to design houses with room for some grass and a garden.

Do you talk to your plants? Do you give them love and attention? Peter Tompkins and Christopher Bird, writers of a book called THE SECRET LIEF OF PLANTS, tell of an experiment in which two seeds were planted in different places. While the plants were growing, one plant was given love and hopeful ideas. After six months, the loved plant was bigger. When people become good at doing the things they like they find themselves.

Many young people are good at doing things they do not like, many other young people would like to do something at which they are not good. Also, many do not think they are good at anything, and do not know what they would like to do. None of them are happy.

It is impossible to decide whether one likes something until one has tried it. Trying something new is important.

Give each idea a fair chance. If you have decided to try out something new, also decided how long you will stick to it. Then you can make a fair decision.

The best thing to judge is not the final goal, but the work it takes you to reach that goal. Almost everybody would like to be highly skilled in something, but becoming highly skilled at anything calls for a great deal of time and effect.

Finding oneself means not only discovering what one is good at and what one likes; it also means discovering what one is not good at and does not like.

So trying something and failing can have its good side. It tells you that you are not fit for that particular area and should not use it as your goal.

1.None of the young people are happy because ________.

[ ]

A.they are good at doing things they are not fond of

As you are receiving my note by e-mail, it’s wise to remember how easily this wonderful technology can be misused, sometimes unintentionally, with serious consequences.

Consider the case of the Illinois man who left the snow-filled streets of Chicago for a vacation in Florida. His wife was on a business trip and was planning to meet him there the next day. When he reached his hotel, he decided to send his wife a quick e-mail. Unable to find the scrap of paper on which he had written her e-mail address, he did his best to type it in from memory. Unfortunately, he missed one letter and his note was directed instead to an elderly preacher’s wife whose husband had passed away only the day before. When the grieving widow checked her e-mail, she took one look at the monitor(屏幕), let out a piercing scream, and fell to the floor in a dead faint. At the sound, her family rushed into the room and saw this note on the screen:

Computer people talk a lot about the need for other people to become“computer-literate”. But not all experts(专家)agree that this is a good idea.

One pioneer, in particular, who disagrees is David Tebbutt, the founder of Computertown UK. Although many people see this as a successful attempt to bring people closer to the computer, David does not see it that way. He says that Computertown UK was formed for just the opposite reason, to bring computers to people and make them“people-literate”.

David Tebbutt thinks Computertowns are most successful when tied to a computer club but he insists there is an important difference between the two. The clubs are for people who have some computer knowledge already. This frightens away non-experts, who are happier going to Computertowns where experts to encourage them and answer any questions they have. They are to tell people about computers, but have to be able to answer all questions people ask. People don’t have to learn computer terms(术语), but the experts have to explain in plain language. The computers are becoming“people-literate.”

1.Which of the following is David Tebbutt’s idea on the telationship between people and computers?

[ ]

A.Computer learning should be made easier.

B.There should be more computer clubs for experts.
