Like many of my generation.I have a weakness for hero worship. At some point.however,we all begin to question our heroes and our need for them. This lead us to ask:What is a hero?
Despite immense differences in cultures, heroes around the world generally share a number of characteristics that instruct and inspire people.
A hero does something worth talking about.A hero has a story of adventure to tell and a community who will listen. But a hero goes beyond mere fame.
Heroes serve powers or principles larger than themselves.Like high-voltage transformers, heroes take the energy of higher powers and step it down so that it can be used by ordinary people.
The hero lives a life worthy of imitation. Those who imitate a genuine hero experience life with new depth.enthusiasm, and meaning.A sure test for would-be heroes is what or whom do they serve? What are they willing to live and die for?If the answer or evidence suggests they serve only their own fame.
they may be famous persons but not heroes.Madonna and Michael Jackson are famous, but who would claim that their fans find life more abundant?
Heroes are catalysts(催化剂)for change. They have a vision from the mountaintop. They have the skill and the charm to move the masses. They create new possibilites.Without Gandhi,India might still be part of the British Empire.Without Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King,Jr.we might still have segregated(隔离的)buses, restaurants, and parks. It may be possible for large scale change to occur without leaders with magnetic personalities, but the pace of change would be slow.the vision uncertain, and the committee meetings endless.

Why do men die earlier than women? The latest research makes it known that the reason could be that men's hearts go into rapid decline when they reach middle age.
The largest study of the effects of ageing on the heart has found that women's longevity may he linked to the fact that their hearts do not lose their pumping power with age.
“We have found that the power of the male heart falls by 20~25 percent between 18 and 70 years of age,”said the head of the study,David Goldspink of Liverpool John Moores University in the UK.
“Within the heart there are millions of cells that enable it to beat.Between the age of 20 and 70,one-third of those cells die and are not replaced in men,”said Goldspink.“This is part of the ageing process.”
What surprises scientists is that the female heart sees very little loss of these cells.A healthy 70-year-old woman's heart could perform almost as well as a 20-year-old one's.
“This gender difference might just explain why women live longer than men,”said Goldspink.
They studied more than 250 healthy men and women between the ages of 18 and 80,focusing on healthy persons to remove the confusing influence of disease.
The team has yet to find why ageing takes a greater loss on the male heart, said Goldspink.
The good news is that men can improve the health of their heart with regular exercise.Goldspink stressed that women also need regular exercise to prevent their leg muscles becoming smaller and weaker as they age.

Shanghai— Shanghai officials are welcoming a new national water law that they say will help them protect the upperreaches of the Huangpu River and other water ways in Shanghai.
The new law, which came into effect yesterday, updates a law enacted in 1988 that focused on supplying water to needy areas, but didn't pay a great deal of attention to environmental protection.
The previous law,for example, gave local authorities power over waterways in these areas, but didn't pay attention to the sources of those rivers and lakes. So,Shanghai was responsible for cleaning and protecting the lower reaches of the Chang Jiang River but had no say in how the river's upper reaches, which feed into Shanghai, are maintained.
The new law will make it easier to control the amount of waste that ends up in local rivers and reduce inefficient use of waterways, said Zhang Jia-yi,director of the Shanghai Water Affairs Bureau,on the bureau's website commenting on law yesterday.
Zhang said the new law focuses on the efficient use of water sources and emphasizes the harmonious(和谐)development of China's population, its economy and environment.
Zhang also emphasizes the city will crack down on companies and individuals(个人)that pollute the city's water sources. The bureau set up a special force to investigate(调查)water pollution in March.

Learning another language isn't easy, but most people can learn a second language well if they're willing to put in the necessary time. Here are some practical suggestions for studying effectively, overcoming anxiety, and learning the grammar and skills necessary for success in foreign language classes.
Study every day
Language learning is cumulative:you cannot put it off until the weekend.Study one or two hours for every class hour if you want a good mark.
Distribute(分配)your study time in 15 to 30 minutes period throughout the day
Study a different task each time:vocabulary, now, grammar next, etc.Get an overview during the first half hour:spend 10 minutes reviewing dialog,10 minutes learning new vocabulary,10 minutes learning new grammar…So you'll at least have looked at it all.About 80% of your study time should be spend on recitation(背诵)or practice.
Attend and participate(参与)in every class— even if you aren't well prepared
Class time is your best opportunity to practice.Learn the grammar and vocabulary outside of class in order to make full use of the class time.Spend a few minutes “warming up”be fore each class by speaking or reading the language.
Make yourself comfortable in the classroom
Get to know your classmates,so you'll feel you're among friends.Visit your teacher during office hours to get acquainted(熟悉的):explain your goals and fears about the course to your teacher.
Learn grammar if you don't already know it.
Grammar is the skeleton(骨架)and the basic structure of a language, and you must learn it.
Practice for tests by doing what you'll have to do on the test.
If the test will require you to write, then study by writing— including spelling and accents. If you're asked to listen, practice lstening.Ask for practice questions and make up your own test questions.Try to invent changes on patterns and forms.Over learning is also required in tests preparation:study beyond the points of recognition to mastery.
Develop a good attitude.
Have a clear personal reason for taking the class.Set personal goals for what you want to learn, leave perfectionism at the door;give yourself permission to make mistakes and learn from them.

The days of elderly women doing nothing but cooking huge meals on holidays are gone.Enter the Red Hat Soeiety— a group holding the belief that old ladies should have fun.
“My grandmothers didn't do anything but keep house and serve everybody. They were programmed to do that,”said Emily Cornette, head of a chapter of the 7-year-old Red Hat Society.
While men have long spent their time fishing and playing golf, women have sometimes seemed to become unnoticed as they age.But the generation now turning 50 is the baby boomers(生育高峰出生的人),and the same people who refused their parents' way of being young are now trying a new way of growing old.
If you take into consideration feminism(女权主义),a bitof spare money, and better health for most elderly, the RedHat Society looks almost inevitable(必然的).In this society, women over 50 wear red hats and purple(紫色的)clothes, while the women under 50 wear pink hats and light purple clothing.
“The organization took the idea from a poem by Jenny Joseph that begins:“When I am an old woman,I shall wear purple/with a red hat which doesn't go,”said Ellen Cooper, who founded the Red Hat Society in 1998.When the ladies started to wear the red hats, they attracted lots of attention.
“The point of this is that we need a rest from always doing something for someone else,”Cooper said.“Women feel so ashamed and sorry when they do something for themselves.”This is why chapters are discouraged from raising money or doing anything useful.“We're a ladies' play group. It couldn't be more simple,”added Cooper's assistant Joe Heywood.

Before a new type of airplane goes into service, every part of it is tested again and again. But there are two tests that are more important than all the others.
The first is called the “tank test”.A modem airplane must fly very high in the sky.Air must be pumped into the plane so that the passengers can breathe. The metal structure(结构)of the plane has to be very strong for this reason. When the plane is filled with air,the air presses against the skin of the plane inside. The pressure(压力)on a small window is like a huge foot that is trying to get out.If a small part of the plane were to fail, the plane would explode in the sky.To test the structure of the plane, the plane is lowered into a huge tank or container of water. Then it is filled with air.whne pressure inside the plane is greater than it ever will be when it is high up in the air. Finally, there is an explosion. This does not cause so much damage inside the water tank as it would anywhere else.Engineers can discover which part of the plane has broken. Then that part is made stronger.
The most dangerous test happens when the new plane is going through test flights in the air.The test pilot must find out exactly what happens when the engines(发动机)are all shut off at once. The plane begins to fall like a stone. It is the pilot's iob to find out how he can get control of the plane again. These two tests are examples of how planes are made safe before they ever carry passengers.

When someone has deeply hurt you,it can be extremely difficult to let go of your anger. But forgiveness is possible— and it can be surprisingly helpful to your physical and mental health.Indeed, research has shown that people who forgive report more energy, better appetite(胃口)and better sleep patterns.“People who forgive show less anger and more hopefulness,”says Dr.Frederic Luskin, who wrote the book Forgive for Good.“So it can help save on the wear and tear on our system and allow people to feel more energetic.”
