There are different ways in which people try to deal with the problem of energy. One way is the greater production of common energy sources (能源), such as coal, oil and gas. The trouble with these sources, however, is that they are not renewable.

Another way is energy conservation (节能), which means using energy more efficiently (有效地). In some very cold countries people build special houses to save energy. They place materials between the inside and the outside of the walls of the house to keep the cold out and the warmth in. The house is heated by the lights, the body heat of the people and the other equipment in it.

Finally, renewable energy sources are used even though they are often expensive to develop. One form of these is geothermal energy. In certain parts of the world the temperature of the earth increases thirty degrees centigrade with each kilometre down. At six kilometres, therefore, it rises to nearly two hundred degrees. To get the heat, water is pumped (压, 抽)down into the rocks and back up to the surface. Heat from the earth is already used in certain countries.

June came and the hay was almost ready for cutting. On Midsummer's Eve, which was a Saturday, Mr Jones went into Willington and got so drunk at the Red Lion that he did not come back till midday on Sunday. The men had milked the cows in the early morning and then had gone out rabbiting, without bowering (操心) to feed the animals. When Mr Jones got back he immediately went to sleep on the living-room sofa with the “News of the World” over his face, so that when evening came, the animals were still not fed.At last, they could stand no longer. One of the cows broke in the door of the storehouse with her horns (角) and all the animals began to help themselves to the grains. It was just then that Mr Jones woke up. The next moment he and his four men were in the storehouse with whips in their hands, whipping in all directions. This was more than the hungry animals could bear. Together, though nothing of the kind had been planned beforehand, they jumped upon their masters. Jones and his men suddenly found themselves being butted (顶撞) and kicked from all sides. The situation was quite out of their control. They had never seen animals act like this before, and this sudden uprising of creatures whom they were used to beating and whipping just as they chose, frightened them. After only a moment or two they gave up trying to defend themselves. A minute later all five of them were in full fright down the road, with the animals running after them joyfully.

Many cities around the world today are heavily polluted.Careless methods of production and lack of consumer demand for environment (环境) friendly products have contributed to the pollution problem. One result is that millions of tons of glass paper, plastic, and metal containers are produced, and these are difficult to get rid of.

However, today, more and more consumers are choosing “green” and demanding that the products they buy should be safe for the environment. Before they buy a product, they ask questions like these: “Will this shampoo damage the environment?”“Can this metal container be reused or can it only be used once?”

A recent study showed that two out of five adults now consider the environmental safety of a product before they buy it. This means that companies must now change the way they make and sell their products to make sure that they are“green”, that is, friendly to the environment.

Only a few years ago, it was impossible to find green products in supermarkets, but now there are hundreds. Some supermarket products carry labels (标签) to show that the product is green. Some companies have made the manufacturing (生产) of clean and safe products their main selling point and emphasize it in their advertising.

The concern for a safer and cleaner environment is making companies rethink how they do business. No longer will the public accept the old attitude of “Buy it, use it, throw it away, and forget it”. The public pressure is on, and gradually business is cleaning up its act.

(1)It becomes clear from the text that driving force(动力) behind green products is ________.

[ ]

A.public caring for the environment

B.companies' desire for bigger sales

C.new ways of doing business

D.rapid growth of supermarkets

(2)What would be the best title for the text?

[ ]

A.Business and Pepple

B.Business Goes Green

C.Shopping Habits Are Changing

D.Supermarkets and Green Products

(3)The underlined word “it” in the fourth paragraph refers to ________.

[ ]

A.a selling point

B.the company name

C.a great demand for health foods

D.the manufacturing of green products

The moon is nearer to us than the sun. It is about 240,000 miles away. The sun is much farther, 93 million miles from us. When we look at the moon, it looks almost as large as the sun. That is because it is much nearer. The sun is really much larger.

The sun is a star. It is a ball of fire; it sends our light. The moon is rock and hard.It isn't hot. It doesn't send out light; it reflects light. This means that the moon doesn't make its own light. The sun sends out its light to the moon. Then the moon sends the sun's light back to the earth.

The moon is very different from the earth. There isn't any air on it. It is both very hot and very cold there. The part in the sunshine is very hot, but the part in the dark can be 200°F(129°C )below zero.

There aren't any trees, grass, or water on the moon. All you can see are rocks and deserts. There are many mountains that are from two to five miles high. There are round holes in the moon called craters. There are at least 30,000 of them on the moon. Some of the craters are half a mile wide, but some are as large as 160 miles wide.

A moon is a satellite, a smaller object in space that goes around a planet. Our moon goes around our earth. It takes it about 28 days to go around the earth once. At the same time, the moon itself also turns. This takes about 28 days too. This is why one side of the moon is always turned away from us. Spaceships went around the moon in the 1960's. They took the first picture of the other side of the moon.

In July 1969, two men from the United States stepped on the moon from a spaceship. They took some machines there to make some tests. They brought back 48 pounds of rocks from the moon.

That first trip to the moon was very important. It was the first time that human beings had walked on a heavenly body other than the earth. It was a beginning. It was

a step to all the other planets and stars.

Sometime today--perhaps several times--Dick Winter will think about the19-year-old who saved his life.

Because of this young man, Winter enjoys things like friendships, colours and laughter every day.

The young man saved Winter's life by signing an organ donor card (器官损献卡).

“I can't say thank you enough,” Winter said yesterday at a news conference making the tenth anniversary of the Multi Organ Transplant program at Toronto General Hospital.

What Winter knows of the 19-year-old who saved his life is only that he died in a car accident and that his family was willing to honour his wishes and donate his organs for transplantation.

His liver (肝脏) went to Winter, who was dying from liver trouble. “Not a day goes by that I don't think of what a painful thing it must have been for them.” Winter said yesterday.

“They are very, very special people.”

Winter, 63, is fitter now than he was 10 years ago, when he got the transplant. He has five medals from the 1995 World Transplant Games in swimming and hopes to collect some next year in Japan.

“At one time, we were probably strange people in the eyes of other people. Now it's expected you should be able to go back and do everything you did before, only better.”

The biggest change for Winter, however, isn't that he has become a competitive athlete. The biggest change is how deeply he appreciates every little thing about his life now.

“I have no time for arguments,” said Winter.

“You change everything. Material things don't mean as much. Friendships mean a lot.”

Also at yesterday's news conference was Dr. Gray Levy, Winter's doctor.

Levy said he has bitter-sweet feelings when he looks at Winter and hears of his athletic exploits.

Levy knows that for every recipient (接受者) like Winter, there are several others who die even though they could be saved because there aren't enough donated organs.

“For every Mr Winter. We have five to 10 people that will never be given the chance that Mr. Winter was given.” Levy said.

Levy said greater public awareness and more resources are needed. He noted that in Spain and the United States, hospitals receive $10,000 per donor to cover the costs of the operating room, doctors, nurses and teams to work with the donor's families.

(1)Which of the following is true about the 19-year-old? ________.

Henry Kissinger may be the most successful Secretary of State (国务卿) to hold that office in modern times. When he was appointed in the late 1960s, there were no American ties with Communist China.Vietnam and Berlin seemed ready to draw the United States into a third world war, and Russia was seen as the “enemy”.

But all this has changed, and Henry Kissinger caused much of the change. In1971, he made his first trip to China, a trip that was the beginning of the present ties between the United States and China. He brought the United States and Russia closer together on major subjects by the policy he called “detente” literally meaning a relaxation. His philosophy was always to talk and to bring together. With these two policies, Kissinger did much to draw attention away from any possible Russian-American friction (摩擦). In 1973 he made his first visit to Egypt. Here he was able to begin U. S. relation with Egypt. He used this contact later to begin the sort of talks the American press called “shuttle diplomacy (穿梭外交)”. For ninety-nine days, he “shuttled” back and forth on flights between Cairo and Jerusalem to work out a step by step withdrawal (撤离) of Israeli troops from the Sinai desert. His wisdom, his careful approach to detail, and his presence made “shuttle diplomacy” work. It was the only successful approach to Mid-East peace in the thirty years since the state of Israel was founded.

Another major work was the Strategies (战略的) Arms Limitation Talk. Though his term in office passed with the treaty unsigned, Kissinger left a draft (草案) of the treaty to which the Russians had already agreed. The SALT treaty spelled out a one-tenth reduction in nuclear arms, a great success by any standard, even if one does not consider all the other conditions and limitations included in the treaty.

Even though he successfully helped bring an end to the Vietnam War, Kissinger's final days in office were affected, as was the entire government's branch in one way or another, by the scandals (丑闻) of the Nixon White House. Kissinger's critics (批评者们) point to his role in placing wiretaps on the phones of reporters and officials and to what they consider his “high-handed” approach to setting foreign policy. But Kissinger, during the last few months of the Nixon presidency, limited the effects of the American domestic (国内的) problems on its foreign policy. He continued talks in the Middle East. He continued close contact with the Soviet Union. History will decide in the final view, as Kissinger (and many presidents) often said, on the value of his service. Whatever they decide, whether his actions are finally to be considered wise of foolish, he had a personal vision that will be difficult to march.

(1)The main idea of the above passage is that ________.

[ ]

A.Kissinger helped smooth away the troubles of Watergate

B.Kissinger has great effect on American foreign policy

C.peace in the Middle-East would have been impossible without Kissinger

[ ]

A.it spelled out a one-tenth reduction in nuclear arms

B.the Russians had already agreed to it

C.it set a standard for nuclear missile (导弹) development

D.it helped stop the third world war

(3)We can conclude from the passage that ________.

[ ]

A.“shuttle diplomacy” greatly affected the SALT treaty

B.Watergate made Kissinger ineffective

C.some of the things that Kissinger began are still being worked out

D.Kissinger was not a humanitarian (人道主义者)

(4)Which of the following words best shows the author's tone in this passage?

[ ]

A.Objective.
B.Indifferent.
C.Jealous.
D.Admiring.

(5)The passage suggests that ________.

[ ]

A.Kissinger was driven by his own idea

B.Kissinger was unsuccessful in bringing about peace in the Middle East

C.Kissinger significantly changed the direction of international relationships

D.Kissinger was more important than the president during the Nixon Times
