He never takes a vacation from art, for he is unhappy when he isn't working.

If a painting doesn't seem right, he will start over again completely, “No matter how long I've gone on it or how big it is”.

Sometimes in the month of November, a special event happens in the sky that observers may remember for a lifetime. The event is more than a meteor shower(流星雨) . It is a meteor storm .

Meteors are pieces of rock from space that burn up in our atmosphere(大气) . Meteor showers happen when the Earth passes through a large amount of space material during its orbit (按轨道运行) around the sun.

However, thousands of meteors fall during a meteor storm. Some of them may briefly shine brighter than any star in the sky.

The Leonid meteor shower happens every November. In most years, it is not unusual. Leonid meteors fall at an average rate of only fifteen each hour. But every thirty-three years art object passes through our solar system(太阳系) that changes the Leonid meteor shower.

A comet(彗星) is a large body of gas, ice and rock. Comets leave behind these materials as they orbit the sun. Each year around November 18th, the Earth passes through material left behind by a comet called Tempel-Tuttle .

In the February of 1998, comet Tempel-Tuttle returned to the inner solar system. Astronomers(天文学家) have found that the Leonid meteor shower can become very active for about five years after the appearance of that comet.

Astronomers also have discovered that each appearance of comet Tempel-Tuttle leaves behind a different path of material. This discovery has permitted astronomers to know when the Leonid meteor shower may be most intense. Some astronomers believe the Leonids this month may be a meteor storm .

In 1833, observers in the eastern United States saw an intense meteor storm. One person estimated that meteors fell at a rate of ten-thousand an hour above West Point, New York. In 1966, people in the western United States saw another intense Leonid meteor storm.

This year, astronomers believe that there will he two periods of heavy meteor activity starting on November 18th. At Ten Hours Universal Time, observers in North America should see a large number of meteors .

Another period of meteor activity should happen at about Eighteen Hours Universal Time. Observers in East Asia and western Australia will see it best. Astronomers who have researched the Leonids say the best chance to see a meteor storm may he this year and next year.

What do those countries in the world have in common? People are killing each other or driving others out of their families. Why is this hap pening? Very simple, really: in each h of these places, and elsewhere in the world, one group of people believes that another group is different from them and dangerous to them. It has been thus throughout history. How different are humans from each other?

We come in different colors: red, blank, white, yellow and brown; we have a variety of political systems, social systems, religious views(宗教信仰) or none at all; we are different in mind, have different educational systems, different socio-economic classes. We speak different languages, and have different customs and dresses.

If we were to break each of these further, we would have quite a long list of qualities and characteristics that make humans appear to be different from each other. I say they appear to be different , because most of what I have listed stands for what we see or hear, not what is true of human. Man is man everywhere, which is only because where he lives. when he lives there, with whom he lives there, and all have effect on how he lives, that is, what he believes, what he wears, his customs, his gods, his language and so on. These are man-made fact that each group develops over time living together, facing the same problems, needing and desiring the same things. They are his culture. The truth is that we are much more the same than different. If you wear one type of clothing and I wear another, we both wear some kind of clothing. Our culture demands it. If you speak one language and I another, we both speak so that others will understand us. We must communicate with each other. Nothing is gained by giving too many differences, but much lost . If we understood our differences as the ones of culture, then we could make our world more peaceful.

Difference doesn't mean better or worse, right or wrong . It means only that differences have been made by society. Differences produce variety of thought, feeling and action, and that can be very helpful to work out human problems peacefully.

[ ]

A.people are different

D.people are the same in every way except their cultures

2.People in those countries fight each other for ________.

[ ]

A.they have different colors

B.they have different customs and dresses

C.they have different education systems

D.some people think that other people arc different and harmful to them

3.If we pay much attention to differences ________.

[ ]

A.we'll get something

The trees arrived by post, a half-open parcel . They were thin and straight, rather like arrows but with shiny leaves at one end and muddy roots at the other. Terry and his father took them down the garden and planted them in their prepared places . Terry had great hopes of the middle tree, now set in the holy spot where Henry, his cat run over, had been laid to rest a year before. The nine trees made an avenue(大街) down one side of the garden, where there was already a fifteen-foot stone wall between the garden and the backyards of the Jenkins Street houses.

“Why do we want a mw of trees as well as a wall?” Terry asked his father.

His father said, “For privacy(隐私) .These trees grow very thickly. ”

His father's love of privacy often puzzled Terry, who was not one to keep himself to himself, but he could see part of the point here. The houses in Jerkins Street were on higher ground. His friend Leslie lived in number twelve, and Leslie had only to stand on a box to see right over the wall.

“Will the trees grow higher than the wall? ”Terry asked then. “Oh, yes, twice, as high if not more. It'll take a few years but they'll grow.”

So they were going to have nine trees thirty feet tall, to keep them from being overlooked(俯视) . Terry wondered why this was so desirable (值得做的) . He said, “Our garden is very pretty. Why can't we let the people over the wall see it? That wouldn't be showing off, would it?”

“'No, I don't think it would be, ”his father said, “yet some people might feel a bit less happy if they can always see a good thing that is not theirs. We don't want to be the cause of any jealousy(嫉妒) if we can help it.”

This consideration for other people's feelings must be a grown-up thing, Terry thought. It was not his idea of how to run things. He said, “These trees seem a lot of trouble to stop people being jealous of us.”

His father looked at him. “It isn't much trouble, Terry. ”he said. “These trees will grow without help from us. They'll be beautiful. And listen to them. You can already hear them whispering to us in the wind. ”
