Not only farmers but scientists have studied weather forecastiong (预报). People, for many centuries and in all countries, have studied the weather and tried to make weather forecasts. Sometimes distant objects such as hills and tall trees seem to be very clear and near, This is a sign of much water - vapour in the air, and therefore a rain will probably come.

When distant sounds (such as the noise from a train, birds singing, or people shouting) are very clearly heard, then wet and stormy weather is on the way.

Rings round the sun are a sigh of coming rain.

Many people feel the coming of wet weather in their bones. Their joints hurt. Some birds fly high if fine weather is coming, but they fly very near the ground if rainy weather of a storm is on the way. This is probably because the insects, which they are hunting, fly low at that time. If you see a rainbow during rainy weather, this is a sign that the weather will clear up and become fine. Such rainbows come in the evening. If the start twinkle clearly at night, fine weather will continue. If a mist appears in the early morning, just about sunrise, the day will be warm.

If the sunset is mostly red in color, the following day will be fine. When big cumulous clouds (积云) appear at sunset, the bad weather will follow the next day.

If cirrus clouds remain quite still, fine weather will come. If a rainbow appears in the morning, then rainy weather will probably come. Most of the above sayings have been made up by people who have used their eyes and their brains to forecast the weather.

B.there is not much water - vapour in the air

C.there is not any water - vapour in the air

It is five o'clock. What was the time 7 hours ago? The situation corresponds to (符合) the subtraction (减去) problem 5-7=? In clock 12.

One way to answer the problem is to count the hours on an ordinary clock, but this time, count counterclockwise (逆时针). If the time is five o'clock now, then seven hours ago it was 10 o'clock. Thus, 5-7=10 in clock 12. How can you check result?

In ordinary subtraction, you can check your answer by setting up the related addition (加法) problem. For example, to check 20-13=7, ask “Is seven the number that must be added to 13 to produce 20”?

  20-13=7 can be changed into20=7+13.

To check 5-20=-15, ask“Is 5=20-15 true?” This method may be used to check a subtraction problem in clock 12.If 5-7=10 is true.

Then 5=7+10 has to be true. Indeed, 5 is equal to 7+10 in clack 12.Thus, 5-7=10 in clock. So we can know.

In clock arithmetic, as well as in ordinary arithmetic.

An Unusual Airplane Powered by Microwaves (微波动力飞机)

Canadian scientists have successfully tested an unusual airplane. The airplane is not powered by fuels. It is powered by microwaves. Microwaves can be produced by equipment on earth. When the microwaves hit the bottom of the plane's wings, instruments change them into a more usable form of energy - electricity powers the plane's engine.

The plane was developed by the Canadian government and the University of Toronto. The plane is called the sharpfire. The sharpfire is much too small to carry people or equipment. It was built only to see if the technology would work. Sharpfire is made of light weight wood. Its wings are about three and one half meters across. In its first public. A future microwave plane will be much larger than the sharpfire. The main reason for using microwave energy to power an airplane is to end the plane's need to carry fuel. Radar is very important in aviation (the aircraft industry) today. It was first introduced in the Second World War. The British used it in the great air battles over England in 1940.The British fighter planes had to be in exactly the right place at exactly the right time to meet the enemy bomber(轰炸机). In order to get there, the fighter stations had to be warned long before the bombers actually appeared. They also had to know the course the bombers were following. This would have been impossible without radar.

The Germans also used radar later in the war when the great air raids (袭击) against their cities began. On both sides the system was almost the same in a number of ways. The heart of the radar warning system was the “operations centre”. This was a huge system of rooms, usually below the ground. Radar showed the position of the enemy bombers while the bombers were still far away. In the centre of the main operations room there was usually a huge map on a large table. The position of the bombers was also shown on this table. Anybody who looked at it could see immediately where the bombers were at that moment. The people in the radar centre also had to decide where the bombes were going, or what the likely targets (目标) were. When this had been calculated the people in those places were warned. As they hurried to air raid shelters below the ground, fighter planes were taking to the air. The fighters were never out of radio contact (联络) with the radar centre.

At night, radar was a pair of eyes that guided the fighters to bombers that they could not see. A radar controller on the ground told the pilot exactly where to go. Usually the pilot himself did not see the bomber until he was a few seconds away from it. Then he would open fire. None of these thing could have happened without raday.

Western States See Largest Increase in Murder, Rape Rates

By Bryan Robinson

  NEWS. com

Dec. 16 - Violent crime overall is down nationwide but rising in the West, and experts believe a number of factors - a growing youth population, inmates being released from prison, and a decline in the economy - could be fueling (causing) the increase in that region.

The FBI reported today that its preliminary (初步的) statistics (统计数字) showed that crime in the first six months of 2002 nationwide was up 1.3 percent from the same period last year. The FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting Program found that crime dropped slightly (a little) in the Northeast and Midwest - 2.1 percent and 1.4 percent, respectively - but rose in the South and especially the West.

Overall crime rose 5.9 percent in the West, the FBI said. Crime was up in all Western states: Preliminary statistics showed that violent crime had risen 2.2 percent, with a 7.6 percent increase in murder.

To find out why certain communities have higher crime rates than others, Green said, officials have to look at their demographics (人口统计状况), which drugs are infiltrating (渗透) the area and which kind of crimes are on the rise.

In additon, experts said, the FBI's statistics do not mean that crime in an entire state may be on the rise. There may be certain “hot spots” for crime that are raising the crime rates.

“In Los Angeles, there are certain areas where the unemployment rate is 15 percent, compared to 6 percent of the rest of the country. You have idle (having nothing to do) young males - they're not going anywhere, they have nothing to do, nothing to lose,” said Mike Rustigan, professor of criminology at San Francisco State University.

“Idle, nothing to lose, and they have access to (have right to ) guns - that's a bad combination…You have a lot of gang (group) activity and payback - types of shootings.”

However, Rustigan stressed (emphasize) there is no one cause for rising crime rates. Every state, every city is different.

Where and when were the first passports issued?

The idea of giving people some kind of document affording them safe passage through another country may go back as far as the Egyptian pharaohs (法老), who are thought to have issued their subjects (臣民) with cartouches (图形) bearing the ruler's name.

One of the first references to an English passport was in the reign (统治) of King Henry V, who, in an act (法案) of 1414, issued “Safe Conducts” (安全通行证), warning foreigners to allow his subjects to move around unmolested (不受骚扰的) within certain parameters(界限) of destination, time and purpose. In return, no Englishman would injure or rob a foreigner who carried one of Henry's Safe Conducts.

When and why did the number 13become a symbol of bad luck?

The number 13 has been linked to untimely death since Jesus was betrayed (背叛) by Judas, who was the thirteenth person at the Last Supper. This helps explain why 13 is considered particularly dire (terrible) in the dining room. One superstition (迷信) states that the last to sit at a table for 13 will die within a year.

Another version is that the first to rise from the table will perish (die). So strong was the belief in England and Scotland that groups of 13 would sometimes try to cheat the devil by sitting or rising simultaneously, so that no one would be first or last.

Friday the thirteenth is considered doubly disastrous because Jesus was crucified on Friday.

Non-Christians, however, don't necessarily view 13 as unlucky. “In the Middle east, odd numbers tend to be regarded as good,” says University of Toronto anthropology professor Janice Bobby. In Chinese culture, instead of fearing 13, people avoid any number containing a four because it has the same pronunciation as the word for death.

1.The passport first issued in England was to ________.

[ ]

A.show King Henry V's power

B.protect the foreigners traveling in England

C.make people travel safely at any time, for any purpose

D.make the travel safe for both Englishmen and foreigners

B.Almost all the peoples in the world have their own superstitions.

C.The purpose of the passport issued by the Egyptian pharaohs was to afford people safe

D.The usage of passports in England is more popular than in Egypt.

[ ]

A.at the same time.
B.quickly.
C.slowly.

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - Can a star basketball player also be a star hip - hop singer? If you ask Shaquille O'Neal and some of his NBA fellows, they'll say “Sure”.

In the NBA, hip - hop music is as common as the jump shot. Hip - hop is similar to rap (说唱) music and is especially popular with young African Americans. This music is played before basketball games during halftime. Many of the players, like Shaquille O'Neal of the Los Angeles Lakers, write rap rhymes when they travel on airplanes from one city to another.

The NBA has a closer connection to hip-hop than any other sports league. This is partly because of the large number of African-American players, but also because the basketball league just loves hip-hop. Every February, the NBA invites popular rap singers to perform at its All-Star weekend.

When they play basketball, some of the younger stars even try to look like hip - hop singers. Like rap stars, they don't smile in photographs and videos. They try to trouble the players on the other team by looking tough (凶). “Hip-hop is just part of many players' culture,” says Kerry Kittles on the New Jersey Nets team. “All of us grew up listening to rap and Playing basketball, and the rappers grew up doing the same thing. A lot of players want to be rappers, and a lot of rappers would like to be players.”

Master P is a famous rap star who wants to be a basketball player. The Charlotte Hornets and the Toronto Raptors have invited him to their training camps. They enjoy listening to his music, but many people think that he is not good enough at basketball to be on an NBA team.

Shaquille O'Neal, whose nickname is Shaq, is the greatest example of an NBA player who became a rapper. He has made four successful rap albums. One of his rap songs, “It Was All a Dream,” tells how he felt when he became successful.
