Some people seem to have a knack (诀窍) for learning languages. They can pick up new vocabulary, master roles of grammar, and learn to write in the new language more quickly than others. They do not seem to be any cleverer than others,so what makes language learning so much easier for them? Perhaps if we take a close look at these successful language learners,we may discover a few of the techniques which make language learning easier for them.

First of all, successful language learners are independent learners. They do not depend on the book or the teacher;they discover their own way to learn the language. Instead of waiting for the teacher to explain, they try to find the patterns and the rules for themselves. They are good guessers who look for clues (线索) and form their own conclusions. When they guess wrong, they guess again. They try to learn form their mistakes. Successful language learning is active learning. Therefore, successful learners do not wait for a chance to use the language;they look for such a chance. They find people who speak the language and they ask these people to correct them when they make a mistake. They will try anything to communicate. They are not afraid to repeat what they hear or to say strange things;they are willing to make mistakes and try again. When communication is difficult, they can accept information that is inexact or incomplete. It is more important for them to learn to think in the language than to know the meaning of every word.

Finally successful language learners are learners with a purpose. They want to learn the language because they are interested in the language and the people who speak it. It is necessary for them to learn the language in order to communicate with these people and to learn from them. They find it easy to practise using the language regularly because they want to learn with it.

What kind of language learner are you? If you are a successful language learner, you have probably been learning independently, actively, and purposefully. On the other hand,if your language learning has been less than successful, you might do well to try some of the techniques discussed above.

Our eating habits are very important for good health and a strong body. There are times when most of us would rather eat sweets and ice-cream than meat and rice. Sweets and ice-cream are not bad for the stomach if we eat them at the end of a meal. If we eat them before a meal, they may take away our appetite (胃口). It's important for us to eat our meals at the same time each day. When we feel hungry, it's said that our body needs food. When we feel angry or excited we may not want to eat. Along time ago, in England, some judges used to decide whether a man was telling the truth by giving him some dry bread. If the man could not swallow (吞) the bread, it was a sign that he wasn't telling the truth. He was telling lies. Although this seems very strange and foolish, it is in deed an excellent way of finding out the truth. A man who is worrying about something has difficulty in swallowing anything dry. Because he is worrying, he loses his appetite and does not want to eat.

Before he turned to the historical novel,Walter Scott wrote poems, most of which were based on love and fighting. But soon he discovered that he could not write poems as good as Byron's,and so he turned away from it;but as a historical novelist,he seemed to be the best of his time. He read the older novelists, and himself began to write his first novel Waverley in 1805. It appeared in 1814 and for the next eighteen years Scott wrote novel after novel. In 1826 he lost all his money through the business failure of his publisher and printer. He owed $100,000,but refused the money with which his friends offered to help him. He sat down to pay the huge debt by writing, but died before he could do so. However, his books brought in enough money after his death to pay the last pound.

The modern world is very different from Scott's world. It does not admire glory(光荣) in battle as much as the men of Scott's day, partly because there are so many other dangerous events to remember. Space travel is more exciting to us than fighting with swords. These facts have made Scott's novels interest fewer people;yet we must admire his power of description (描写) His characters, especially the unusual ones, are well drawn. He left so much that few people can read all of it.

Proverbs (谚语) are 匀quite common in spoken English. We do not normally use them in a composition or letter. But more often than not it is helpful if you know what common proverbs mean.

  Here are a few examples:

1)“Once bitten, twice shy.” If a dog bites me,I shall be twice as careful in future when I see it again. This proverb is also used to apply to (适用) many things. If you have been cheated at a shop, you will not go to the same shop again.

2)“A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.” if I am a hunter, trying to catch birds,it is better to catch one bird than to see two birds in a bush which I can't catch. Thus this means that what you have already got is better than the chance of being able to get something bigger in future.

3)“Too many cooks spoil the broth (soup).” When too many people do something, they get in each other's way.

4)“To pour oil on troubled water”is to try to calm things down. Oil is lighter than water. If a ship is in trouble at sea, another ship may come to help it. The second ship can send small boats to rescue people. However,it may first pour oil on the sea to make the sea less rough.

5)“Don't be a dog in a manger (槽)” means “Don't be selfish”. In a stable (马厩),the manger is the place where the horse's food is put. Sometimes a dog will sleep in the manger and bark when a horse comes to get its food. The dog does not want to eat the hay in the manger but it will not let the horse eat it.

6)“He is sitting on the fence” means that somebody will not say whether he is in favor of a plan or against it. He is sitting on a fence (篱笆) between two opposing sides, perhaps waiting to see which side will win.

7)“He who pays the piper calls the tune. ” A piper is a musician. The man who employs or pays a musician can say what tunes the man will play. Thus this means that if a man provides the money for a plan,he can say how it will be carried out.

8)“You can't get blood out of a stone” means that you cannot get something from a person who has not got any of the things you want. For example, you cannot get a million dollars from a poor man.

(1)Peter had a bicycle which was much too small for him but he did not want to let his younger brother ride it. His mother was angry and said to him,“_______”

C.being a dog in a manger

D.not pouring oil on water

[ ]

A.he was sitting on the fence

B.once bitten,twice shy

C.he who pays the piper calls the tune

D.a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush

(4)Mrs Chen wanted to buy a new dress. Her husband suggested that she buy it from a shop near their home. Mrs. Chen disagreed because she had been cheated by that shop. Then she said,“I won't go there again because________.”

[ ]

A.a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush

B.I am sitting on the fence

C.once bitten,twice shy

D.too many cooks spoil the soup

(5)Mr. Brown had quite a good job in Hong Kong but he thought if he went to Singapore he might get a much better job with more money and a large house. His wife did not want him to leave his job in Hong Kong and she reminded him that________.

[ ]

A.he who plays the piper calls the tune

1970 was World Conservation (保护) Year. The United Nations wanted everyone to know the world is in danger. They hoped that governments would act quickly in order to conserve the nature. Here is one example of the problem. At one time there were 1300 different plants, trees and flowers in Holland but now only 866 remain. The others have been destroyed by modem man and his technology. The real problem with pollution is people -- the way people think about their environment. We're all unwilling to accept the fact that our natural resources are fixed,in fact, since the earth was created. We want to go on using virgin (原始的) materials. We aren't educated to reusing resources,or even placing a value on “waste” products. We're a crisis (危机) society. Now,we are fearful of losing the use of our water and air by pollution. Phone books have white, blue and yellow pages. The white pages list people with phones by last name. The blue pages contain numbers of city services, government services and public schools. Business and professional services are listed in a special directory-the Yellow pages.

The area covered by one area code may be small or large. For example,New York City has one code area, but so does the whole state of Oregon. There is an area code of the map of the US and Canada in the front of the white pages.

Pay phones have numbers in the US. This means you can call a friend at a phone booth (电话亭). Or if you are making a long distance call and run out of money, give the number on your phone to the person you're talking to. Then hang up the receiver and they can call you back.

If you make a long distance call and get a wrong number, call the operator and explain what happened. This means that you can make the call again to the right number without having to pay more money;or you can have the phone company mail you a credit coupon that has the same value as the phone call.
