We must have water to live. If the water we use is not clean and fresh ,it can make us ill. The animals that live in and around lakes and rivers must also have clean water.

Our rivers and lakes supply most of our water. The clear, blue water found by the first American settlers has changed. Many of our water sources are now polluted. They are filled with dirt and waste which cannot be cleaned out. In many places, water is not safe for most uses.

Lake Erie was once a beautiful lake. Now it has been called "a dying lake". Waste from nearly homes and factories has dumped into it . Fish can no longer live in much of its polluted water.

George Washington once called the Potomac "the finest river in the world". Now its water is no longer blue. Instead, it is a soupy (羹汤类的) green. Suds (肥皂水)  from detergents (清洁剂) used to wash clothes, often cover the water of our rivers.

Water cannot be made in a factory. Once water is polluted, it is hard to make it clean and safe. We must learn to take care of the water we now have.

Man's first real invention, and one of the most important inventions in history, was the wheel. All transportation(运输) and every machine in the world depend on it.

The wheel is the simplest yet perhaps the most remarkable of all inventions, because there are no wheels in nature - no living thing was ever created with wheels. How, then, did man come to invent the wheel?

Perhaps some early hunters found that they could roll the carcass(动物尸体) of a heavy animal through the forest on logs more easily than they could carry it. However, the logs themselves weighed a lot.

It must have taken a great prehistoric thinker a long time to imagine two thin slices of log connected a their centers by a strong stick. This would roll along just as the logs did ,yet be much lighter and easier to handle.

Thus the wheel and axle(轮轴) came into being, and with them the first carts.

1.The wheel is important because ________.

[ ]

B.all transportation depends on it

C.every machine depends on it

D.both B and C

C.there were no wheels in nature

[ ]

A.a group of early hunters

B.the first men on earth

C.a great prehistoric thinker

D.the man who made the first cart

[ ]

A.round piece of stone

B.heavy log

C.piece of metal

D.slice of log

5.The idea for making wheels may have come from ________.

A.chasing an animal

B.rolling a carcass on logs

C.watching a rolling stone

D.watching running animals

Alex felt restless. Along with his sister Rosita and his friend Hugo. Alex had been waiting in the cave for nearly three hours expecting either an attack from the returning robbers or the arrival of a rescue party, but nothing had happened. He and Rosita had had some food and a sleep, and now it was Hugo's turn to sleep after his meal. Rosita was lying in the entrance to the cave keeping watch on the valley below. Alex threw himself down beside her.

“I do hope Ruark is all right,” she said, her eyes on the view outside.“I keep hoping I will see him somewhere.”

“I'm sure he's okay,”answered Alex “I'm pretty certain the enemy thought it was a ground attack. Anyway, they were too busy rushing to get away in their landrover to waste time firing at a condor. I'm not worried about him. What I am worrying about, though, are the words on that tape that was attached to Ruark's leg. I keep saying the words to myself:

What about the cave? There's a two-metre hole at the back of it. No one will find it. There are so many caves…

The money they stole is hidden somewhere out there and I should hate them to come back and take it from under our noses.”

“Well,” replied his sister,“you heard what the man said. There are so many caves. At a guess, I can see about two hundred of them dotted about. It could take a week to look in them all.”

“Yes. It's a clever hiding place, but I think we have one clue that might help us. Ruark was perched somewhere near enough for the tape to pick up their voices. He was probably situated just above the entrance. Condors are not exactly tiny birds so he may have been on a shelf or an overhanging rock large enough to take his big feet and body.”He half closed his eyes against the strong light outside and tried to examine the opposite side of the valley.

1.The people who had been waiting in the cave were ________.

[ ]

A.Alex, Ruark and Hugo

B.Rosita, Ruark and hugo

C.Ruark, Hugo and Alex

D.Hugo, Alex and Rosita

[ ]

A.they were tired

B.it was night-time

C.the cave was where Ruark lived

D.they were hoping to be rescued

3.Alex says that he thinks the robbers ________.

[ ]

A.are likely to come back to retrieve the money

B.will not be able to find the cave where the money is hidden

C.were angry at being attacked by a condor

D.may have injured Ruark during the attack

4.In the third paragraph, Alex says that he feels ________.

[ ]

A.doubtful that Ruark will return

B.confident that Ruark is safe

C.disappointed that Ruark has abandoned them

D.certain that Ruark will locate the robbers

5.What does Alex say will help them locate the cave where the money is hidden?

[ ]

A.following Ruark when he comes back

B.watching the robbers when they return to the area

C.finding a large shelf or overhanging rock above a cave's entrance

D.searching for a cave where a condor is likely to nest

Each year, millions of people go abroad to work, study, or travel. It's a great way to find out what life is like m another part of the world! You're probably hoping to make new friends and learn about the culture in your host countryeverything from attitudes and beliefs to social customs and popular foods. But constantly having to deal with new situations can be frustrating, even stressful.

Homesickness, stress, fear, and confusion are all symptoms of “culture shock.” At first, you may feel like getting on the plane and heading home. It's OK to have those feelings, but the following are some tips to help you handle the challenges that you will face.

Don't expect to be perfect. You may feel frustrated that you have culture shock, especially since you probably spent so much time preparing for your trip. No matter how much information you read, or how well you speak the host language, it is natural to feel overwhelmed sometimes. If you give yourself some time, things will gradually get easier.

Have an open mind. While it's certainly OK to feel frustration or confusion in your new surroundings, try not to form an opinion about the new culture too soon. Don't think of the host culture as better or worse, just different-you'll be more willing to try new things.

Participate. This is obvious, but everybody needs to be reminded. Just watching life go on around you isn't good enough. You really need to try things for yourself. Don't worry about making a mistake; people in your host country will generally be very understanding and willing to help if you have questions.
