Fair Way

The Westborough High School golf team had taken the official photos with the state prize. The other teams, disappointed, were on the bus heading home. And then Westborough instructor Greg Rota noticed something wrong on one of the score cards. A 9 had been recorded as a 7. They were not the state prize winner; Woburn High had won. “No one would have known,” said Woburn's instructor, Bob Doran. For Rota, it wasn't a difficult decision: “The prize wasn't ours to take.”

Her “Change for Change” effort has collected $ 40 000 for charities (慈善机构), which were decided upon by students.

Do you want to live another 100 years or more? Some experts say that scientific advances will one day enable humans to last tens of years beyond what is now seen as the natural limit of the human life span.

“I think we are knocking at the door of immortality (永生).” said Miehael Zey, a Mentclair State University business professor and author of two books on the future. “I think by 2075 we will see it and that’s a conservative estimate(保守的估计).”

At the conference in San Francisco, Donald Louria, a professor at New Jersey Medical School in Newark said advances in using genes as well as nanotechnology (纳米技术) make it likely that humans will live in the future beyond what has been possible in the past. “There is a great push so that people can live from 120 to 180 years,” he said“Some have suggested that there is no limit and that people could live to200 or 300 or 500 years.”

However, many scientists who specialize in ageing are doubtful about it and say the human body is just not designed to last about 120 years. Even with healthier lifestyle and less disease, they say failure of the brain and organs will finally lead all humans to death.

Scientists also differ on what kind of life the super aged might live.  “It remains to be seen if you pass 120, you know, could you be healthy enough to have good quality of life?” said Leonard Poon, director of the University of Georgia Gerontology Centre. “At present people who could get to that point are not in good health at all.”

Athey believe that there is no limit of living

Bthey are sure to find the truth about long living

    2. Donald Louria’s attitude toward long living is that

Apeople can live from 120 to 180

Bit is still doubtful how long humans can live

Cthe human body is designed to last past about 120 years

Dit is possible for humans to live longer in the future

    3. The underlined “it” (Paragraph 4) refers to _____.

Aa great push

Bthe idea of living beyond the present life span

Cthe idea of living from 200 to 300 years

Dthe conservative estimate

    4. What would be the best title for this text?

ALiving Longer or Not

Who is there among us who hasn’t dreamed of having his or her own small (maybe, several years later, even big) business, and having wonderful freedom, both from a boss and from the time clock: the freedom to make up our own rules for our work, and our own plans-arranging our own hours of work? That way work would be both painless and fun. Or, so we imagine.

Well, in fact it isn’t quite as simple as that. Yes, it is true that being the boss has its satisfactions and that you can arrange your working hours freely if you own your own small business. But in those early years of starting your own business, you shouldn’t think of a free day, not to mention flying off for a month’s vacation. It is not unusual for new business owners to work seventy or eighty hours a week, and if there is a day off, that day might need to be devoted to accounting(算账).

But this negative picture doesn’t destroy the beautiful hopes. The possibility of getting something wonderful in return—both material and mental—continues to drive that large number of people who start up small businesses each year in the United States.

    1. From the first paragraph, we know that everybody hopes _______.

Ato rule others

Bto be his or her own boss

Cto get a time clock

Dto be free from work

    2. Most new business owners have to _____.

Awork more than 10 hours a day

Bdevote himself to accounting

Cfly to some places in the world

Dhave a day off in a week

    3. The expression “negative picture” most probably means “_______”.

    4. The beautiful hopes will never be destroyed because _______.

Apeople love beautiful things by nature

When a 10-year-old boy gets a first class degree in mathematics or an 8-year-old plays chess like a future grand master, they are considered as geniuses. Where does the quality of genius come from? Is it all in the genes (基因) or can any child be turned into a genius? And if parents do have a child who might become a genius in the future, what should they do? In this 30-minute film, Barry Johnson, the professor at School of Medicine, New York University will help you discover the answer.

Before any period of exercise it is well worth spending two or three minutes warming up with a series of simple stretching exercises. This not only helps your joints (关节) to move easily but also prepares all your muscle groups for more energetic activity. It is rather like a cat stretching itself before it springs into action. Here are four movements to do in an easy and unhurried way, gently stretching each action without forcing it. Repeat each movement ten times, breathing normally throughout.

    I. Standing with your feet apart, pushes both arms out straight in front of you, fingertips touching.  Raise them above your head, then down to the sides pushing each arm backwards at the same time.

Ⅱ. Standing with your feet apart, and hands on hips (臀部). Tip your head back and look straight up to the ceiling. Roll your head round slowly to face the right, then the floor, then the left, and finally up at the ceiling again. Repeat in the other direction.

Ⅲ.Standing with your feet apart and hands on your sides, lean first to the right and then to the left, sliding the hand down the side of the leg.

Ⅳ.  Standing feet apart and arms out straight in front, with your eyes fixed on your right hands, as far as it will go. Return it to the front and repeat with the left arm.

1. Why should you do these exercises?

ATo strengthen muscles.

BTo stretch joints.

CTo prepare for physical activity.

DTo develop control of movement.

2. How should these exercises be carried out?

I was in a strange city and I didn’t know the city at all, and what is more, I could not speak a word of the language. After having spent my first day in the town-centre, I decided to lose my way on my second day, since I believed that this was the nearest way of getting to know the strange city.

I got on the first bus that passed, rode on it for several stops, then got off it and walked or on. The first two hours passed pleasantly enough. Then I decided to turn back to my hotel for lunch. After walking about for some time, I decided I had better ask the way. The trouble was that the only word I knew of the language was the name of the street in which I lived and even that I pronounced badly.

I stopped to ask a friendly-looking newspaper-seller. He smiled and handed me a paper. I shook my head and repeated the name of street and he put the paper into my hands. I had to give him some money and went on my way. The next person I asked was a policeman. The policeman listened to me carefully, smiled and gently took me by the arm. there was a strange look in his eyes as he pointed left and right and left again. I nodded politely and began walking in the direction he pointed.
