Before the mid-nineteenth century, people in the United States ate most foods only in season. Drying, smoking and salting could keep meat for a short time, but the chance of eating fresh meat and drinking fresh milk was very limited: there was no way to keep food from going bad. But in 1810 a French inventor named Nicolas Appert developed the cooking-and-sealing technique of canning. And in the 1850's, an American named Gail Borden developed a means of keeping milk fresh. Canned foods and condensed milk (炼乳) became more common during the 1860's, but supplies remained low because cans had to be made by hand. By 1880, however, inventors had developed modern machines that mass-produced cans from tin-plate. Suddenly all kinds of food could be kept and bought at all times of the year.

Other inventions had also helped make it possible for Americans to change their daily diets. Growing populations increased food demand, and stimulated fruit and vegetable farmers to raise more produce . Railroad refrigerator cars made it possible to ship growers and packed meat fresh to faraway places without worrying they would go bad. Thus, by the 1890's northern city settlers could enjoy southern and western strawberries, grapes, and tomatoes, for a month at most in the past, for up to six months of the year. Besides, increased use of iceboxes made it possible for families to store food which could easily go bad. An easy means of producing ice had been invented in the 1870's, and by 1900 the nation had more than two thousand ice plants, most of which made home deliveries. The icebox became common equipment in most homes and remained so until the refrigerator replaced it in the 1920 's and 1930's. Almost everyone now has a variety of diet.

Personal computers and the Internet give people new choices about how to spend their time.

Sane may use this freedom to share lees time with certain friends or family members, but new technology will also let them stay in closer touch with those they cane most about. I know this from personal experience.

E-mail makes it easy to work at home, which is where I now spend most weekends and evenings . My working hours aren't necessarily much shorter than they once were but I spend fewer of them at the office . This lets me share more time with my young daughter than I might have if she'd been born before electronic mail became such a practical tool .

The Internet also makes it easy to share thoughts with a group of friends . Say you do something fun, see a great movie perhaps—and there are four or five friends who might want to hear about it. If you call each one, yon may tire of telling the story. With E-mail, you just write one note about your experience, at your convenience, and address it to all the friends you think might be interested. They can read your message when they have time, and read only as much as they want to. They can reply at their convenience, and you can read what they have to say at your convenience.

E-mail is also an inexpensive way to stay in close touch with people who live far away. More than a few parents use E-mail to keep in touch, even daily touch, with their children off at college.

We just have to keep in mind that computers and the Internet offer another way of staying in touch. They don't take the place of any of the old ways.

Most Americans get what money they have from their work, that is, they earn an income from wages or salaries. The richest Americans, however, get most of their money from what they own—their stock, bonds, real estate, and other forms of property, or wealth. Although there are few accurate(具体的) statistics to go by, wealth in American society appears to be concentrated in very few hands. More than 20 percent of everything that can be privately owned is held by less than one percent of the adult population and more than 75 percent of all wealth is owned by 20 percent of American adults. The plain fact is that most Americans have no wealth at all aside from their homes, automobiles, and a small amount of savings. Income in the Unites States is not as highly concentrated as wealth. In L917 the richest 10 percent of American families received 26.1 percent of all income, while the poorest 10 percent received 17 percent, mainly from Social Security and other government payments. The most striking aspect of income distribution(分布) is that it has not changed significantly since the end of World War Ⅱ. Although economic growth has roughly doubled real disposable (可自由使用的) family income(the money left after taxes and adjusted for inflation) over the last generation, the size of the shares given to the rich and the poor is about the same. By any measure economic inequality is great in the United States.

The reality behind these statistics is that a large number of Americans are poor. In 1918, 14 percent of the population was living below the federal government's poverty line, which at that time was an annual income of $ 9,287 for a nonfarm family of two adults and two children. In other words, about one out of seven Americans over 31 million people was officially considered unable to buy the basic necessities of food, clothes, and shelter. The suggested poverty line in 1981 would have been an income of about $ 11,200 for a family of four. By this relative definition, about 20 percent of the population or more than 45 million Americans are poor.

1.What does the majority of the Americans have in terms of wealth?

[ ]

A.Their income and savings.

B.Everything they own in their homes.

C.Actually, they have no wealth at all.

D.Their house, cars and small amounts of savings.

2.What is the percentage of wealth that is in the hands of most Americans?

[ ]

A.More than 25%.

B.Less than 25% .

C.More than 75 % .

D.Less than 20 % .

3.Why is economic inequality still great in the US in spite of the economic growth?

[ ]

A.Because the proportion of income received by the rich and the poor remains almost the same as in 1917.

B.Because the economic growth has widened the gap of the family income between the rich and the poor.

C.Because income in the US is still concentrated in the hands of the richest 10% of American families.

D.Because some Americans made great fortunes during the Second World War.

4.What can we learn from comparison of the taro poverty lines in the last paragraph?

[ ]

A.The poverty line of 1918 is more favorable to the poor than that of 1981.

B.The 1981 line didn't leave much to the poor.

C.There were more Americans who were officially poor by the 1981 line.

D.There were more Americans who were officially poor by the 1918 line.

The old advertising slogan, “So simple a child can do it”, has taken on new meaning for me. A few weeks ago I got a computer, but I am mechanically illiterate(文盲) . I knew that children had no fear of the future, so that seemed a good place to seek help. I asked my nephew, twelve years old, at an elementary school, to help me.

My nephew took the machine for granted and has simply accepted the fact that computers are now a way of life. He plays with them and does his homework on them and even creates programs for them. I, on the other hand, am terrified by what this equipment can do. It can interchange paragraphs, switch words around and even correct my spelling. It informs me of its limitations, takes commands and asks questions. It even seems to have a sense of communication. Rather than accusing me of making an error, it prints “One of us has made a mistake! ”It never gets tired and is always patient and ready to go when I am.

I think it was somewhat normal for me to be suspicious of computers .They represent a break with some very familiar habits and traditions . It is only human to instinctively (本能地) avoid anything that shifts thoroughly from the acceptable, comfortable past. But the world is governed by ceaseless change and we must therefore establish links with the present and future as well as the peat. Computer technology is an excellent case in point, as the newest systems grow out of date in only a few years, or even months.

This ability to see, experience and accept the new is one of our saving characteristics (特征) . To be fearful of tomorrow, to close ourselves to possibilities, to resist the inevitable, to advocate (倡导) standing still when all else are moving forward, is to lose touch. If we accept the new with joy and wonder, we can move gracefully into each tomorrow. More often than not, our children shall lead us.

1.What is the new meaning of “So simple a child can do it”for the author?

[ ]

A.Computers are so easy to operate that even a child can play them well.

B.A child can always do more complex things than an adult.

C.It is easier for a child to accept new things than for an adult.

D.A child has greater ability than an adult in operating computers.

2.Which of the following statements is true according to the second paragraph?

[ ]

A.The nephew believed that machines were made for people to do whatever they wanted.

B.The nephew thought it was just natural to accept computers as a way of life.

C.Computers are not only used for communication, but to remove their limitations.

D.It is a fact that both adults and children have taken computers for granted.

3.What does the author's computer NOT do among the following?

[ ]

A.It takes commands and ask questions.

B.It tells the author that everyone has his own limitations.

C.It corrects the author's spelling mistakes.

D.It informs the author of his mistakes.

4.According to the third paragraph, it is human that we resist these things which ________.

[ ]

A.establish links with the present and future as well as the past

B.grow out of date in only a few years, or even months

C.represent some familiar habits and traditions

D.change completely from the acceptable and comfortable past

5.According to the author, we'll fall behind the times if we ________.

[ ]

A.are fearful of tomorrow and resist the inevitable

B.are unable to see, experience and accept the new

C.insist on standing still when all else are moving forward

D.all of the above

The bat expert I called was even more active than Patrick. “I think you've got a large number there.” he said in wonder. “I've been trying to attract bats to our house for 25 years. A single bat eats up his weight in mosquitoes and black flies three times every night. You're a very lucky man.”

I offered to share my luck with him. He could take them away. “Bats have a remarkable homing instinct(本能) .”he said. “They'd fly straight back even if I transported them 100 miles. Once they have settled, you can't stop them from coming back. ”I was silent. Finally we managed to rent(出租) the house to a young family, who were also interested in buying it. “What about the bats?” I said to Patrick.

The greatest recent changes have been in the lives of women. During the twentieth century there was an unusual shortening of the time of a woman's life spent in caring for children. A woman marrying at the end of the 19th century would probably have been in her middle twenties, and would be likely to have seven or eight children, of whom four or five lived till they were five years old. By the time the youngest was fifteen, the mother would have been in her early fifties and would expect to live a further twenty years, during which customs, chance and health made it unusual for her to get paid work. Today women marry younger and have fewer children. Usually a women's youngest child will be fifteen when she is forty-five and is likely to take paid work until retirement et sixty. Even while she has the care of children, her work is lightened by household appliances(家用电器) and convenience foods.

This important change in women's way of life has only recently begun to have its full effect on women's economic position. Even a few years ago most girls left school at the first opportunity and most of them took a full-time job. However, when they married, they usually left work at once and never returned to it. Today the school-leaving age is sixteen, marry girls stay at school after that age, and though women tend to marry younger, more married women stay at work at least until shortly before their first child is born. Many more afterward return to full or part-time work. Such changes have led to a new relationship in marriage, with both husband and wife accepting a greater share of the duties and satisfaction of family life, and with both husband and wife sharing more equally in providing the money and running the home, according to the abilities and interest of each of them.
