The experiment needs fifty people divided into two groups of the same size. Group A is to take part in a 7-week exercise, while Group B is not allowed to do any exercise during those seven weeks. On the day before the experiment began, all fifty men took part in a step-test. They were told to step up and down on a 16-inch-long bench at 30 steps a minute for five minutes. After the test each man’s heart-beating was taken and recorded. Then during the seven weeks men in Group A rode a sort of bike-like exercise machine for 15 minutes a day. During the first day ride they were asked to ride very slowly. For the next three days, they were permitted to ride a bit more quickly. And the speed of riding was increased every few days until the end of the experiment, when both Group A and Group B were given the step-test again and the heart-beating was taken again, too. Heart-beating of Group A members was to have dropped to an average of 30 heart beats per minute while that of Group B members remained the same or almost unchanged.

“Excuse me, what was that you whistled? ” Even a Spanish-speaking visitor to Gomera may sometimes asked such a question like that. The island people there are supposed to have two languages, which is no doubt a surprise to visitors to the Canary Islands, though they seldom go to this place because of the difficult landing from the sea. Before his first crossing of the Atlantic Ocean, Columbus had been to the island buying fruit and cattle and other animals for the voyage. Perhaps the story that he fell in love with one of the women of Gomera is true.

When and how and why did people there learn to whistle what they wanted to say? It is said that before the Spanish people came to live and whistle in the island, Norman seamen had been there. And long before 1402 the Guanches of a certain kingdom were said to be the first people there. Once their king got angry with them and cut out the tongues of every man, woman and child. That was why they had to learn to speak without tongues. Nobody can believe such a story. However, other reasons may be believable. It is the deep valleys and high mountains there that forced people to whistle so as to hear and shout to one another from either hill side two miles or even 4 miles away. And the record is 7 miles. The people who live on the island usually have good teeth, and this helps them to whistle well. They must also have good ears so that they can hear whistles.

1. Gomera is _____.

A. one of the Canary Islands B. a part of Spain

C. in Teherife. D. in San Sebastian

2. The two languages spoken in Gomera are ____ .

A. Spanish and English B. Whistle-language and Norman language

C. Whistle-language and Spanish D. Whistle-language and Guanches’ language

3. Why did Columbus go to the Canary Islands?

A. He was looking for the New Continent there.

B. He wanted to get fresh food for his ship

C. He wanted to marry a woman in Gomera

D. One can not find the answer to this in the passage

4. Which of the four choices is true ?

A. Every whistler can be heard four miles away.

B. Some good whistlers can be heard four miles away.

C. Some good whistlers can be heard seven miles away.

D. All the good whistlers can be heard from seven miles away.

5. Why do the people of Gomera usually have good teeth?

A. Because they use them for the whistle-language.

B. Because they eat fruit and fish.

C. Because they can get a doctor from San Sebastian.

D. One cannot find the answer to this in the passage.

A higher reading speed, with no loss of understanding, will help you in many subjects, especially English. It is generally helpful in any language learning. Of course you will not read every book at the same speed. For example, you would expect to read a newspaper more rapidly than a physics textbook, but you can raise your average reading speed over the whole material you wish to cover so that the percentage gain, a certain % of knowledge, will be the same whatever kind of reading you are busy with. No other passages are more suitable for an average reader than an about-500-word one. A reader, neither too slow nor too quick, will find a piece of general interest does not require too much special knowledge. That sort of materials are to be found in textbooks, newspapers or light novels. Read them with understanding at 400 words per minute and you might skim through a newspaper at perhaps 650-700 while with a difficult textbook you might drop to 200 or 250.

1. A higher reading speed will help in other subjects as well as English _____.

A. if there is no loss of understanding

B. only if we memorize well

C. but not in any other language

D. though it is not generally accepted as the best way

2. You would expect to read a book about physics_____.

A. as fast as you read a newspaper

B. more quickly than you read a newspaper

C. more slowly than you read a newspaper

D. only very rarely

3. You can expect to read an article without special knowledge ________ .

A. more quickly than you read a maths or medicine textbook

B. more quickly than you read a newspaper

C. more slowly than you read your chemistry textbook

D. faster than any other kind of materials

4. “ Average reading speed” means“ ____ reading speed.”

A. low B. high C. too high or too low D. Neither too high nor too low

5. To read a book of general interest needs ____ special knowledge.

A. no B. little C. only a little D. a lot of

Voices and fingers usually prevent us from reading fast. Young children and even old people learning to read move their fingers along the line of the piece being read, pointing to each word, sometimes even each letter one after another, and saying them to themselves in a low voice. Sometimes the reader makes no sound at all, but keeps moving the inside part of his mouth to pronounce silently. However, no matter how the reader moves his mouth while reading, seen or unseen, visible or invisible, it will be impossible for him to reach a speed of more than about 280 w.p.m.

Reading must be done by seeing instead of with any sort of sound-producing. The reader must be able to read more than one word at a time. When looking straight or directly at only one word in a line of reading, one can clearly see at least two other words on both sides in the same line. In other words, the reader can read three words at one glance. Thus looking straight at one word one can at least take in a whole phrase or even a complete short sentence on one line. Very often less than three eye movements will cover a whole line.

1. Pointing to the lines of a reading piece _____ reading.

A. slows down B. speeds up C. improves D. helps

2. ____a slow way of reading.

A. Reading aloud is B. Moving fingers along the lines is

C. Neither A nor B is D. Both A and B are

3. Taking in _____ at a glance is required in order to read fast.

A. two words B. two phrases C. three words D. three phrases

4. Reading at a speed of about ____ words a minute is still regarded as slow.

A 255B.285 C. 355D. 385

5. Fast reading at an average speed probably requires _____ eye movements for a whole line.

A . oneB. two C. three D. four

When a Japanese friend of mine first visited Britain and first saw a British map of the world, he was very surprised by what he found. At first, the picture seemed familiar(熟悉): in the middle of the map, there were two or three small but long red islands lying between an ocean and a continent. But something was wrong; land mass and ocean had changed places. It wasn't Japan he was looking at, it was the British Isles. Japan was out on the edge somewhere.

Until that moment all the maps he had known had set Japan in the middle of the picture and had colored it red; yet when he got to Britain, he found that the country in the middle of the map was Britain and that it, too, was painted red.

What my friend had found was a displacement(脱离原位)of his country, and, therefore, of himself as well. That is to say, his country was no longer in its familiar place and he no longer knew where he stood; he was disoriented.

Our sense of ourselves and our place in the world may not, as my friend's experience suggests, come from anything real or actual. for no country is in the middle of the globe, except as a picture in the mind. A map is only a model in which we may set ourselves, it just helps us to feel that we know where we are.

Finland is perhaps the most beautiful and mysterious(神秘的)of the countries of northern Europe. Two-thirds of its surface is covered with thick forests and among them lies lakes, connected with rivers and canals. The northern part of this country is inside the Arctic Circle, where almost no trees can grow because of its cold weather and the people use their deer for transport, clothing and food.

The Finnish history began in the Middle Ages. In about 1155, Finland was conquered by its western neighboring  Sweden. After a period of rule by Denmark in the 14th century, the Swedes won back independence and power in 1523 under their brave king. During the Napoleonic Wars(1814-1818)Finland was passed finally from Sweden to Russia. The opportunity came in 1917, when the Russian Revolution brought foreign rule of Finland to an end. Shortly after Soviet Russia made peace with Germany, 1919 saw the founding of the Finnish Republic.

The years between the First and second World Wars were years of progress and growing development. Finland has no coal or oil, and the nation's wealth lies in the timber(木材)from its forests, which supplies material for paper and furniture making, and in the electric power from its water.

When buying a house, you must be sure to have it checked for termites(白蚁). A termite is much like an ant in its communal(群居的)habits, although physically the two insects are different.

Like those of ants. termite colonies(群体)consist of different classes. With its own particular job. The most perfectly formed termites, both male and female, make up the reproductive class. They have eyes, hard body walls, and fully developed wings. A pair of reproductive termites founds the colony. When new reproductive termites develop, they leave to form another colony. They use their wings only this one time and then break them off.

The worker termites are small, blind, and wingless, with soft bodies. They make up the majority of the colony and do all the work. Soldiers are also wingless and blind but are larger than the workers and have hard heads and strong jaws and legs. They defend the colony and are cared for by the workers.

The male and female of the reproductive class remain inside a closed-in cell where the female lays thousands of eggs. The workers place the eggs in cells and care for them.
