Nearly everyone agrees that money doesn't buy as much as it used to no matter where you want to spend it. This is certainly true of the paper money that passes so quickly through one's hands. Inflation (通货膨胀) eats away at its buying power. But how about coins that seem to do very little except cluttering (杂乱地堆放) up purses and pockets? Unlike notes, metal money becomes more valuable the longer it is held, especially if it is put away where it won't get scratched or worn. Why is this? One reason is that coins, being more durable (耐久的), fall more readily into a category (种类) for collectors. Naturally, the rarer gold pieces must become more valuable as the price of this metal goes up.

But, curiously, one of the rarest coins in the world is not made of gold, but of the relatively cheaper silver. In 1840, the United States mint (造币厂) struck 19,570 silver dollars. That is what its records show. Today only six of this original number remain and these are unlikely ever to reach the auction(拍卖) markets. So what happened to some 19,564 large silver coins, not the easiest sort of things to lose?

One of the more romantic theories is that they were part of the payment to Napoleon for the American territory (领土) then known as Louisiana. But they never reached France. Somewhere in the Gulf of Mexico, the ship transporting them was sunk, either by a storm or by pirates (海盗). The probable answer to the mystery is that they were molted down—since the silver value was greater than the actual value of the coin. What really happened to the rest will probably always remain a mystery. What is known is that whoever can come up with one will find himself instantly rich.

Surprisingly, no one knows how many children receive education in English hospitals, still less the content or quality of that education. Proper records are just not kept.

We know that more than 850,000 children go through hospital each year, and that every child of school age has a legal (合法的) right to continue to receive education while in hospital. We also know there is only one hospital teacher to every 1,000 children in hospital.

Little wonder the latest survey (调查) concludes that the extent and type of hospital teaching available differ a great deal across the country. It found that half the hospitals in English which admit children have no teacher. A further quarter have only a part-time teacher. The special children's hospitals in major (主要的) cities do best; general hospitals in the country and holiday areas are worst off.

From this survey, one can estimate (估计) that fewer than one in five children have some contact with a hospital teacher, and that contact may be as little as two hours a day. Most children interviewed were surprised to find a teacher-they had not been prepared for it by parents or their own school. If there was a teacher they were much more likely to read books and do maths or number work; without a teacher they would only play games.

Reasons for hospital teaching range from preventing a child falling behind and maintaining (保持) the habit of school to keeping a child occupied, and the latter (后者) is often all the teachers can do. The position and influence of many teachers was summed up when referred to them as “the library lady” or just “the helper”.

Children tend to rely on concerned school friends to keep in touch with school work. Several parents spoke of requests for work being ignored or refused by the school. Once back at school, children rarely get extra teaching, and are told to catch up as best as they can. Many short-stay child-patients catch up quickly. But schools do very little to ease (减轻) the anxiety about falling behind expressed by many of the children interviewed.

1.This latest survey found that hospital teaching is provided ________.

[ ]

A.for the whole of the usual school day

B.in every children's hospital in the country

C.for a small proportion of children.

D.by full-time teachers

2.It seemed that the children interviewed in hospital ________.

[ ]

A.liked having maths lessons regularly

B.wanted to play games most of the time

C.did not expect to receive any teaching

D.did not want any contact with their schools

3.It is suggested that most teachers of children in hospital were ________.

[ ]

A.successful in getting the co-operation of parents

B.unable to get help from other hospital staff

C.unable to provide a proper teaching program

D.in a position of great influence in the hospital

4.Some children in hospital are able to keep up with their school work because ________.

[ ]

A.the nurses try to teach them

B.their friends help them to do so

C.teachers from the school come to the hospital

D.their parents bring them books from the library

5.It can be learned from the passage that most children in hospital ________.

[ ]

A.can only lie in bed

B.work very hard to prevent themselves from falling behind

C.could only play games

D.can have some contact with a hospital teacher

James Cleveland Owens was the son of a farmer and the grandson of black slaves. His family moved to Cleveland when he was 9. There, a school teacher asked the youth his name. “J. C. ,” he replied.

She thought he said “Jesse”, and he had a new name.

Owens ran his first race at age 13. After high school, he went to Ohio State University. He had to work part time so as to pay for his education. As a second-year student, in the Big Ten games in 1935, he set even more records than he would in the Olympic Games a year later.

A week before the Big Ten meet, Owens accidentally fell down a flight of stairs. His back hurt so much that he could net exercise all week, and he had to be helped in and out of the car that drove him to the meet. He refused to listen to the suggestions that he give up and said he would try, event by event. He did try, and the results were in the record book.

The stage was set for Owens’ victory at the Olympic games in Berlin the next year, and his success would come to be regarded as not only athletic (体育的) but also political. Hitler did not congratulate any of the African-American winners. “It was all right with me,” he said years later. “I didn't go to Berlin to shake hands with him, anyway.”

Having returned from Berlin, he received no telephone call from the president of his own country, either. In fact, he was not honored by the United States until 1976, four years before his death.

Owens’ Olympic victories made little difference to him. He earned his living by looking after a school playground, and accepted money to race against cars, trucks, motorcycles, and dogs.

“Sure, it bothered (烦恼) me,” he said later. “But at least it was an honest living. I had to eat.”

In time, however, his gold metals (奖牌) changed his life. “They have kept me alive over the years,” he once said. “Time has stood still for me. That golden moment dies hard.”

1.Owens got his other name “Jesse” when ________.

Contacts (交往) between Japan and the rest of the world have grown a great deal in the twentieth century. In the last thirty years, business contacts between Japan and the West have become very important. Many foreign companies (公司) now have offices in Japan and Japanese businessmen do business around the world. Differences between Japanese and Western ways of doing business, however, often confuse (使迷惑不解) foreign businessmen and make doing business in Japan difficult for foreigners.

The American businessman, for example, wants to start talking business immediately. He doesn't want to wait. The Japanese, on the other hand, like to arrive at decisions gradually (逐渐地) after giving them a great deal of thought. Another thing foreign businessmen have difficulty in understanding is when a Japanese means “Yes” or “No”. This is because of cultural differences between Japanese and Western society which make it difficult for a Japanese to say “No” directly.

In English, it is easy to say “No” to something we do not want to do. But in Japan, it's very difficult to say “No”. To refuse an invitation or request with “No”, or a similar (相似的) phrase, is felt to be impolite (不礼貌的). It is thought to be selfish (自私的) and unfriendly. So instead of saying “No” directly, the Japanese have developed many ways to avoid saying “No”. These enable them to avoid hurting other people's feelings. However, this often makes communication with the Japanese difficult for foreigners to understand and follow.

________.

[ ]

B.say a phrase similar to “No”

NEW YORK—America has been experiencing the longest economic increase in its history. Incomes have risen, unemployment has fallen, and cities such as New York are bursting with new office buildings.

But just a short walk from Manhattan's skyscrapers, George Brown sits on the sidewalk, cooking a lunch of rice and bits of fish over a can of cooking fuel. Brown is homeless—one of the 2.3 million people in the US who end up on the street.

During the day, Brown collects aluminum cans and sells them for five cents a piece. At night, he sleeps on the street.

“I have been on the street about eight or nine years, something like that,” said the 62-year-old former construction worker.

Brown admits he's had problems with alcohol and has smoked cocaine. But he said he still wants a more stable (稳定) housing arrangement. He could afford it just with the money he earns by collecting cans and small pieces of metal, if only truly low-income housing were available.

However, he sees no hope of finding affordable housing in New York.

With the strong economy and unemployment down, beautiful housing is being built to meet demand.

A US report shows rents in New York city rose more than 27 per-cent between 1984 and 1999, from US $ 549 to us $ 700 a month.

One of the side effects of the strong economy is that rents have been going up. The majority of people who experience homelessness really just need some affordable housing help.

But few housing companies have been built for the poor. Many small apartments in the city now rent for US $ 1500 a month or more.

Brown, the homeless New Yorker, said he has a daughter who lives in the city but he rarely sees her. She is angry about his drinking and won't allow it in her house.

Smiling, he said he also has seven grandchildren whom he'd like to see more often, “All I've got to do is to clean up my act.” He said.

TAIBEI—Increasing numbers of Taiwanese students are joining the island's “China rush”, seeking education on the Chinese mainland.

According to official Chinese figures, the number of Taiwanese students admitted into college and postgraduate (研究生) programmes on the mainland totalled 461 in 1996, 928 in 1997 and 839 in 1998. Although no latest official numbers were available, Netbig. com said this number had risen between 30 to 50 percent annually in the past two years with well over 1000 entering mainland campuses last year.

The Internet site, based in the Chinese city of Shenzhen, provides education service and information on Chinese main-land colleges and universities. “Many Taiwanese believe a Chinese education giving more knowledge about the people and culture in the mainland will increase their chances in the Chinese job market,”Netbig. com vice-president Ingrid Huang said. “I believe it will give me hands-on experience in the business field in the Chinese mainland and a better understanding of the Chinese mainland people,” said Lydia Chang, a 19-year-old majoring in journalism at Shin Shin University. Chang plans to go on to get a master's degree in business administration in Shanghai, which she says offers the best environment for such studies.

A journalism graduate student, surnamed Lin, at the National Taiwan University said he would like to study law on the Chinese mainland since “there will be better career prospects now that more Taiwanese companies are going there”.

Some business executives were sending their children to study in the Chinese mainland. “They hope the children could build up connections which could later become useful in their business operations,” said Yang Ching-yao, professor of the Chinese mainland studies.

A Netbig. com survey showed the campuses favoured by Taiwan students included Beijing, Qinghua and Renmin universities in Beijing, and Jinan and Zhongshan universities in Guangzhou. The most popular studies were law, business and Chinese medicine.
