Some people take lots of exercise. Others keep to strict diets. But according to recent research, the best way to live a long and happy life is simple. Get a dog.

“We have known for many years that the company(陪伴) of a pet can increase well-being(幸福) in a number of ways,”says Dr. Bonnie Beaver, animal behavior(表现) specialist (专家) at Texas University.“For example, the survival (生存) rates of heart attack victims (受害者) with pets are much greater than those of people without pets.”

According to Dr. Beaver, pet owners are lees likely to need a doctor. They recover more quickly when they do get ill. They have lower blood pressure, take more exercise and are more socially active.

Above all, they are happier. Seventy percent of the families Dr. Beaver surveyed said that their family environment (环境) was happier after they got a pet. And this is what Dr. Beaver and other researchers are trying to achieve. They want to find a scientific link between human happiness and a long life.

There is no final answer to this question yet, but it seems to be something to do with emotional(情感的) ties. People with someone or something to love live longer.“There are many forms of animal-human relationship and some are very helpful,”says Dr. Beaver. It seems that the more lovely an animal is, the more it benefits our health. As the saying goes,“If you want to be loved, get a dog.”

Pet ownership benefits men and women equally. Other life experiences divide the sexes (性别).“Women are more sensitive to bad marriages then their husbands because they work harder at their relationships,”says Dr. Janice Glaser of Ohio State University.

The message seems to be that a woman is better off with a good dog than a bad husband. Yet in some ways, men are similar to dogs. They like getting dirty and making a mess. They forget birthdays. They can disappear for days on end. How can they be better trained?

She was a lovely and pretty girl but now Liu Siying's seriously burnt face and hands tell people that she might never be happy again. On January 23, 2001, the 12-year-old fifth-grade primary school pupil from Central China's Henan Province was taken by her mother to Bei-jing's Tian' anmen Square, believing she would enter“Falun World”. There the two set themselves on fire. She said she was told,“the flames Can't hurt you. They will only pass through your body and you will reach heaven in the twinkling of an eye. Personal computers and the Internet give people new choices about how to spend their time. Some may use this freedom to share less time with certain friends or family members, but new technology will also let them stay in closer touch with those they care most about. I know this from personal experience.

E-mail makes it easy to work at home, where I now spend most weekends and evenings. My working hours aren't necessarily much shorter than they once were but I spend fewer of them at the office. This lets me share more time with my Young daughter than I might have if she'd been born before electronic mail became such a practical tool.

The Internet also makes it easy to share thoughts with a group of friends. Say you do something funny, like seeing a great movie perhaps, and there are four or five friends who might want to hear about it. If you call each one, you may tire of telling the story.

With e-mail, you just write one note about your experience, at your convenience, and address it to all the friends you think might be interested. They can read your message when they have time, and read only as much as they want to. They can reply at their convenience, and you can read what they have to say at your convenience.

E-mail is also an inexpensive way to stay in close touch with people who live far away. More than a few parents use e-mail to keep in touch, even daily touch, with their children off at college.

We just have to keep in mind that computers and the Internet offer another way of staying in touch. They don't eliminate(排除) any of the old ways.

[ ]

A.get in touch with one's friends faster

B.pass on much more information

C.reach a group of people at one time conveniently

D.keep one's communication as personal as possible

3.The use of e-mail has made it possible for the writer to ________.

[ ]

A.have more free time with his child

B.spend less time working

C.work at a speed comfortable to him

D.work at home on weekends

If you walk to the far end of any school courtyard in the UK during the lunch break, you will find several teenagers trying to hide their cigarette smoke from the teachers at the other end.

Teenage smoking is a big problem in the UK, even though it is illegal to smoke before you reach 16 years of age. Children start smoking from as young as 11, and over a quarter of 15-year-olds are regular smokes , according to the Office of National Statistics(统计) or ONS in the UK.

Jonathan Williams, a 15-year-old boy from Hastings on the southeast coast of England, smoking four months ago.“All my friends smoke cigarettes,”he said.“It's easy to buy them because most people my age look 16 anyway. No one can tell the difference between a 15 and 16-year-old.”

Young girls living in the UK are much more likely to smoke than boys. They also smoke more frequently. This is because girls are more likely to“follow the crowd”. They want to feel included .

Jonathan's sister Paula is 17. She tried her first cigarette when she was just 12.“I didn't start smoking regularly until a year ago, because I was afraid of my mum finding out,”She said.“but now I'm over 16. There is nothing she can do, even though she doesn't agree to it.”

Parents, teachers and government are increasingly concerned (关注) about this trend (趋势) . The latest ONS research says that this habit will kill about 1 million of today's teenagers when they reach middle age.

In New Castle in northeast England, the local health expert is working with a secondary school to help teenagers stop smoking. They hold regular“stopping”meeting where students can talk openly about smoking and are given advice about why and how to stop.

Parents and experts are also concerned because there seems to be a relationship between smoking and educational achievement. Most students who pass fewer than five General Certificate of Secondary Education Exams( GCSEs) , which all students must take at the age of 16, are regular smokers. The national average for a good student is nine GCSE passes.

A film was at work at the Circle Five Ranch to film a Marlboro commercial(商业广告). This was in 1868, before they forbad cigarette advertisements from American television. Darrell Winfield was watching the crew(摄制组) set up the equipment. The scene included an actor crossing a river on horseback, but when the time came to shoot, the man was too drunk to ride. Someone from the crew saw Winfield and asked him if he would ride the horse for $ 50.“Hell,”said Winfield, “fur 50 bucks, I'll jump that damn horse over the moon!”

To people in many countries. Winfield is just a familiar but nameless face, a simple cowboy with an advertising message about a connection between the West and brand of cigarettes. Few people know that he is 55 , a family man who's been married to the same woman for 37 years and has 5 children and 7 grandchildren. Most surprisingly, he's a real, working cowboy who raises horses in his ranch in Wyoming.

Increasingly, over the past ten years, people especially young people, have become aware of the need to change their eating habits, because much of the food they eat, particularly processed food, is not good for health. Consequently, there has been a growing interest in natural foods , foods which do not contain chemical additives(添加剂) and which have not been affected by chemical fertilizer (化肥) widely used in farming today.

Natural foods, for example, are vegetables, fruit and grain which have been grown in soil that is rich in organic matter. In simple terms, this means that the soil has been nourished(养育) by unused vegetable matter, which provides it with essential vitamins and minerals. This in itself is a natural process compared with the use of chemicals and fertilizers, the main purpose of which is to increase the amount - but not the quality of foods grown in commercial farming area.

Natural foods also include animals which have been allowed to feed and move freely in healthy pastures (牧场) . Compare this with what happens in the mass production of poultry (家禽) ; there are battery farms, for example, where thousands of chickens live crowded together in one building and feed on food which is little better than rubbish. Chickens kept in this way are not only tasteless as food; they also produce eggs which lack important vitamins.

There are other aspects of healthy eating which are now receiving increasing attention from experts on diet. Take, for example, the question of sugar. This is actually a non-essential food! Although a natural alternative like honey can be used to sweeten food if necessary, we can in fact do without it. It is rat that sugar is harmful in itself. But it does seem to be an additive. The quantity we use has grown steadily over the last two centuries and in Britain today each person consumes an average of 200 pounds a year! Yet all it does is to provide us with energy, in the form of calories. There are no vitamins in it, no minerals and no fibre (纤维).

It is significant that nowadays fibre is considered to be an important part of a healthy diet. In white bread, for example, the fibre has been removed. But it is present in unrefined flour and of course in vegetables. It is interesting to note that in countries where the national diet large quantities of unrefined flour and vegetables, certain diseases are comparatively rare. Therefore the emphasis is placed on the eating of wholemeal(全麦) bread and more vegetables by modern experts on“healthy eating”.

1.People have become more interested in natural foods because ________.

[ ]

A.they care more about their health

B.they want to taste all kinds of foods

C.natural foods are more delicious than processed foods

D.they want to return to nature

2.Soil that is rich in organic matter ________.

[ ]

A.has had chemicals and fertilizers added to it

B.contains vegetable matter that has not been consumed

C.has been nourished by fertilizers

D.already contains large quantities of vitamins and minerals

3.Which of the statements are FALSE about chickens raised in poultry farms?

[ ]

A.They live in very crowded condition.

B.They are allowed to move about and eat freely.

C.They are fed on food that is little better than rubbish.

D.The eggs they produce lack vitamins.

4.Which of the following about sugar is right according to the writer?

[ ]

A.The use d sugar is bad for health.

B.People need sugar to give them energy.

C.Sugar only makes food sweet, but provides us with nothing useful.

[ ]

A.The Importance of Fibre in Foods

B.Harmful Effects of Sugar

C.Natural Foods and a Healthy Diet

D.People's Growing Interest in Natural Foods

Montreal—he may be the world's richestman, but that did not prevent Bill Gates from falling for an April Fool's Day joke by two Quebec radio comics(喜剧演员) pretending to be Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien.

Montreal French-language station CKMF-FM said last Wednesday that staffers (工作人员) Marcantoine Audet and Sebastien Trudel had a 10-minute chat with Microsoft Corp boss Gates on April 1.

“Wash every day and you'll die young, my son!”People often said those words; long ago, of course. Napoleon's wife had new clothes every month, instead of a bath.“It's quicker,”she always said. Rich people did not often have a bath. They washed their hands and faces, but not their bodies. Many poor people did not wash at all. A young man once said to a doctor,“Soap and water have never touched my body.”And the doctor answered,“That's true. I know…”

Why didn't people wash in those days long ago?

Well, they did not have water in their house. They carried water from rivers or from holes in the ground. Townspeople bought it from a water-carrier. Sometimes it was expensive; and soap was always expensive. They drank water, of course; and so they were clean inside. They did not think about the outside! And this is true: they just didn't like a bath!

Modem life is different. We use a lot of soap and water. And we are all quite clean. However, a few people use too much soap; and they often get ill. Who are these people?

Many young women work as hairdressers (理发师) . They wash and then“dress”other women's hair. That's their job, and they like it. Young hairdressers sometimes wash thirty heads on a busy day! their hands are soapy for seven or eight hours; and that's not a good thing. A young hairdresser's hands are often red and ugly; and she must then go to a doctor.

1.People in those days long ago ________.

C.only liked to wash their hands and faces

D.didn't like to wash their bodies at all

I need to get some money, so after Christmas, I took a job in the clothes department at Graham's for the first two weeks of the January sale. I can't say that I enjoyed it, but it was an experience I'll never forget.

I could never understand why there were so many things in the sales; where did they all come from? Now I know the secret! Firstly, there is the special winter stock(货物) and the stock that people buy all the year round; some of these things are slightly reduced. Secondly, there are the summer clothes they couldn't sell last year; these are heavily reduced to clear them. Thirdly, there are cheap clothes bought in specially for the sales; these are put out at high prices ten days before the sale begins and then are reduced by 60% in the sale. Clever! Lastly, they buy in“seconds”, clothes not in perfect condition, for the sale and they are sold very cheaply.

When I arrived half an hour before opening on the first day of the sale, there was already a queue around three sides of building. This made me very nervous.

When the big moment arrived to open the doors, the security guards, looking less confident than usual, came up to them, keys in hand. The moment they had unlocked the doors, they hid behind the doors for protection as the noisy crowd charged in. I couldn't believe my eyes; this wasn't shopping, it was a battlefield! One poor lady couldn't keep her feet and was knocked over by people pushing from behind.

Clothes were flying in all directions as people searched for the sizes, colors and styles they wanted. Quarrels broke out. Mothers were using their small children to crawl (爬行) through people's legs and get hold of things they couldn't get near themselves.

Within minutes I had half a dozen people pushing clothes under my nose, each wanting to be the first served. Where had the famous English queue gone? The whole day continued like that, but I kept my temper (脾气)! I was taking money hand over fist and began to realize why, twice a year, Graham's were happy to turn their expensive store into a battlefield like this.

In the sale fever, people were spending money like water without thinking whether they needed what they were buying. As long as it was a bargain it was OK.

You won't believe this but as soon as I got home I crashed out for four hours. Then I had dinner and went back to bed, fearing the sound of the alarm which would tell me to get ready for the second day of the sale.
