Body language is a very powerful tool of communication, not only between people but in the animal world as well.

In many instances, we produce idioms, which are all understandable by borrowing examples from animal communication.

For example, we know that a frightened cat will arch(拱起)its back high in a rigid curve(拱形). From this staring point we might hear the expression“He gets my back up”meaning“He makes me angry”.

In the same manner, we know that many animals, if challenged by attackers, will not turn and run away because this will encourage the attackers to attack them more forcefully. Instead, they will move backwards slowly to get out of harm’s way, always still facing their attackers. We call this action“backing off”and it can be used just as well with humans as with animals.

In the case of humans, however, the back-off may not be physical but oral, as in using a kinder tone voice and gentler words instead of fighting against the attackers.

2.In order not to be attacked by its enemy, the animal will ________.

[ ]

A.move backwards slowly

[ ]

A.to escape from the attackers

B.to get away quickly

C.to keep out the attackers

D.to avoid the attackers in words

4.Which of the following is wrong according to the article?

[ ]

A.To learn knowledge, humans must learn from animals.

B.Both humans and animals have body languages.

C.Both humans and animals have ways of getting out of harm.

D.“Face your attackers”means to encourage yourself.

5.What is mentioned in this article belongs to a study of English ________.

[ ]

A.grammar
B.idioms

Chicago-lying in the east of the USA-is a rather young American city. It was almost completely rebuilt after the Great Fire of 1871. One’s first impression of the city may include streams of cars running to and for on the highways, skyscrapers and the wide green water of Lake Michigan, which lies to the northeast of the city. The area of the city is over 228 square miles with a population of about 3 million.

The climate of Chicago on the whole is almost the same as that of Beijing with rather hot days in summer, colorful and fresh days in fall and icy but often clear days in winter. The spring in Chicago is also a little changeable in temperature. For instance, I saw a snowfall in early April this year while some of the flowers were already in full bloom. Chicago is famous for its frequent strong winds, and as a result has got the name of“the windy city”.

Cross was what people call a mystery(神秘和)man. We had known him for over five years, even since he became a member of our club. But he had a way of keeping his personal life to himself in all but unimportant facts. We knew his address, though he did not ever invite us to his home, and his age too, but only small matters of this kind.

It appeared that he did not have to work for a living as we did. He had once mentioned a piece of property left by someone on which he managed to live comfortably. He was not, however, a man of luxurious(奢侈的)habits: he was not especially well-dressed and he did not even have a car. At the age of forty-five he was still single, since marriage was not a subject(话题)he ever discussed. We had no means of finding out whether he regretted the lack of a wife.

Cross disappeared suddenly from our circle shortly after we came to learn the first really meaningful facts about our mystery man. From reports that appeared in the newspapers, together with photographs of a man who was, without any doubt, our Mr Cross, it was discovered that he was a most skilled house -breaker, operating mainly in the London area; and that he had practised this for many years, until he was caught and sent to prison.

Within a few short years, girls in Europe have become heavier smokers than boys, for reasons experts still fail to understand, according to a British study presented(递交)last week to an international conference on smoking.

Anti-smoking activists(积极分子)at the second“Tobacco or Health”conference in the Canary Islands pointed out that while adults(grown-ups) were giving up smoking in ever growing numbers, more and more young people were taking up the habit, particularly girls.

One morning when we had been riding for five hours, we came to a bridge where the railway cross a pond(池塘). For 30 feet there was nothing but the widely-spaced wooden sleepers(枕木) under our wheels, and nothing to stop us falling into the steaming pond below if we overbalanced. Right under the bridge lay the body of a dead cow. I watched Mat as he approached(接近) the bridge and rode straight over, without even slowing down. I stopped.

“What’s up?”he cried out from the other side.

“I’m not riding over that thing. If I slip, I’ll be in there with that cow.”

“There’s nothing to it, I just did it, didn’t I?”

“You are stronger and taller. My feet don’t touch the ground. You do it for me!”

Mat said strength didn’t come into it and rode off. I knew he would give me at least an hour before coming to help. All right! Enough cookies, Cola, and chips! It seems that junk food is all that the children want to eat these days. Television controls their tastes. The kids see well-known people eating potato chips, candy and other processed food, and they want to be like their heroes. How do they do it? They eat the same food. I wish there were more characters like old Popeye, the sailor, who ate spinach and not French fries.

Now I don’t expect my children to eat healthy food because I like brown rice(糙米), beans, and fresh vegetables. I’m glad to cook traditional meals of meat and potatoes for them. I really can’t be too upset with the kids because most adults aren’t careful about what they eat. The other night, my wife and I went to a party where there was plenty to drink but very little for us to eat. They served hot dogs, with all those preservatives, and hamburgers were filled with chemicals so that they looked better. Besides the meat, they had sugar-filled cookies and cake, and, of course, chips. I don’t want the world to change because of me, but I think that people should realize that there are alternatives to eating meat. They always tell me that I probably don’t get my essential proteins. I feel better than ever and I’m sure that it’s because I’m a vegetarian. I would really like to see more television advertisements which show the benefits of good, healthy, and natural food.
