“Don't put all your eggs into one basket” is a classic investment concept(投资理念). For China, the euro will become another “basket” for storing “eggs”.

Mr. Yang, a famous scholar, said that China should increase the proportion(比例) of the euro in its national foreign exchange reserve(储备) to reduce risks and preserve value.

By the end of November 2001, China's foreign exchange reserve amount to US $ 208.31 billion, ranking second in the world. The US dollar took an absolutely high proportion of it, adding up to 60 percent, while the Japanese yen and Deutsche (German) Mark only made up 15 percent.

Mr. Yang said that like businesses and individuals, a country should preserve(保持) property value. Since the currencies(货币) of different countries always have ups and downs, there should be a rational(合理的) distribution of different currencies in the foreign exchange reserve to reduce exchange rate risks and thus preserve value. In view of the trade proportions between China and its five major trading partners-the United States, Japan, Britain, Germany and France, the proportion of the US dollar in the foreign exchange reserve should be kept at around 45 percent in future, while the proportion of the euro should increase to 20~30 percent.

It is believed that the euro will become a world currency like US dollar. China has not only paid close attention to the euro, but also started to increase euro reserve. Finance Minister Xiang Huaicheng said, “I have noticed that the euro is becoming stronger recently. So I propose that leaders of the related department consider buying euros quicker and sooner, based on the principle of not putting all our eggs into one basket.”

Let's say you're a manager of a division targeted for layoffs. You've seen the list of employees to be cut, but you've been asked to keep the information secret for two weeks. Now imagine that an employee on the list asks you whether he should be putting a down payment on his first home.

If you don't tell him, then he could be heading into a financial nightmare. If you do tell, you obviously break confidence with your company. Word may spread, shocking enough employees that you end up with a flight to the exit door. The problem deepens if yours is a public company carrying out layoffs because of an undecided combination that has yet to be announced. If the employee you tell gets wind of this news and acts on the information or passes it on to others who do, you might find yourself in a legal imbroglio(纠葛) because of breaking securities regulations.

It's important to keep in mind that you're unlikely to find a perfect solution for everyone. But you can manage the situation so that potential damage is minimized without having to break confidentiality or lie. The solution may be as simple as telling the employee that he should wait a couple of weeks and come back to talk to you then. If his follow-up question is whether a layoff is likely to come about, then it's fair enough to tell him you can't say one way or the other. The employee still may buy the house. And he may be angry with you. But doing the moral thing is often difficult exactly for this reason. Rather than being able to please everyone, you're trying to find a solution that's fairest to all involved, including yourself.

1.The main idea of this passage is ________.

[ ]

A.how to be a good manager

B.how to avoid getting into trouble

C.how to deal with an employee when he is on the list to be cut

D.how to keep the information secret for two weeks

2.What can you do if you are asked for advice by an employee?

[ ]

A.Try to Find a perfect solution for everyone.

B.Tell him the situation.

C.Try to please him by giving him some money.

D.Tell him to wait a couple of weeks and come back to talk to you then, saying nothing more about the layoff.

Back in the old days, when I was a child, we sat around the family round table at dinner time and exchanged our daily experiences. It wasn't organized, but everyone was recognized and all the news that had to be told was told by each family member.

We listened to each other and the interest was not put on; it was real. Our family was a unit and we supported each other, cared for each other, and liked each other, and-we were even willing to admit-we loved each other.

Today, the family round table has moved to the local fast-food franchise(特权) and talk is not easy, much less encouraged.

The working parent is far too beaten down each day to spend evening relaxation time listening to the sandbox experience of an eager four-year-old child.

So family conversation is no longer in existence and parental questions such as “What have you been doing, Bobby?” have been replaced by “I'm busy; go watch television.

  And watch TV they do.

But it's usually not children's television that children watch. Saturday morning, the children's hour, amounts to only about 8 percent of their weekly viewing.

But wait! Where are they to be found? Watching adult television, of course, from the Match Game in the morning, to the afternoon at General Hospital, from the muggings(哑剧) and battles on the evening news right through the family hour and past into Starsky and Hutch. That's where you find our kids, over five million of them, at 10 p.m., not fewer than a million until after midnight! All of this is done with parental permission.

Television, used well, can provide enriching experiences for our young people, but we must use it with some judgment. When the carpet is clean, we turn off the vacuum(真空) cleaner. When the dishes are clean, the dishwasher turns itself off.

It is not the same with the television, which is on from the sun in the morning to the moon at night and beyond!

Parents must exercise some control and interest themselves in the cultural influence on the child when a program not intended for that child is viewed. Parents need to intervene(干预). Nonintervention(不干预) may be a popular policy in international affairs, but the results of parental nonintervention will not be welcome at the United Nations or anywhere else.

1.From the first two paragraphs one may infer that the writer's attitude towards “the old days” is ________.

[ ]

A.preferring
B.hating
C.being tired of
D.surprising

2.The working parent is not willing to listen to her(his) four-year-old child talking about his sandbox games because she (he) is ________.

[ ]

A.boring
B.very tired
C.busy
D.angry

3.If we use television with some ________, television can provide our young people with much knowledge.

[ ]

A.instruction
B.judgment of our own
C.background
D.information

4.What is the main idea of the last paragraph?

[ ]

A.Parental nonintervention will have a bad effect on international affairs.

B.Nonintervention may be a good policy in international affairs.

C.Parents must exercise some control and interest themselves in the cultural influence on the children.

D.Parents have rights to intervene.

Many families in the United States have a larger income now than ever before, but people are finding it difficult to make ends meet anyway. Almost everyone is wondering, “What happens to all my money? I never seem to have anything left to put away.”

Why isn't dollar worth as much as it used to be? One dollar is always worth the same amount, that is, 100 cents. But the value of a dollar is how much it can buy. The value of money depends on the cost of living. Economists say that the cost of living is the money that a family must pay for the necessities of life such as food, housing, or rent, clothes and medical expenses. For many years now, the cost of living has increased greatly, so the value of the dollar has decreased. When a dollar has a low value, you cannot buy as many things with it.

No one fully understands why the cost of living keeps increasing, but economists believe that workers and producers can make prices go up. As workers earn more money, they have more money to spend, so they demand more goods. If there is a great demand for certain goods, the prices of these goods go up. At the same time, if there's a shortage of goods, the prices also go up. For example, if everyone wants to buy more and more gas, the price of gas goes up. When companies withhold(抑制) gas from buyers, they can also make the price of gas go up.

Families need to know what happens to their money. They need to make their income meet the cost of living, so many people plan a family budget(预算). A budget is a list of monthly expenses. If your expenses add up to more than your income, you must find ways to save money. Maybe you're spending too much on entertainment. Or if you're spending too much on clothes, you may want to sew your own clothes. Budgeting helps you spend your money wisely as the cost of living increases.

1.What has troubled many families in the United States?

[ ]

A.A not-large-enough income.

B.Nothing is left over to put away.

C.The increasing cost of living.

D.A shortage of certain goods.

2.Why does the cost of living keep increasing?

[ ]

A.There are always shortages of goods.

B.The workers are getting lower and lower pay.

C.The government makes no interference(干预).

D.People demand more and more better goods.

3.Which of the following is true?

[ ]

A.Housewives needn't know anything happening to the market.

B.People are most concerned about the value of money.

C.There seems to be no need for everyone to know about the rising cost of living.

D.The prices will go up if more goods are produced.

4.According to the passage, when people find it hard to make ends meet, they ________.

[ ]

A.find ways to save money

B.do extra work to earn more money

C.try some other means of making money

D.are against the high cost of living

At first Kate, the Romanian girl, could not speak and understand English. Nadia would not reply to anything Kate said. Kate was in charge of showing Nadia around on her first day at Buckminster Grade School. Kate could not figure out why the school had put Nadia in a class where she could not understand what people were saying.

“Why did they do this?” Kate wondered aloud. “I mean, you can't learn if you can't understand the teacher.

Nadia's voice was a whisper. “I understand English. I will learn.” Nadia's English was perfect.

Kate was perplexed. She couldn't understand why Nadia did not like to speak. Then she realized that moving to a new country probably wasn't the easiest thing to do. There were hundreds of unfamiliar and unusual things to learn-all at the same time.

“There're a lot of new things to learn, huh.?” said Kate.

Nadia nodded rapidly. In a quiet voice she relied. “Many things people say, I do not understand. I have been speaking English and Romanian all my life, but I do not know what some children are saying. “Don't worry,” said Kate, “You'll figure everything out in time. You see, that thin black box was a computer. A USB port is a place where you can connect other machines to a computer.”

Nadia and Kate were quiet after that. They took notes while the teacher gave a maths lesson. To Kate's surprise, Nadia put up her hand and offered to answer questions at the blackboard.

Nadia handled every question the teacher gave her. Some of the questions were really difficult, and no one understood what was going on except Nadia and the teacher. When the teacher said that Nadia answered everything correctly, the whole class clapped their hands.

Parts of Africa are covered by a dark cloud. But this is no rain cloud. It is a living cloud made of billions of locusts that are travelling across the continent eating everything in their path.

And now in the battle to stop this disaster, a radio station in Senegal, West Africa, is offering listeners 50 kilograms of rice if they can catch and kill 50 kilograms of locusts, “We think this idea will get more people involved(参与) in the war on the locusts,” said Abdoulaye Ba, from Sud-Fm, a radio station in one of Senegal's worst affected regions.

This is West Africa's biggest locust disaster in 15 years, and it is moving east, causing huge damage to crops. As they move they breed and increase their number and will soon threaten Sudan in the northeast of Africa. Some say it could reach Asia.

Experts say the harmful effect on crops in areas already suffering from food shortage and war could cause many people to go hungry. Governments in the region are not well equipped to fight the pest.

Although leaders of 12 countries have agreed on a plan, it may be inadequate. “We are now treating 6,000 hectares per day with pesticide(杀虫剂), but we need to treat 20,000 hectares per day in order to have any hope of controlling his disaster,” said Mohamed Abdallahi Ould Babah, director of locust control in Mauritania.

Joe Temper should have known better. After all he works for a large auto insurance company. It won't hurt to leave the key in the truck this once, he thought, as he filled his gas tank at a self-service gas station. But moments later, as he was paying the money, he saw the truck being driven away.

In 2001, 1..6 million motor vehicles were stolen in the United States-one every 20 seconds. If present trends continue, experts predict vehicle thefts could be over two million every year by the end of the decade.

Vehicle theft is a common phenomenon, which has a direct effect on over four million people a year. The cost is astonishing.

Many police officials blame professional thieves for the high volume of the thefts. It is a major moneymaker far organized crime(犯罪). Typically, stolen cars are taken to pieces and the parts sold to individuals. But as many as 200000 cars are smuggled out of the country every year. Most go to Latin America, the Middle East and Europe.

Only about 15 percent car thefts result in an arrest, because few police departments specially conduct in depth auto investigations(调查). When thieves are arrested, judges will often sentence them to probation, not immediately put them in prison because the prisons are overcrowded with violent criminals(罪犯).

One exception is a Michigan program that calls for 92 police officers to work full time on the state's 65,000 car theft cases a year. Since 1996, when the effort began, the state's auto theft rate has fallen from second in the nation to ninth.

How can you protect your car? If you live in a high theft area or drive an expensive model, consider a safety system. It may cost anywhere from $ 25 to $ 1 000. Some systems work automatically-simply removing the key disables the fuel pump and the starter. When cars are equipped with such systems, thefts may drop by one third. In some states, you may be able to use a device(仪器设备) that transmits radio signals, allowing stolen cars to be tracked by police.

1.What does the author think Joe Temper should be to blame for?

[ ]

A.He should have equipped his car with a security system.

B.He should not have his car refilled at the gas station.

C.He should not have been so sure of himself.

D.He should have shut down the engine of his car.

2.What is NOT a reason for the increase of car theft as mentioned in the passage?

[ ]

A.Police don't give enough attention to car theft cases.

B.More people park their cars and left the keys inside.

C.Measures and laws against car thieves are not effective enough.

D.Car theft brings car thieves much money.

3.It is obvious that the Michigan program ________.

[ ]

A.has an effect on the whole USA

B.involves(牵涉) much work but groves to be quite effective

C.involves the construction of larger prisons

D.involves the development of a new safety system

4.What type(s) of safety system can help the police find a stolen car back?

[ ]

A.The device that sends out radio signals.

B.The device that disables the fuel pumps.

C.The device that disables the starter.

D.All of the above.

Every country tends to accept its own way of life as being the normal one and to praise or criticize others, as they are similar to or different from it. And unfortunately, our picture of the people and the way of nfe of other countries is often a distorted(扭曲) one.

Here is a great argument in favor of foreign travel and learning foreign languages. It is only by traveling in a country and getting to know its inhabitants and their language that one can find out what a country and its people are really like. And how different the knowledge one gains this way frequently turns out to be from the second-hand information gathered from other sources! How often we find that the foreigners whom we thought to be such different people from ourselves are not very different at all!

Differences between peoples do, of course, exist and, one hopes, will always continue to do so. The world will be a dull place indeed when all the different nationalities behave exactly alike, and some people might say that we are rapidly approaching this state of affairs. With the much greater rapidity and ease of travel, there might seem to be some truth in this at least as far as Europe is concerned. No matter who you are or where you come from, one thing is certain: you are familiar to the mosquito, although you probably wish you weren't. Mosquitoes are everywhere. They can be found all over the world, and they come in more than 2,500 species(种). Somewhere, at some time, you have surely met at least one.

No one loves the mosquito. But unfortunately, the mosquito may decide who she loves. She? Yes, she. Do you know that only the female mosquito bites? Well, it's true. And it's not because she is unfriendly; she needs blood to reproduce.

Do you know how the female mosquito decides whom to bite? She is quite selective, and she chooses her victims(猎物) carefully. First, she uses sensors(感觉器) to find her victim. These sensors are located on her two antennae(触角) and her three pairs of legs. With these sensors, she tests your body moisture, body warmth, and chemical substances in your sweat. If she likes what she finds, she bites. But if you are not attractive, she'll reject you for another one. The next time a mosquito bites you, just remember that you are chosen. You are special.

If the mosquito likes you, she settles onto your, flesh very gently, and she breaks your skin with her long nose tip. Long nose tip? What's that? It's a kind of mouth and it sticks out just below the mosquito's eyes. It contains six sharp instruments called stylets. She thrusts all six stylets into your skin at once, and if she hits a blood pipe, she'll get a full dinner in about a minute. All this usually takes place so quickly and quietly that you may not have doubted anything is happening.

Why does a mosquito bite itch(痒)? The itch is not really from the bite. It's from the saliva(口水) the mosquito mixes with your blood to keep it from being blocked as she sucks it up her long nose tip. By the time the itch begins, she has gone.

And then what happens? Well after her delicious dinner, the mosquito is tired. She just wants to find a place to rest. Heavy with your blood, she picks a spot on a leaf, a wall or a stone to quietly lay her eggs. Just one drop of blood will produce hundreds of eggs.
