Within fifteen years Britain and other nations should get ready to the building of huge industrial complexes (工业联合体) for the recycling of waste. The word rubbish could lose its meaning because everything that goes into the dumps would be made into something useful. Even the most dangerous and unpleasant wastes would provide energy if nothing else.

The latest project is to take a city of around half a millionin habitants and discover exactly what raw materials go into it and what go out. The aim is to find out how much of these raw materials could be provided if a plant for recycling waste were built just outside the city. This plant would recycle (回收) not only metal such as steel, lead and copper, but also paper and rubber as well.

Another new project is being set up to discover the best ways of sorting and separating the rubbish. When this project is complete, the rubbish will be processed like this: first, it will pass through sharp metal bars that will tear open the plastic bags in which rubbish is usually packed (包,裹) ; then it will pass through a powerful fan to separate the lightest dements from the heavy solids; after that grounders and rollers will break up everything that can be broken. Finally, the rubbish will pass under magnets (磁铁), which will remove the bits of iron and steel; the rubber and plastic will then be sorted out in the final stage .

The first full-scale (全面的,完全的) giant (巨大的) recycling plants are, perhaps, fifteen years away. Indeed, with the growing cost of transporting rubbish to more distant dumps(垃圾堆) , some big cities will be forced to build their own recycling plants before long.

The coolest idea in stroke (中风) treatment is refrigeration. Yes, cold is hot.

Many doctors believe they can reduce the lasting forever damage after a stroke by quickly dropping patient body temperatures for a day or two, basically storing their brains on ice.“It’s like putting food in the refrigerator. It doesn’t go bad. You slew down all the processes,” says Dr David Tong of Stanford University.

The approach is new, but the understanding behind it—that cold protects the brain like a fridge keeps tomatoes—has been recognized for centuries.

Everyone knows a story of a child who falls into an icypond is fished out after 45 minutes and then is warmed up and is perfectly OK. The cold water stops biological processes that ordinarily would kill brain cells almost immediately. Performed occasionally in surgery (外科), cooling the sick was still considered too risky and unpleasant and impractical for the 700,000 strokes in the US each year. Instead, researchers put their faith in medicines. But that goal has been all too difficult to catch as dozens of supposedly brain-protecting drugs failed testing over that past ten years.

Now, supported by fresh science and new technology, doctors are looking again at cold. They hope soon to prove it a workable and valuable first step for treating stroke victims.

In theory, doctors say, cooling the head should slow or even stop the destruction of weak brain cells. Several experiments have indictated this might be the case.

Currently the whole body must be cooled, using air-cooled blankets and sometimes packing in ice or robbing with alcohol.

Deep-cooling is already sometimes used to minimize damage during some surgery. It was also the way in the early days of open-heart surgery before the invention of the movement of blood machines that pump the blood while the heart is stopped. For these operations, doctors often took patients to such low temperatures that dangerous complications (并发症) occurred, such as irregular heartbeats and blood clotting (凝结成块).

Before 1945, hardly anyone outside of New Mexico had ever heard of Alamogordo. In 1960 its population numbered 21, 723. Ever since 1898, when the town had been built by the Southern Pacific Railroad, Alamogordo had been a lonely town. The land around it was largely desert, and largely empty.

Because it was isolated (被隔离的) and because the weather was almost always clear and peaceful, a spot of desert near Alamogordo was chosen as the test site for the first atomic bomb ever exploded. The secret name of the test was Zero.

At dawn on July 16, 1945, the atomic bomb was set off. Observers agreed that they had witnessed (见证) something unlike anything ever seen by man before: a huge, colorful fireball, more brilliant than the sun, flashing as it rose for miles in to the air. Never before had man released (释放) so much power at one time, nor had any nation ever possessed a weapon as terrible and destructive as the atomic bomb.

For several weeks, the test was kept secret. When an atomic bomb was dropped from an American plane on Hiroshima, Japan, newspapers and radio stations all over America told of the test of the bomb in New Mexico. Almost everybody was surprised to learn where the bomb had been made and tested; the deserts of the Southwest had hidden the secret well.

When news of the atomic bomb and its destructiveness was announced, people all over the world wondered what other new weapons were being prepared in the New Mexico desert. Some people doubted that the secret of making atomic bombs could be kept from other countries. Some even doubted the wisdom of using so powerful a weapon. The next great land area that man hopes to colonize is the moon. In size it is nearly equal to the area of North and South America. However, it presents hostile (敌对的) environment. Temperatures range from +120 to-150 degrees Centigrade.

There is no air, no water.

Today there is considerable scientific speculation about living on the moon. When man will begin life on the lunar surface is still not determined. But experts believe that colonization wilt take place in three steps. First, there will be increasing periods of exploration with temporary shelters. These periods will be followed by longer stays with housing under the surface of the moon and daily necessities brought by the colonizers themselves. Finally, colonies that are selfsupporting will be established.

The main job of the early settlers will be able to stay alive. They will have to plant crops to produce food and oxygen and find water sources. After this is done, the settlers will have time to explore the possibilities of commercial development and to make discoveries important to science.

The characteristics of the moon that make it bad for human may make it ideal for certain kind of manufacturing. Operations requiring a vacuum, extremely cold or sterility (无菌状态) are examples. Industrial diamond may be produced on the moon.

Every year there are changes in climate in different parts of the world. Some of these changes are due to natural causes. However, some climate changes are caused by air pollution and these changes may increase.

If the pollution affects the level of carbon dioxide (二氧化碳) in the atmosphere, the results are likely to be serious. Carbon dioxide has only a small part of the atmosphere. But it has an important function in keeping the balance between radiation from the sun entering the atmosphere and radiation leaving the Earth. Some of the radiation is absorbed by the Earth and some is radiated back into the atmosphere. The carbon dioxide in the atmosphere prevents some of the radiation from leaving the atmosphere. Thus the heat remains in the atmosphere and carbon dioxide helps to prevent the temperature of the Earth from falling.

If the proportion of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is increased as a result of air pollution, the temperature of the atmosphere may rise. This might cause the ice in the North and the South to melt. If this happened, the sea level could rise and parts of the Earth would be flooded, This happening is not quite likely but the possibility exists.

There is also a fairly strong possibility that the dust level in the atmosphere will rise as a result of industrial pollution. This dust pollution will reflect sunlight hack into space. If this happens less sunlight will reach the Earth and the temperature will fall.

Another danger comes from the destruction of the Earth’s vegetation (植物) such as the forests of Brazil, which are being cleared away for farmland and cities. Trees use carbon dioxide and their destruction may upset the balance of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

1.The main purpose of this passage is to tell us that ________.

[ ]

A.the climate of the world is always changing

B.air pollution has greatly affected the climate of the world

C.carbon dioxide has something to do with climate dangers

D.the climate of the world is subjected to (使受到) dangers from air pollution

2.From this passage we learn that carbon dioxide ________.

[ ]

A.helps to prevent the temperature of the Earth from rising

B.keeps much of the sun’s radiation from entering the atmosphere

C.plays an important part in keeping the balance of the temperature of the Earth

D.is one of natural causes of climate changes

3.Judging from this passage, if the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere went down, the temperature of the Earthwould ________.

[ ]

A.become higher
B.either rise or fall
C.become lower
D.neither rise nor fall

4.Which of the following is not the possible serious outcomes of air pollution related to climate changes?

[ ]

A.Parts of the Earth would be flooded one day.

B.Less sunlight would reach the Earth.

C.The temperature of the Earth might rise.

D.The Earth’s vegetation might be destroyed.

5.It is obvious that the author ________.

[ ]

A.is for the opinion that the climate changes are due to natural causes

B.afraid that air pollution will greatly change the climate of the would

C.hopes that more studies should be made on the worlds’s climate

D.suggests that steps be taken to prevent the destruction of the Earth’s vegetation

English is the native or official language of one-fifth of the land area of the world. It is spoken in North America, Great Britain, Australia, and New Zealand. In South Africa and India it is one of the official languages.

More people study English than any other language. In many countries, the textbooks in universities are in English. Many university classes are taught in English even though the native language is not English.

English is the language of international communication. It is the language of international business and science. More than three-fourths of the world’s mail is written in English. More than half of the scientific research journals are in English. Most other languages have borrowed many English words.

Why did English become the international language? In the middle of the nineteenth century, French was the international language. Then Britain became very powerful in the world. England started colonies in North America and India in the seventeenth century. By 1900 England also had colonies in other parts of Asia, Africa and the South Pacific. The people in the colonies had to use English. Slowly it became more important than French internationally. After the Second World War, the United States became very powerful, and even more people began to learn English.

Is English a good international language? It has more words than any other language. The grammar is simpler than in the other major languages. However, English spelling is difficult. Foreigners all have trouble spelling English. So do native speakers!

Since 1880, people have invented over fifty artificial (notnatural) languages. No one speaks them as a native language. However, none of them has ever become popular. Some people don’t want to study English, but it is the international language. There is no way to change that now.

People with had health customs or habits have a much greater chance of suffering serious diseases and needing costly medical care, but good habits, such as a program or physical exercise, appear to protect health.

The most of the patients who were in the hospital for a long time and who faced high medical costs were persons who were overweight, who smoked heavily, or who drank too much alcohol. Persons with such bad habits faced at least a 50 percent greater than normal chance of needing costly hospital care. The smokers usually had lung or blood vessel disease. The heavy drinkers had liver or nerve disease. And those who were overweight had heart disease, or diabetes (糖尿病).

A program of physical exercise improves the body’s ability to dissolve or melt dangerous blockages in blood vessels. Such a blockage or blood clot in vessels carrying blood to the heart can cause a heart attack.

The researchers tested 69 persons, both before and after the persons had taken part in a ten- week physical exercise program. The program involved a great deal of physical efforts tretching, walking and running. The scientists found that there was a large increase in each person’s production of clotdissolving (血块溶解) substances after the ten-week exercise program. This was true even in those persons who did not change other habits that increased the dangers of heart attack, such as cigarette smoking.

So we said the study is more evident than physical exercise that can help protect the person’s health. Good physical condition can reduce the chances that a person will die from heart or blood vessel diseases.
