A few years ago it was popular to speak of a generation gap, disagreement between young people and their elders.Parents said that children did not show them proper respect and obedience, while children complained that their parents did not understand them at all. What had gone wrong? Why had the generation gap suddenly appeared? Actually the generation gap has been around for a long time. Many people argue that a gap is built into the fabric (结构) of our society.

One important cause of the generation gap is the chance that young people have to choose their own ways of life.In more traditional societies, when children grow up, they are expected to live in the same area as their parents, to marry people that their parents know and agree to, and to continue the family occupation (职业).In our society, young people often travel great distances for their education, move out of the family home at an early age, marry or live with people whom their parents have never met, and choose occupations different from those of their parents.

In our easily changing society, parents often expect their children to do better than they did: to find better jobs, to make more money, and to do all the things that they were unable to do.Often, however, the strong desire that parents have for their children are another cause of the disagreement between them.Often, they discover that they have very little in common with each other.

Finally, the speed at which changes take place in our society is another cause of the gap between the generations. In a traditional culture, elderly people are valued for their wisdom, but in our society the knowledge of a lifetime may become out of date overnight. The young and the old seem to live in two very different worlds, separated by different skills and abilities.

No doubt, the generation gap will continue to be a feature (特点) of American life for some time to come. Its causes are rooted in the freedom and changes of our society, and in the rapid speed at which society changes.

Today, air travel is far safer than driving a car on a busy motor-way.But still there is a danger that grows every year.Airliners get larger and larger. Some airplanes can carry over 300 passengers. And the air itself becomes more and more crowded. If one large airliner struck into another in midair, 600 lives could be lost.

From the moment an airliner takes off to the moment it lands, every movement is watched on radar screens.Air traffic controllers tell the pilot exactly when to turn, when to climb, and when to come down. The air traffic controllers around a busy airport like London-Heathrow may deal with 2,500 planes a day.Not all of them actually land at the airport.Any plane that flies near the airport comes under the orders of the controllers there.Even a small mistake on their part could cause a terrible accident.

Recently such a disaster almost happened. Two large jets were flying towards the airport. One was carrying 69 passengers from Toronto, the other 176 passengers from Chicago. An air traffic controller noticed on his radar screen that the two planes were too close to each other. He ordered one to turn to the right and to climb. But he made a mistake. He ordered the wrong plane to do this. So, instead of turning away from the second plane, the first plane turned towards it.Fifteen seconds later it flew directly in front of the second plane. They avoided each other by the smallest part of a second. The distance between them was less than that of a large swimming pool. This is an example of the danger that grows every year.

Many people believe the glare from snow causes snowblindness.Yet, with dark glasses or not, they find themselves suffering from headaches and watering eyes, and even snowblindness, when exposed to several hours of “snow light”.

The United States army has now determined that glare from snow does not cause snowblindness in troops in a snow-covered country.Rather, a man's eyes frequently find nothing to focus on in a broad space of snow-covered without grass land.So his gaze continually moves and jumps back and forth over the entire landscape in search of something to look at.Finding something, hour after hour, the eyes never stop searching and the eyeballs become tired and the eye muscles ache.Nature makes up for this discomfort by producing more and more fluid (流体) which covers the eyeball. The fluid covers the eyeball in increasing quantity until it makes eyes difficult to see dearly, and the result is total, even though for a short time, snowblindness.

Experiments led the Army to a simple method of overcoming this problem.Scouts (侦察兵) ahead of the troops are trained to shake snow from evergreen bushes, creating a dotted line as they cross completely snow-covered landscape.Even the scouts themselves throw lightweight, dark-colored objects ahead on which they can focus too.The men following can then see something.Their gaze is arrested.Their eyes focus on a bush and having found something to see, stop searching the snow-blanketed landscape.By focusing their attention on one object at a time, the men can cross the snow without becoming hopelessly snowblind or lost.In this way the problem of crossing a continuous white land is overcome.

1.To prevent snowblindness caused by the strong light from snow, wearing glasses or not________.

[ ]

A.depends on whether the snow is white enough

B.makes no difference

C.makes much difference

D.depends on whether the snow is thick

2.When the eyes are tired, tears flow out ________.

[ ]

A.to clear the vision

B.to make the eyes stop searching

C.to make the vision unclear

D.to produce more and more liquid

3.Snowblindness can be avoided ________.

[ ]

A.by moving one's gaze back and forth

B.by walking ahead and keeping looking around

C.by making up for the discomfort of one's eyes

D.by providing the eyes with something to focus on

4.What is the probable meaning of the underlined part Their gaze is arrested?

[ ]

A.They get something to look at.

B.They can only look at one spot.

C.Their eyes are clear.

D.They can't see freely.

Want a glance of the future of health care? Take a look at the way various networks of patient care are being connected to one another, and how this new connectivity is being exploited to deliver medicine to the patient, no matter where he or she may be.

Online doctors offering advice based on normal symptoms are the most obvious example.Increasingly, however, remote diagnosis (远程诊断) will be based on real physiological data (生理数据) from the actual patient.A group from the University of Kentucky has shown that by using personal data assistance plus a mobile phone, it is perfectly practical to send a patient's important signs over the telephone. With this kind of equipment, the cry asking whether there was a doctor in the house could well be a thing of the past.

Other medical technology groups are working on applying telemedicine to rural (countryside) care. And at least one team wants to use telemedicine as a tool for disaster need ?especially after earthquakes. On the whole, the trend is towards providing global access to medical data and experts' opinions.

But there is one problem.Bandwidth (宽带) is the limiting factor for sending complex medical pictures around the world, CU photos being one of the biggest bandwidth users.Communication satellites may be able to deal with the short-term needs during disasters such as earthquakes or wars. But medicine is looking towards both the second generation Internet and third generation mobile phones for the future of remote medical service.

Doctors have met to discuss computer-based tools for medical diagnosis, training and telemedicine. With the falling price of broadband communications, the new technologies should start a new time when telemedicine and the sharing of medical information, experts' opinions and diagnosis are common.

[ ]

A.the use of telemedicine

B.the on-lined doctors

C.medical care and treatment

A.Patients don't need doctors in hospitals any more.

B.It is impossible to send a patient's signs over the telephone.

C.Many teams use telemedicine dealing with disasters now.

D.Broadband communications will become cheaper in the future.

3.The “problem” in the fourth paragraph refers to the fact that________.

[ ]

A.bandwidth isn't big enough to send complex medical pictures

B.the second-generation of Internet has not become popular yet

C.communication satellites can only deal with short-termneeds

D.there is not enough equipment for spreading the medical care

The common cold is the world's most widespread illness, which is plagues (疫病) that flesh receives.

The most widespread fallacy (谬误) of all is that colds caused by cold. They are not. They are caused by viruses (病毒) passing on from person to person. You catch a cold by coming into contact, directly or indirectly, with someone who already has one.If cold causes colds, it would be reasonable to expect the Eskimos to suffer from them forever. But they do not.And in isolated arctic regions explorers have reported being free from colds until coming into contact again with infected people from the outside world by way of packages and mail dropped from airplanes.

During the First World War soldiers who spent long periods in the trenches (战壕),cold and wet, showed no increased tendency to catch colds.

In the Second World War prisoners at the notorious Auschwitz concentration camp (奥斯维辛集中营) naked and starving, were astonished to find that they seldom had colds.

At the Common Cold Research Unit in England, volunteers took part in experiments in which they gave themselves to the discomforts of being cold and wet for long stretches of time. After taking hot baths, they put on bathing suits, allowed themselves to be with cold water, and then stood about dripping wet in drafty room. Some wore wet socks all day while others exercised in the rain until close to exhaustion. Not one of the volunteers came down with a cold unless a cold virus was actually dropped in his nose.

If, then, cold and wet have nothing to do with catching colds, why are they more frequent in the winter? Despite the most painstaking research, no one has yet found the answer. One explanation offered by scientists is that people tend to stay together indoors more in cold weather than at other times, and this makes it easier for cold viruses to be passed on.

No one has yet found a cure for the cold. There are drugs and pain suppressors (止痛片) such as aspirin, but all they do is to relieve the symptoms.

The respiratory (呼吸的) virus known as SARS has appeared to spread in the United States only to family members of health workers with close contact to a sick person.

On Tuesday, the head of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention said there might be a case of severe respiratory syndrome (综合征) spreading through the workplace.
