A new study reported in a medical magazine concludes that even smokers who reach their 70s are likely to live longer if they stop smoking. Researchers say that they have got some of the strongest evidence(证据)that it's never too late to stop smoking.

The study was based on a five - year follow - up of 7, 178 people over the age of 65 who lived in Boston, New Haven and Washington counties. The report showed former smokers ran about the same risk (危险) of death from heart disease as those who never smoked. Women who stopped smoking faced about the same cancer - death risk as those who never smoked, but men who gave up smoking still had a 50% higher risk. The men's extra(额外) risk of cancer largely disappeared if they had not smoked for more than 20 years.

The discovery does not agree with the widely-known belief that by the time smokers reach old age, their habit has already hurt them, and those who continue to live healthily are probably immune (免疫) to the dangers of cigarettes.

A.it's useless for young people to stop smoking

C.they kept on medically examining many old people in cities, towns and villages for a period of 5 years

D.they kept on following smokers and non - smokers over the age of 65 for 5 yeas

3.A former smoker is a person who ________.

[ ]

A.smokes a lot

B.used to smoke

C.smokes once in a while

D.is going to give up smoking

[ ]

A.Those who stop smoking are facing the same risk of death from cancer as non - smokers.

B.Those who stop smoking are facing the same risk of death from heart trouble as non - smokers .

C.Women who stop smoking face about the same cancer- death risk as nonsmokers.

D.Men who stop smoking face about the same cancer - death risk as men who gave up smoking 20 years ago.

5.Which of the following is with the same meaning as the sentence “the discovery does not agree with the widely - known belief ”?

[ ]

A.The discovery is in accordance with the widely -known belief.

B.The discovery is against the widely - known facts.

Some teachers want to keep boys and girls apart, but not all do. 70 years ago a mixed class of Dutch teenagers had to play a sport together. Their schoolmaster didn't think any of the usual sports was right for them. He wanted to find a sport that was as good for one sex as for the other. During a visit to Sweden he saw some children playing a game together. This gave him an idea for a new sport. He called it “korfball”, from the Dutch word for basket, “korf” . Korfball is an entirely different game from basketball.

The sport is played like this. The pitch is the size of a small foot ball field. It has three divisions, which are called attack, center and defence. Each team has 12 players, four in each division. The number of men and women. is always the same. The ball is a size 5 football . The goal is a basket three meters above the ground at each end of the pitch. When a player has the ball he is not allowed to run. He must throw the ball, not kick it. The ball must always go to a center player between defence and attack. Men are only allowed to mark men, and women mark women. The sport is simple, and excellent for mixed schools. Korfball is now played in 10 countries, and it is a pity that the sport is not better known. When someone says he plays korfball the usual answer is, “What did you say you play?”

You need to write a letter now and then. To be known by another person-to meet and talk freely on the page----to be close despite (尽管)distance. To express the music of your souls.

The first step in writing a letter is to forget guilt (负罪感) of not writing. You don't “owe” anybody a letter. Letters are a gift. Sit for a few minutes with the paper in front of you, and let your friend come to mind. Remember the last time you saw each other and how your friend looked and what you said and what was perhaps unsaid between. When your friend becomes real to you, start to write.

Write the solution (称呼) - Dear you - and take a deep breath and plunge in (投入). A simple sentence will do, followed by another. As if you were talking to us. Don't think about grammar, don't worry about form, just give us your news. When you come to the end of one paragraph, just start a new one.

Don't tear up the paper and start over again when you write a bad line-try to write your way out of it. Whatever is in your mind, let it find a way to the page. When you come to the end write “Yours ever” or “Hugs and kisses”.

You'd better get everything ready in a drawer (抽屉) , such as envelopes , address books and so on, so you can write fast when the pen is hot.

Ask three people to look out the same window at a busy street corner and tell you what they see. Chances that you will receive three different answers. Each person sees the same scene, but each perceives (感知)something different about it.

Perceiving goes on in our minds. Of the three people who look out the window. One may say that he sees a policeman giving a motorist a ticket. Another may say that he sees a rush-hour traffic jam (拥挤) at the crossing. The third may tell you that he sees a woman trying to cross the street with four children in tow (牵着). For perception is the mind's explanation of what the senses-in this case our eyes-tell us.

Many psychologists (心理学家) today are working to try to determine just how a person experiences or perceives the world around him. Using a scientific method, these psychologists set up experiments in which they can control all of the factors. By measuring and charting(用图表示) the results of many experiments, they are trying to find out what makes different people perceive totally different things about the same scene.

The Atlantic Ocean (大西洋) is one of the oceans that separate the Old World from the New. For centuries it kept the Americas from being discovered by the people of Europe.

The Atlantic Ocean is only half as big as the Pacific, but it is still very large. It is more than 4000 miles (6400km) wide where Columbus crossed it. Even at the narrowest it is about 2000 miles wide.

Two things make the Atlantic Ocean rather unusual. For so large an ocean it has very few islands. Also , it is the world's saltiest ocean.

There is so much water in the Atlantic that it is hard to imagine how much there is. But suppose no more rain fell into it and no more water was brought to it by rivers. It would take the ocean about 4000 years to dry up. In most places the water is a little more than two miles deep, but in some places it is much deeper. The deepest spot measures 30 246 feet----almost six miles.

Ocean currents (洋流) are sometimes called “rivers in the sea ”. One of these “rivers ” in the Atlantic is called the Gulf Stream (墨西哥湾流). It is a current of warm water. Another is the Labrador Current----cold water coming down from the Arctic (北冰洋). Ocean currents affects(影响)the weather of the land near which they flow.

The Atlantic supplies much food for the people on its shores. There are a lot of fishing areas there.

Today the Atlantic is a great highway (交通干线). It is not, however, always a smooth and safe one. We now have such fast ways of travelling that this big ocean seems to have grown smaller. Columbus sailed for more than two months to cross it. A fast modern steamship can make the trip in less than four days. Planes fly from New York to London in only eight hours and from South America to Africa in four!
