I came to live where I am now between Wounded Knee Greek and Grass Greek. Others came too, and we made these little grey house of logs that you see, and they are square. It is a bad way to live, for there can be no power in a square.

You have noticed that everything an Indian does is in a circle, and that is because the Power of the World always works in circles, and everything tries to be round. In the old days when we were a strong and happy people, all our power came to us from the respectful circle of the nation, and so long as the circle was unbroken, the people were getting rich. The flowering tree was the living center of the circle, and the circle of the four quarters nursed it. The east gave peace and light, the south gave warmth, the west gave rain, and the north with its cold and strong wind gave strength and continuous power. This knowledge came to us from the outer world with our belief. Everything the Power of the World does is done in a cirle. The sky is round, and I have heard that the earth is round like a ball, and so are all the stars. The wind, in its greatest power, blows. Birds make their nests in circle, for theirs is the same belief as ours. The sun comes forth and goes down again in a circle. The moon does the same, and both are round. Even the seasons form a great circle in their changing, and always come back again to where they were. The life of a man is a circle from childhood to childhood, and so it is in everything where power moves. Our places were like the rests of birds, and these were always set in a circle, the nation's circle, a nest of marry nests, where the Great Spirit meant for us to nurse our children.

But the Wasichus( Indian word for “white people” ) have put us in these square boxes. Our power is gone and we are dying, for the power is not in us any more. You can look at our boys and see how it is with us. Where we were living by the power of the circle in the way we should, boys were men at twelve or thirteen years of age. But now it takes them very much longer to be full-grown.

Increasingly, over the past ten years, people, especially young people, have become aware of the need to change their habits, because much of the food they eat, particularly processed (加工的) food, is not good for the health. Consequently, there has been a growing interest in natural foods: foods which do not contain additives(添加剂) and which have not been affected by chemical fertilizers widely used in farming today.

Natural foods, for example, are vegetables, fruit and grain which have been grown in soil that is rich in organic matter. In simple terms, this means that the soil has been nourished(提供营养) by unused vegetable matter, which provides it with essential vitamins and minerals. This in itself is a natural process compared with the use of chemicals and fertilizers, the main purpose of which is to increase the amount, but not the quality, of foods grown in commercial farming areas.

Natural foods also include animals which have been allowed to feed and move freely in healthy gassy lands. Comparing this with what happens in the mass production of poultry (家禽) , there are battery farms, for example, where thousands of chickens lived crowded together in one building and are fed on food which is little better than rubbish. Chickens kept in this way are not only tasteless as food, they also produce eggs which lack important vitamins.

There are other aspects of healthy eating which are now receiving increasing attention from experts on diet. It is obvious that nowadays fibre (纤维) is considered to be an important part of a flour and of course in vegetables. It is interesting to note that in countries where the national diet contains large quantities of unrefined flour end vegetables, certain diseases are comparatively rare. Therefore emphasis is placed on the eating of whole meal bread and more vegetables by modern experts on “healthy eating” .

B.using chemical on foods has polluted the soil

[ ]

A.People should eat foods with more fibre.

The anger of PETA has now been turned on KFC, the fried-chicken chain. After two years of failed talks aimed at forcing KFC to introduce more humane(人道的) practices into the raising and killing of chickens, PETA announced last week that it would start a worldwide “Kentucky Fried Cruelty” movement .

PETA wants KFC to kill its chickens using gas rather than cutting their throats, to increase their living space and to provide resting-place for the birds. “KFC has got a lot from chickens but treated them badly, leaving us no choice but to turn up the hest.” said Bruce Friedrich, PETA's director. “McDonald's, Burger King and Wendy's did some-thing under the pressure; KFC would do well to follow their lead.”

It was early in the spring about 15 years ago a day of pale sunlight and trees just began to turn green. I was a young police reporter, driving to a scene I didn't want to see. A man had accidentally backed his pickup truck over his baby granddaughter in the driveway of their home. It was a fatality.

As I parked among police cars and TV news cruisers, I saw a white haired man standing near a pickup. Cameras were trained on him, and reporters were sticking microphones in his face. Looking totally bewildered(困惑的) , he was trying to answer their questions. Mostly he wag only moving his lips, blinking and choking up.

After a white the reporters gave up on him and followed the. police into a small white house. I could still see that old man looking down at the place in the driveway where the child had been.

“I was just backing up there to spread that good dirt. ”he said to me, though I had not asked him anything. “I didn't even know she was outdoors. ”He stretched his hand toward the flower bed, then let it flop to his side.

Entering the kitchen, I came upon the scene. On a table, backlight by a curtained window, lay the tiny body. wrapped in a clear white sheet. Somehow the grandfather had managed to stay away from the crowd. He was sitting on a chair beside the table, in profile (侧面) to me and unaware of my presence, looking at the small body.

In that quiet moment I recognized the making of a prize winning news photograph. I raised the camera.

I don't know how many seconds I stood there, unable to snap that shutter. I was keenly aware of the powerful story telling value that photo would have, and my professional conscience(意识) told me to take it. Yet I couldn't make my hand fire that flashbulb and intrude on the poor man's island of sadness.

In many developing countries, it is difficult to keep food cool. Most areas do not have electricity to operate the devices called refrigerators to keep food coot. Within days, food often spoils or becomes unsafe to eat. This can cause disease and loss of money for farmers. However, in Nigeria, one man is working to change this.

Mohammed Bah Abba, a teacher, invented a cooling device using two round containers made of clay. Mr. Abba's invention is called a Pot-in-Pot Preservation Cooling System. A small pot is placed inside a larger one. The apace between the two pots is filled with wet sand. The inner pot can be filled with fruit, vegetables or drinks. A wet cloth covers the whole cooling system. The device keeps some foods fresh for several weeks.

Food stored in the small pot is kept from spoiling through a simple evaporation process (过程) . Water in the sand between the two pots evaporates through the surface of the larger pot where drier outside air is moving. The evaporation process causes a drop in temperature of several degrees. This cools the inner container and helps destroy harmful bacteria found in food.

Mr. Abby started producing his cooling device in 1997. Since then, he has given mom than 20,000 devices to people in villages in Nigeria. He expects that within five years, people all over the country will be using his invention. Mr. Abba also hopes to export his Pot-in-Pot cooling system to other hot, dry nations facing similar problems.

The Rolex Watch Company of Switzerland has also recognized the value of this cooling system. Two years ago, Mr. Abba received the Rolex Award(奖赏) for Enterprise.
