Build the highway and watch the town grow. At first a few shops appear and maybe a restaurant. Then a hotel opens. Eventually new houses are built. A village is born.

This is also how the virtual world has developed. Think of the Internet as the road carrying information between two computers. Think of the World Wide Web as the village. At first it is just a place on the virtual road where travellers meet. More travellers come bringing new kinds of information. New villages are started.

Every village has a founder. Tim Berners-Lee is the man who wrote the software programme that led to the foundation of the World Wide Web. How did he get the idea? He tells us on his own web site: “One of the things computers were not able to do was store contacts (互通信息) from different sources. The dream behind the Web is of a common space in which we commu nicate by sharing information.”

Tim Berners-Lee could have followed the Microsoft route by forming a company to sell the programmes he invented. Or he could have joined an existing company. But in his view the Web is a language, not a product, Charging a fee for using his programmes would have slowed the growth of the Web. And other companies would make similar products to compete. Instead of one World Wide Web there would be several smaller Webs. Each would use incompatible (不相容的) software. The Web is valuable because it uses a common computer language to reach people and share information. Competing webs would lose this value. Imagine if somebody sent you a bill every time you spoke a word of English.

In 1994 Tim Berners-Lee formed the newly formed World Wide Web Consortium, or W3C. More than 200 leading companies and laboratories are represented by W3C. Together they make sure that everyone no matter what their equipment or software is can work equally on the Web.

“The Web can help people to understand the way that others live and love. It helps us understand the humanity of people,” he says.

The competition among producers of personal computers is essentially a race to get the best, most innovative products to the marketplace. Marketers in this environment frequently have to make a judgement as to their competitors' role when making marketing strategy decisions. If major compettors are changing their products, then a marketer may want to follow suit to remain competitive. Apple Computer, Inc. has introduced two new, faster personal computers, the Mackintosh Ⅱ and Mackintosh SE, in anticipation of the introduction of a new PC by IBM, one of Apple's major competitors.

Apple's new computers are much faster and more powerful than its earlier models. The improved Mackintosh is able to run programs that previously were impossible to run on an Apple PC, including IBM-compatible (兼容的) programs. This compatibility feature (特性) illustrates (show) computer manufacturers' (producer) new attitude of giving customers the features they want. Making Apple computers capable of running. IBM software is Apple's effort at making the Machintosh compatible with IBM computers and thus more popular in the office, where Apple hopes to increase sales. Users of the new Apple can also accessories (附件) to make their machines specialize in specific uses, such as engineering and writing.

The new computers represent a big improvement over past models, but they also cost much more. Company officials do not think the higher price will slow down buyers who step up to a more powerful computer. Apple wants to stay in the high-price end of the personal computer market to finance research for even faster, more sophisticated computers.

Even though Apple and IBM are major competitors, both companies realize that their competitor's computers have certain features that their own models do not. The Apple line has always been popular for its sophisticated color graphics (图形), whereas the IBM machines have always been favored in offices. In the future, there will probably be more compatibility between the two companies' products, which no doubt will require that both Apple and IBM change marketing strategies.

Are you thinking of writing someone a letter? Call instead. It isn't that expensive, especially when you call during the evening, night, or weekend hours. In fact, you can make a tenminute call anywhere in the continental United States for just $ 2.60.

“Most episodes (片段) of absent - mindednessforgetting where you left something or wondering why you just entered a roomare caused by a simple lack of attention,” says Schacter. “You're supposed to remember something, but you haven't encoded it deeply.”

“Encoding”, Schacter explains, “is a special way of paying attention to an event that has a major effect on remembering it later. Failure to encode properly can create annoying situations. If you put your mobile phone in a pocket, for example, and don't pay attention to what you did because you're involved in a conversation, you'll probably forget that the phone is in the jacket now hanging in your wardrobe (衣柜).” “Your memory itself isn't failing you,” says Schacter. “Rather, you didn't give your memory system the information it needed.”

Lack of interest can also lead to absent - mindedness. “A man who can recite sports statistics (数据) from 30 years ago,” says Zelinski, “may not remember to drop a letter in the mailbox.” Women have slightly better memories than men, possibly because they pay more attention to their environment. And memory depends on just that.

“Reminders can help prevent absent - mindedness,” says Schacter. “But be sure the reminder is clear and available,” he says. If you want to remember to take medicine with lunch, put it on the kitchen tabledon't leave it in the medicine chest and write yourself a note that you keep in a pocket.

Another common episode of absent - mindedness: walking into a room and wondering why you're there. Most likely, you were thinking about something else. “Everyone does this from time to time,” says Zelinski. The best thing to do is to return to where you were before entering the room, and you'll likely remember.

1.Why does the writer think that encoding is important?

[ ]

A.It helps us understand our memory system better.

B.It enables us to remember something from our memory.

C.It expands our memory ability greatly.

D.It slows down the process of losing our memory.

2.Why do women have better memories than men?

[ ]

A.They have a wider variety of interests.

B.They are more dependent on the environment.

C.They pay more attention to things they like.

D.They are more interested in what's happening around them.

3.Why can a note in the pocket hardly serve as a reminder?

[ ]

A.Because it will easily get lost.

B.Because it's not clear enough for you to read.

C.Because it's out of your sight.

D.Because it might get mixed up with other things.

4.What do we learn from the last paragraph?

[ ]

A.If we pay more attention to one thing, we might forget another.

B.Memory depends to a certain extent on the environment.

C.Doing something again helps improve our memory.

D.If we keep forgetting things, we'd better rerurn to where we were.

5.What is the passage mainly about?

[ ]

A.The process of gradual memory loss.

B.The causes of absent - mindedness.

C.The influence of the environment on memory.

D.A way of encoding and remembering.

Whatever our differences as human beings are we all think we're more like the rest of the animal world than we realize. It is said that we share 40 per cent of our genetic (遗传的) structure with the simple worm.

But that fact has helped Sir John Sulston win the 2002 Nobel Prize for Medicine. Sir John is the founder of the Sanger Institute in Cambridge, which was set up in 1992 to get further understanding of the human genome (染色体组).

To help them do this, they turned to the worm. The nematode (线虫类的) worm is one of the earliest creatures on planet earth. It is less than one millimeter long, completely transparent and spends its entire life digging holes through sand. But it still has lots to say about human life, and what can be done to make it better.

What the worm told Sir John and his colleagues was that each of the cells in the human body is programmed like a computer. They grow, develop and die according to a set of instructions that are coded in our genetic make - up.

Many of the diseases that humans suffer from happen when these instructions go wrong or are not obeyed. When the cell refuses to die but carries on growing instead, this leads to cancer. Heart attacks and diseases like AIDS cause more cell deaths than normal, increasing the damage they do to the body. Sir John was the first scientist to prove the existence of programmed cell death.
