America is the land of the automobile. “This country has only 6 percent of the world's population out of 46 percent of the world's cars. Right now, there are 97 million privately owned cars consuming 75 billion gallons of gasoline and traveling an estimated 1,000 billion miles a year. The figures also affirm something we know every time we refill our gasoline tank. The automobile is a very thirty piece of technology. Of the total petroleum supply in the United States, 30 percent goes to quench that thirst. Every year for each passenger car, about 800 gal lons of gasoline are consumed.

Other aspects of our commitment to the automobile also bear mentioning here. It takes a great deal of energy to manufacture one automobile - about 150 million BTU's of energy. This is equivalent to 1,200 gallons of gasoline, enough to run a car for about 1,600 miles. We expend energy in the process of shipping cars from factories to showrooms, displaying them for sale and making replacement parts for repairs. One out of six jobs in the nation is associated with the automobile business. About two gallons of gasoline are consumed in the process of making every ten gallons that are pumped into an automobile's gas tank.

Building highways and parking lots has used up much of our land. It has been estimated that we have paved over 21,000 square miles of this country's surface, most of it to accommodate the automobile. The automobile is also the largest contributor to our nation's air pollution problem and a very serious one because most of its pollutants are emitted in our large metropolitan areas.

1.To make an automobile, we need ________.

[ ]

B.150 million BTU's of energy

“We leave at dawn and head out overland by jeep towards Base One. We'll get as far as we can before proceeding on foot,” Mark explained. The others sat and listened. Sarah, particularly, as a “casualty of events”, wouldn't have known what to say or suggest even if she'd been asked. But Harry had a lot to say.

“We'll never make it,” he protested. “We'll still be crossing the desert when they catch up with us. They'll know where we're heading for and they'll simply follow us and kill us out there in the desert with no one to see. They seem to know every move we make or are going to make.”

Mark said nothing, but spread his hands out as if to say “Well, what do we do then?” “We wouldn't be in this mess now,” Harry went on, almost ignoring Mark's gesture, “if we hadn't stopped to rescue Sarah.” (He glanced at her briefly.) “But since we did, we must get on - but not across the desert. There's the sand, and deep ravines (沟壑) which are almost invisible until you're right on them - and then the heat. You have to be used to going out there, and none of us is. This is no “morning at leisure ” on some pleasant holiday, you know! If we went north instead and made for the river, …”

He broke off and looked around at the others, feeling somehow that his argument was pointless. No one said anything.

“Good,” said Mark, looking around with authority, and returned to checking their stores.

A beautiful sunrise was about to burst over the horizon as the jeep headed out towards Base One.

We can make mistakes at any age. Some mistakes we make are about money. But most mistakes are about people. “Did Jerry really care when 1 broke up with Helen?” “When I got that great job, did Jim really feel good about it, as a friend? Or did he envy my luck?” “And Paul - why didn't he pick up that he was friendly just because I had a nice car?” When we look back, doubts like these can make us feel bad. But when we look back, it's too late.

Why do we go wrong about our friends - or our enemies? Sometimes what people say hides their real meaning. And if we don't really listen, we miss the feeling behing the words. Suppose someone tells you, “Yor're a lucky dog.” That's being friendly. But “lucky dog”? There's a bit of envy in those words. Maybe he doesn't see it himself. But bringing in the phrase “lucky dog” puts you down a little. What he may be saying is that he doesn't think you deserve your luck.

“Just think of all the things you have to be thankful for” is another noise that says one thing and means another. It could mean that the speaker is trying to get you to see your problem as part of your life as a whole. But is he? Wrapped up in this phrase is the thought that your problem isn't important. It's telling you to think of all the starving people in the world when you haven't got a date for Saturday night.

How can you tell the real meaning behind someone's words? One way is to take a good look at the person talking. Do his words fit the way he looks? Does what he says agree with the tone of voice? His posture (姿态)? The look in his eyes? Stop and think. The minute you spend thinking about the real meaning behind what people say may save another mistake.

1.According to the passage, the reason why we go wrong about our friends is that ________.

[ ]

A.we fail to listen carefully when they talk

B.we tend to be annoyed when we check what they say

C.they sometimes state one thing but mean another

D.we tend to doubt what our friends say

2.What does the underlined word it in the second paragraph refer to?

[ ]

A.Being friendly
B.A bit of envy.
C.A lucky dog.
D.The good luck.

3.From the passage, how many things should we pay attention to when we take a good look at the person talking?

[ ]

A.Three.
B.Five.
C.Six.
D.Four.

4.According to the passage, the author most probably is a ________.

[ ]

A.teacher
B.psychologist
C.philosopher

5.This passage is mainly about ________.

[ ]

A.how to tell the real meaning behind our words

B.what to do when you listen to others talking

C.how to avoid mistakes when communicating with people

Thomas Alva Edison lit up the world with his invention of the electric light. Without him, the world might still be a dark place. However, the electric light was not his only invention. He also invented the phonograph, the motion picture camera, and over 1,200 other things. About every two weeks he created something new.

Thomas A. Edison was born in Milan, Ohio, on February 11,1847, His family moved to Port Huron, Michigan, when he was seven years old. Surprisingly, he attended school for only two months. His mother, a former teacher, taught him a few things, but Thomas was mostly self - educated. His natural curiosity led him to start experimenting at a young age with electrical and mechanical things at home.

When he was 12 years old, he got his first job. He became a newsboy on a train that ran between Port Huron and Detroit. He set up a laboratory in a baggage car of the train so that he could continue his experiments in his spare time. Unfortunately, his first work experience did not end well. Thomas was fired when he accidentally set fire to the floor of the baggage car. Thomas then worked for five years as a telegraph operator, but he continued to spend much of his time on the job conducting experiments. He got his first patent in 1868 for a vote recorder run by electricity. However, the vote recorder was not a success. In 1870, he sold another invention, a stock - ticker, for $ 40,000.A stock - ticker is a machine that automatically prints stock prices on a tape. He was then able to build his first shop in Newark, New Jersey.

Thomas Edison was totally deaf in one ear and hard of hearing in the other, but thought of his deafness as a blessing in many ways. It kept conversations short, so that he could have more time for work. He called himself a “two - shift man” because he worked 16 out of every 24 hours. Sometimes he worked so intensely that his wife had to remind him to sleep and eat.

I might be letting my young son watch too much television. I am certainly watching too many of his programs. They can really be puzzling as they force you to ponder the mysteries of life.

For example, when Franklin (the turtle) wanted a pet, his parents didn't want it to be a frog. They felt that frogs belong in a pond. Isn't that where turtles belong?

And why is it that Little Bear's animal friends can all talk and behave like people, but his friend Emily has a dog that can only bark and fetch? Tell me that isn't a mystery!

Dog lovers can be reassured by Kipper and his friends. These dogs are very human. However, the only time they wear clothes is when they put on bathing suits to go swimming. I'm confused!

Speaking of dogs, could Pluto ever be Goofy's pet? I don't get it! What did the great Mr. Disney have in mind?

And this is unfair! The other day we watched a very nice little pig setting up a picnic. One of the foods was a big ham. Could it have been a soy ham? Is there such a thing? I hope so!

Another thing that bothers me: What if Elmo isn't real? He can't be a mere puppet! He's got a better attitude than most people. I just keep wondering.

I think we'll turn off the TV and go out for a walk. Maybe we'll run into that mouse who dresses well but certainly doesn't speak as clearly as the average bear.

1.The underlined word “ponder” in the first paragraph means ________.

[ ]

A.avoid
B.remember
C.consider
D.distant

2.The author thinks it's “unfair” when ________.

[ ]

A.a pig has a picnic because pigs are dirty animals

B.a pig eats soy beans because soy beans give pigs gas

C.a pig eats ham because ham is too expensive for farm animals

D.a pig eats ham because ham is made from pigs

3.The author probably ________.

[ ]

A.believes that Elmo is a real live creature

B.wishes that Elmo were a real live creature

C.feels that Elmo is a very annoying creature

D.won't let his son watch Sesame Street

4.The author is implying that ________.

[ ]

A.there's a TV mouse that should speak more clearly

B.TV mice should not wear good clothes

Beware of those who use the truth to deceive. When someone tells you something that is true, but leaves out important information that should be included, he can create a false impression. For example, someone might say, “I just won a hundred dollars on the lottery. It was great. I took that dollar ticket back to the store and turned it in for one hundred dollars!”

This guy's a winner, right? Maybe, maybe not. We then discover that he bought two hundred tickets, and only one was a winner. He's really a big loser!

He didn't say anything that was false, but he deliberately left out important information. That's called a half - truth. Half - truths are not technically lies, but they are just as dishonest.

Untrustworthy candidates in political campaigns often use this tactic. Let's say that during Governor Smith's last term, her state lost one million jobs and gained three million jobs. Then she seeks another term. One of her opponents runs an ad saying, “During Governor Smith's term, the state lost one million jobs!” That's true. However an honest statement would have been, “During Governor Smith's term, the state had a net gain of two million jobs.”

Advertisers will sometimes use half - truths. It's against the law to make false claims so they try to mislead you with the truth. An ad might boast, “Nine out of ten doctors recommend Yucky Pills to cure nose pimples.” It fails to mention that they only asked ten doctors and nine of them work for the Yucky Corporation.

This kind of deception happens too often. It's a sad fact of life: Lies are lies, and sometimes the truth can lie as well.

1.Which statement is true according to the article?

[ ]

A.Whenever people tell the truth, they are really lying.

B.You can't trust gamblers.

C.All governors help their states.

D.The truth can be used in dishonest ways.

2.The underlined word “deceive” means ________.

[ ]

A.mistake
B.ignore
C.fool
D.repair

3.The author clearly wants people to ________.

[ ]

A.think carefully about what they read and hear

B.wear mismatched socks during political campaigns

C.never trust anyone

D.vote for female candidates

4.The best title for this passage would be ________.

[ ]

A.Lies Are Lies
B.Everyone Lies
C.Lying with the Truth
D.Nose Pimples

As I jogged over the bridge and round the corner on my regular early morning run, he was standing opposite the jeweler's looking extremely suspicious (可疑的). But the moment he saw me, instead of trying to avoid me, he came straight across the road as I drew level with the jeweler's. Halfway across he began addressing me: “I thought you were going to…”- but his voice trailed away as he received no reply and no sign of recognition from me. It was quite obvious that he had mistaken me for someone else. But he started up again as if nothing had happened. “Good morning,” he said. “Nice to bump into someone so early. Someone to talk to. I've taken to talking to myself on this job.”

I hate meeting people when I'm out early, and I was almost out of breath. I just paused in my stride, nodded in a friendly manner, and went on up the road. The stranger had spoken quietly, and quite slowly. And I had noticed that he was well dressed, too. But if he looked suspicious dressed like that at that time of the morning, what about me? I was in a track suit, with an old sweater round my shoulders and a cap on my head. As to his odd remark about “talking to himself on the job”, I hadn't paid any attention to it, although now it began to worry me. Was he perhaps a plain clothes policeman? At the time I somehow felt he was.

I had just turned the corner into the High Street when I heard the sound of breaking glass somewhere behind me, and I thought the sound came from the street I had just left. I stopped dead and almost without thinking looked back around the corner. The stranger was not there, but almost immediately an alarm bell in the jeweler's began ringing loudly.

I found out later that a burglar had broken into the jeweler's shop and stolen watches and rings worth about £5,000.The police are still looking into the matter, but I'm afraid to go and tell them what I know now because they might even suspect me of committing the crime, and it might be difficult for me to prove my innocence (无罪). After all, I haven't offered my assistance as a witness, and the only other person around that morning was the “stranger” who had spoken to me.

1.The writer ________.

[ ]
