Japanese students work very hard but many are very unhappy. They feel great pressure from their parents to do well in school and in college. Most students are always being told by their parents to study harder so that they can have a successful future. Although this may be good advice for those students who are very bright, it can have very bad results for many students who are not quick enough at learning.

Unfortunately , a number of students actually kill themselves. Others are after comfort in using drugs. Some students, however, do bad things with groups of bad people and turn to crime(犯罪) . Many of them have tried very hard at school but, in spite of all their effort, have failed in certain examinations and have disappointed their parents. Such students feel that they are less important than everyone else they meet and leave school before they have finished their study.

It is surprising that though most Japanese parents are anxious for their children to do well at school, they do not help them in any way. Many parents feel that they are unable to help their children with their lessons and that it's the teacher's job to help their children.

To make matters worse, a lot of parents send their children to special schools called juku-cram schools .These schools are open during the evenings and on weekends, and their only purpose is to prepare students to pass exams. They do not try to educate students in any real sense of the world. It thus comes as a shock to realize that almost three quarters of the junior high school population attend these cram school.

Ordinary Japanese schools usually have rules about everything from the length of students' hair to their clothes and things in their school bags. Child psychologists(心理学家) now think that such strict rules often lead to a feeling of being unsafe and being unable to fit into society. They regard the rules as being harmful to the development of each student. They believe that no sense of moral values is developed and that students are given neither guidance nor training in becoming good citizens .

The small unframed painting called “Fisherman” was signed by a little-known Italian artist, Maveleone(1669~1740) . When it was sold recently in New York for $ 27,000, the seller, Mr. Oliver Pitt, was asked to explain how the picture had cane into his possession.

Pitt said, “I didn't know it was so valuable. I'm not an art expert. Photography is my hobby. I bought ‘Fisherman ’ in Italy in 1970 for $ 140. The picture wag dirty, and I couldn't see the artist's signature. But anyway it wasn't the picture I liked. I bought it because of the frame. It's a most unusual frame, made of tiny, silvery sea-shell. They are set in such a way that they reflect(反射) perfect light onto the surface of a picture. I now have a photograph of my wife in that frame, and I'll never part with it. ”

“When I returned to New York I showed the painting in its frame to a customs officer. I told him that I had paid E 140 for it but admitted I didn't know its actual worth. The customs man valued it at $ 140 and I was asked to pay duty on that value. I did so, there and then. ”

“Later, I took off the frame, and then uncovered Mavelone's signature. My wife suggested in fun that the painting might be a valuable one, so I cleaned it and put it up for sale. ”

As a result of this explanation, Oliver Pitt had to appear in court. He was charged with knowingly making a false statement of the value of the picture so as to cheat the Customs Department.

Pitt was not happy. “I told the truth as I knew it then. ”he said. “What else could I say?”

And then the judge agreed with him. “The Customs Department is to be responsible,” he said, “for making a true valuation of goods brought into the country, so that the correct amount of duty may be demanded. There are three kinds of goals(目标) : short-term, intermediate and long-term goals. Short-term goals are those that usually deal with present activities. Such goals can be achieved in a week or two, or possibly months . It should be remembered that just as a building is no stronger than its foundation (基础) , our long-team goals cannot be achieved without the achievement of solid short-term goals. Upon completing our short-term goals, we should date the time and then add new short-term goals that will build at those that have been completed.

The intermediate goals build on the foundation of the short-term goals. They might deal with just ate term of school or the entire school years, or they could extend for several years. Any time you move a step at a time, you never allow yourself to become discouraged. As you complete each step, you will have more belief in your ability to grow and succeed.

Long-term goals may be related to our dreams of future. They might cover five years or more. Life is not a static(静态的) thing. We should never allow a long-term goal to limit us or our course of action.

The report came to the British on May 21,1941. The German battleship Bismack, the most powerful warship in the world, was moving out into the Atlantic Ocean. Her task: to destroy the ships carrying supplies from the United States to war-torn England.

The British had feared such a task. No warship they had could match the Bismack in speed or in firepower. The Bismack had eight 15-inch guns and 81 smaller guns. She could move at 30 nautical(航海的) miles an hour. She was believed to be unsinkable.

However, the British had to sink her. They sent out a task force headed by their best battleship Hood to hunt down the Bismack. On May 24, the Hood found the Bismack.

But in the fight, the Bismack was slightly damaged. Her commander decided to run for repairs to France, which at that times had been taken by the Germans. The British force followed her. However, because of Bismack's speed and the heavy fog, they lost sight of her.

For two days every British ship in the Atlantic tried to find the Bismack, but with no success. Finally she was sighted by a plane from Ireland. Trying to slow the Bismack down so that their ships could catch up with her, the British fired at them from the air. It was hit.

In the old days divers used to go down into the sea looking for ships that had sunk, because they hoped to find gold and jewels. Now divers still search for valuable things in ships but they also try to bring to the surface the ships themselves, or parts of them. The value of different kinds of metals has increased greatly over the last twenty or thirty years and even though a ship has been under the sea for many years, it may be worth a great deal.

One famous sunken ship is the “Lusitania”, which sank off the southern coast of Ireland in 1915 with a loss of nearly 1,500 lives. It had four huge propellers made of an expensive metal. Today each of those propellers is worth $ 3,000,000 or more. The ship, lying on the sea-bed, has been bought by a man called John Light. He paid about $12,000 for the whole ship. He hopes to bring up those propellers and sell them. He also hopes to sell other parts of the ship, when he has brought them to the surface, for about $ 6,000,000.

The “Andria Doria” is another valuable ship lying on the sea-bed. It is an Italian passenger ship which sank in 1956 after a collision (互撞) with a Swedish ship. The ship itself is worth at least $ 30,000,000 and in addition she was carrying over $ 4,800,000 in money and many other valuable things. There is one silver object which is worth $ 1,200,000.
