We think of a dog as man's best friend. Yet sometimes even the friendliest dog can become a creature that brings death with its bite! Not because it has changed its character, but because it has become infected(感染) with a terrible disease.

This disease is called“rabies”(狂犬病). It infects the brain and the spinal cord(脊髓), and these are both vital to life. The infection is caused by a virus(病毒); an organism(有机体) which is too small to be seen with the ordinary microscope.

Now we usually think of this disease in connection with dogs, and that is because man most often receives the disease from a dog infected with the virus. But rabies can infect all warm-blooded animals, including wolves, foxes, cows, cats, and even bats. Most of these other creatures, however, seldom pass on the disease to man.

A dog may become infected with rabies and its owner may not know it for some time. This is because the disease may take four to six weeks to show up. The first signs are when the dog becomes quiet, has fever, and is not interested in food Then it becomes excited. Saliva(唾液) froths from the mouth. It growls and barks, and is likely to bite. After such symptoms(症状) appear, a dog is likely to die within three to five days. Since the virus is in the saliva, the disease is passed on by biting.

The horrible thing about this disease is that once it appears in man or animals, death is almost certain. That is why it is important to prevent the disease, and go to a doctor at once if one has been bitten by a dog. There is a serum(血清) that acts against the virus before it can spread, but it must be taken within three days of being bitten.

Probably you have seen photographs of the Grand Canyon (峡谷), the great valley in the desert country of Arizona. But you must go there yourself to feel its true size and beauty. The Grand Canyon is one of the greatest natural wonders of the world.

The Colorado River formed the Grand Canyon over millions of years. Slowly, the river cut down through hard rock. At the same time, the land was rising. Today, the canyon is one and a half kilometers deep and 445 kilometres long. The oldest rocks at the bottom of the canyon are more than 1 billion years old. The width varies from about 200 metres to 29 kilometres across. The rim(边缘) or top of the canyon is about 2,300 metres above sea level on the South Rim, and about 3,000 metres on the other side ,the North Rim As a result, there are different kinds of plants and animals on apposite sides of the canyon The South Rim is dry desert country. The North Rim has tall forests.

The canyon looks different at different times of day, and in different seasons and weather. At sunrise and sunset the red, gold, brown, and orange colours of the rocks are especially clear and bright. In winter, the canyon is partly covered with snow.

The view from the South Rim of the Grand Canyon is the best. Most visitors come to the South Rim and stay in campgrounds or hotels. Every point along the canyon's edge offers a different view.

The North Rim of the Canyon is quieter. It takes all day to drive there from the South Rim because there is only one bridge across the Colorado River. On the way, you go through Navado Indian lands, and a colourful pink desert called“The Painted Desert”.

You can walk down into the Grand Canyon, or you can go dawn on the back of a mule(小型电动机车), You can also take a boat trip down the Colorado River, and camp on the beaches at night. But whether you see the Grand Canyon from the top or the bottom, ii will be an experience that you will never forget.

Why is a full moon, yellower and bigger when it is coming up than when it is higher in the sky?

That's a good question about something that we all can see. Let's talk about the moon's color first.

We see the moon only because of the sunlight that falls on it and is reflected. Actually, the moon is not a very good reflector, because its surface is all rocks and dirt. We see it in almost its true color when it is high in the sky.

When the moon first comes up, its light reaches our eyes after an extra-long path through the atmosphere(大气). There are lots of particles(微粒)scattering(分散)light in that long path. Blue light is scattered more than other colors, which means that it doesn't reach your eyes. The light that is left over looks yellow to your eye.

Now about the other questionwhy the moon seems to change in size. That's more complicated. It's not an effect of the atmosphere, the way color is; it's not caused by something fooling your eyes. It seems, instead, to be caused by something that fools your brainan illusion(错觉).

Here's a drawing that creates an illusion. The two cones are really the same size. But the rest of the drawing makes the right-hand cone seem farther away. Your brain knows that faraway objects are really larger than they look. It decided that the right-hand cone must be larger because it seems to be farther away.

Similarly, when you see the moon just come up over a line of trees or house-or whatever makes the horizon(地平线) it may be that your brain decided that the moon must be larger because it seems to be farther away.

1.The moon doesn't reflect the sunlight very well because ________.

[ ]

A.it is high in the sky
B.its surface is rough
C.its surface is white
D.it isn't a good reflector

2.Which statement is not true according to the passage?

[ ]

A.The moon is farther away from us when it rises than it is high in the sky.

B.The moonlight is yellow when it comes up.

C.In the course of the moon's rising, the moonlight first looks blue and then yellow.

D.In the atmosphere, many small particles make the moonlight lose its blue color.

3.Which statement is true according to the passage?

[ ]

A.In the course of its rising, the moon is getting smaller and smaller.

B.The size of the moon is more complicated than its color.

C.The atmosphere has the same effect on the moon's size as on its color.

D.The change in the moon's size is caused by an illusion while that in its color is caused by the atmosphere.

Tell the Truth

Miss Enderby, the headmistress, stopped Anna one day in the passage(走廊).

“Now,”she said,“I want you to tell me the truth, my dear.”“Naturally,”said Anna shortly, fearing something terrible had happened. What on earth had she done? Could that light pat(轻拍) on the side of Betty head have made her seriously ill? Had that tablet(药片)given to Johnny for his headache yesterday caused his death during the night?

Miss Enderby explained before Anna could think of further worrying possibilities.

“I have had a most serious accusation(遣责、非难) made against you by Mrs Bond.”

“Mrs Bond?”repeated Anna, not understanding. Janet Bond was a quiet little mother of a child. As far as Anna could remember she had never had caused to say an angry word to the girl.

“Mrs Bond,”went on Miss Enderby seriously,“tell me that you swore(咒骂) at her daughter yesterday afternoon.”

“Swore?”cried Anna heatedly.“I don't swear. At least not in school,”she added honestly.

“But never, never at Janet Bond. There's never been any need.”

“Mrs Bond's story is that Janet was a little late back to school in the afternoon According to her, the child had to spend some time in the W.C, which meant she set out from home a little late.”

“Just a minute,”said Anna, beginning to understand.“she did come late, very late. I'd called the roll and marked her absence, of course. Then she wandered in , when we'd started our papercutting , and I believe I said she was a nuisance(讨厌的家伙). She didn't appear to hear, and was certainly quite unmoved and cheerful.”

“Ah, a nuisance.”Miss Enderby jumped on the word.“Yor're sure you only said a nuisance?”

“Mrs Bond said that you called her child‘blasted(该死的) nuisance’. Is that true?”

TWO teams of astronomers using the Hubble Space Telescope and other instruments have found evidence(证据)of a type of black hole that has never been seen before.

Roeland Van Der Marel of the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore said last week his group has confirmed(证实) the existence of a midsized black hole in a cluster (group) of stars called M15, about 32,000 light years away.

Yan Der Marel said the black hole has about 4,000 times the mass of the sun, which makes it the smallest galactic(银河的)black hole ever found.

Another group, led by Michael Rich of the University of California, Los Angeles, looked into a cluster of stars called GI and found a black hole that has about. 20,000 times the mass of the sun. It is some 2.2 million light years away.

Using the motion of stars within the clusters, the astronomers could determine the mass of the star groups and of the black holes. They found that the ratio(rate) of the mass of black holes to the mass of globular (球状的) clusters (smaller than a galaxy ) was precisely (精确地) the same as the ratio between supermassive (超质地的) black holes and galaxies. This suggests a neat, uniform(一致的) universal truth that applies the same mass ratio to black holes of all sizes everywhere, explains Karl Gebhardt of the University of Texas, a member of the G1 team.

The new discovery may help astronomers answer a basic question: Which came first. galaxies or black holes? Both theories have been proposed and finding intermediatesized(中等规模的) black holes may help answer that question.

On line doctors offering advice based on normal symptoms(症状) are the most obvious example. Increasingly, however, remote diagnosis (远程诊断)will be based on real physiological data(生物数据) from the actual patient. A group from the University of Kentucky has shown that by using personal date assistance plus a mobile phone; it is perfectly practical to send a patient's important signs over the telephone. With this kind of equipment, the cry asking whether there was a doctor in the house could well be a thing of the past.

Other medical technology groups are working on applying telemedicine to rural (countryside) care.
