“I can't go any farther,”John Smith thought.“I must get a rest before I go on. They'll look for me first up there on the mountain where the plane was shot down. They're sure to find the chute (降落伞) in the end. So they' 11 know I'm not dead. They'll think I'm hiding up there in the trees and so they'll look for me there. So I'll go down to the village as soon as possible. With luck by the evening my aching foot will be good enough to get me to the border.”

Far above him on the mountain side he could hear someone whispering which frightened him a lot after the great silence. Looking up he saw some lights moving across the face of the mountain in the grey light. But there was nobody on the road for the moment, and he dragged himself along to wards the village, still almost invisible in the first light. At last he reached the church. My friend Henry has a most unusual hobby (业余爱好). He likes planting flowers in strange places. When spring comes round, you can always found that the dirty sides of canals, land covered with rubbish and railway banks suddenly become full of flowers. In his spare time, with his pockets full of seeds, Henry goes around on his bike. He has a long pipe with him to blow seeds into places which are hard to reach. When flowers die away, he goes round again to collect their seeds. In this way, he always has a big supply.

Many people make fun of Henry, but he never lets him-self get upset! Recently I was having tea with him and he told me that once he was planting seeds in a large piece of waste land when the owner came along and sent him away. Henry returned some days later when there was no one around. You can imagine how surprised the owner was when, one day, he saw a large letter“H”in flowers which went right across this piece of land.

“We don' t have rush hours any more,”said Charles M. McLean, who runs the nation's busiest road.“We have rush periods, and they keep getting longer and longer.”McLean was describing Chicago's 235 miles of expressway, but the same might be said about almost any of the expressways that have become an important part of American city life--and about the heavy traffic that often blocks (阻塞) them.

In Chicago, a computerized system has been developed that controls traffic on the city's seven expressways. Now one man--a controller--can follow the movement of Chicago's traffic by looking at a set of lights.

The system uses electronic sensors (传感器) that are built into each expressway, half a mile apart several times a second, the computer receives information from each sensor and translates it into green, yellow, or red lights on a map in the control room. A green light means traffic is moving forty-five miles an hour, yellow means thirty to forty-five miles an hour, and red means heavy traffic--cars standing still or moving less than thirty miles an hour.

“See that red light near Austin Avenue?”The controller asked a visitor ,“That' s a repair truck fixing the road, and the traffic has to go around it.”

At the Roosevelt Road entrance to the expressway, the light kept changing from green to red and back to green again.“A lot of trucks get on the expressway there,”the controller explained.“They can' t speed up as fast as cars.”

The sensors show immediately where an accident or a stopped car is blocking traffic, and a truck is sent by radio to clear the road. The system has lowered the number of accidents by 18 percent. There are now 1.4 deaths on Chicago' s expressways for each one hundred million miles traveled, while in other parts of the country there are 2.6.

Traffic experts say that the Chicago system is the“coming thing”. Systems like Chicago's are already in use on some expressways in Los Angeles and Houston.“Chicago has taken the lead,”says New York city' s traffic director, and he adds,“We are far behind...”

During the American War of Independence, women played an active part in fighting in three ways. Firstly, some women worked as nurses in the field hospitals, taking care of wounded soldiers; some worked as cooks in the army; many women acted as water carriers. When necessary, all these women, who had many chances to see how the men fired guns, could take the place of the wounded men. The second way that women served in the Army was to fight side by side with their men comrades. Although women were not supposed to fight as soldiers in battles, when the Army was badly short of soldiers and when women were really good soldiers, who would be against women fighting in battles? Thirdly, from city streets to country villages, many able women were in charge of the work to supply food, clothing and medicine for the Army, and when the situation was dangerous, they called on all the women to take up anus to defend their own homes.

All food chains begin with the sun, and all food chains become broken up if one of the links disappears. All life depends on energy from sunlight. Only plants can use this energy directly. Their leaves are little factories that use sunlight to make food from water and things in the soil and air. Plants in turn feed all other living things. Animals can only use the sun's energy after it has been changed into food by plants. Some animals feed directly on plants, other eats smaller animals. Meat-eating animals are only eating plants indirectly.

What about human being? We are members of many food chains. We eat vegetables and fruit. We also eat meat and drink milk. This means the sun' s energy passes through plant to animal before it reaches us. Nature is a great thing. Any food chain always produces enough for each of its members if it is left alone. When there isn't enough food or any link in the chain, some of members die off. So the balance is always kept.

The writers of murder stories go to a great deal of trouble to keep up guessing right up to the end. In actual fact, people often behave more strangely in real life than they do in stories.

The following advertisement once appeared in a local newspaper:“An opportunity to earn $ 250 in a few minutes. A man... willing to take chances, wanted for an out- of-the-ordinary job which can be performed only once.” A reader found this offer very nice and write to the advertiser. But being a bit suspicious (怀疑), he gave a false name. Soon afterwards, he received a reply. Enclosed in the envelope was a typed note instructing him to ring a certain number if he was still interested. He did so and learned on the telephone that the advertiser wanted him “to gel rid of somebody” and would discuss it more fully with him the next day. But the man told the police and from then on acted under their instructions.

The police saw the two men meet and watched them as they drove away together. In the car the advertiser came to the point at once; he told the man he wanted him to shoot his wife. The reason he gave was that he was suffering from a serious disease and wanted to live in a warmer country, but his wife objected to this. Giving the man some money, the advertiser told him to buy a gun and warned him to be careful of the dog, though it would not bite, it might attract attention. He also gave him a photograph of his wife so that he would be able to recognize her.

After that, the advertiser suggested that the man should“do the job”the next morning. At the same time he would prepare his wife by telling her that a young man was going to call. After the murder they would meet again outside a railway station and the money would be paid as arranged. The second meeting never took place, for the advertiser was arrested shortly afterwards and charged with attempting to persuade someone to murder his wife.

Today remarkable escapes are not unusual. In cinemas and on TV we watch secret agents (特工) using all kinds of modern equipment, escape from impossible situations. If we believe what we read in the newspapers, the world of cinema and TV is not so far from the real world. Yet wonderful and brave as modern agents are, none have succeeded in bettering the remarkable feats of Erich Weiss, known to the world as the Great Houdini.

Erich Weiss was born in the U. S. A. in 1874. When he was seven years old he saw his first circus (马戏表演). He wanted to be a magician and conjurer and he began practising every day. He joined an athletic club because he believed that physical fitness was important. When he was eleven he got a job as a locksmith and it was not long before he was able to pick any lock. He was even able lo open handcuffs. In 1893 Erich appeared at the Chicago World Fair as Harry Houdini, Handcuffed King and Escape Artist. This was the start of a remarkable career, which lasted thirty-four years. In this time Houdini and his wife, perhaps the only person who knew the secret of his tricks, traveled all over the world. Houdini performed before millions of people including kings, queens, dukes and millionaires.

Houdini was able to make elephants disappear but his special trick was escaping. Once he was handcuffed and put into a packing case. He was them tied with rope, weighed, and thrown into the sea. It took Houdini less than five minutes to come to the surface. He once challenged the police of fourteen countries to keep him handcuffed and locked up. In Russia he was handcuffed and locked in a steel prison van. The door was locked and chained. There was only a well barred window five inches square. The Russians thought it was impossible to escape from this. Houdini had no modern equipment but it took only an hour. There was nothing to show how he did it. Nobody knows how he performed his remarkable tricks but we do know he practised every day of his life. He was always in very good physical condition. His toes could do the work of fingers. He used to tie string in complicated (复杂的) knots (结) and then undo the knots with his toes without looking! He also learned to stay underwater for six minutes and had an ice cold bath every morning so he could work in winter. There have been many excape artists since Houdini but none have been quite so clever.
