Many American presidents in the 19th century were from poor families. They spent their childhood in little wooden rooms. They got little education. Washington and Lincoln, for example, never went to school and they taught themselves. Lincoln once did jobs of a worker, shopkeeper and post-master in his early years.

Grant was a general in the American Civil War and Eisehower was a hero in the Second World War. It happened they graduated from the same school-West Point Military Academy (西点军校). One may be surprised to learn that neither of them did well in the school. Eisenhower, for example, was once fined because he broke the rules of the school.

The history of slavery is a very sad story. Beginning in 1619, the first slaves came to America from Africa. In the South, there were big tobacco and cotton plantation (种植园). The plantation owners bought slaves like animals to work for them. Slaves picked cotton in the fields. They worked in the houses. They could not leave the plantations. Mrs. Harriet Beecher Stowe published her book Uncle Tom's Cabin in 1852. It reminded people that Negroes were human beings and that slavery could and often did lead to inhuman treatment, including the breaking up of families whose members might be sold to different owners. The book was strongly emotional (情感的), and few books ever published have had so great an exercise of such power. Anger in the north against southern slavery became stronger and stronger, though the south continued to refuse to consider bringing it to an end. Soon it became clear that the north could not allow the continuation of slavery within the United sates. The Civil War was fought over the claim by the southern states to the right to withdraw from the Union and form a separate nation where slavery would continue; for the north the war was a just one in support not only of the maintenance (维持) of national unity, but also of the unity of a nation from which the shame of legal slavery should be done away with.

It was during a weekend. Mum gave me two tickets for a film and told me she was too busy with the endless housework to go with me. She told me to keep the money if I could sell the extra ticket. I was very happy, of course. At that time, a ticket only cost 20 fen. But to me, a little girl of 12,20 fen seemed quite a lot.

I reached the cinema in a great hurry. Holding the ticket in my hand, I began to look for a buyer. A handsome young man noticed me and the ticket in my hand. He came towards me with a big smile, “You've got an extra ticket?”

  “Yes,” I nodded.

  “That's great. Say, how much?”

  “Twenty fen.”

“Oh”, he thought for a while and then, took out a ten-yuan note from his wallet. “I'm sorry, but I have only got this note,” Seeing I was confused, he added. “Then, how about waiting for a while and I'll give you the money after I have changed it in the cinema's store?”

Without much thinking, I agreed. Then we went to the cinema together. He walked fast. I could hardly keep up with him. By and by, he left me farther and farther behind. Now, we're always bearing about accidents, and when we're in a car we try to drive carefully, but how many of us take the same degree of care in our homes? Any large hospital will tell you the number of accidents that happen in the home is almost the same as those on the road. I don't pretend to be an expert, but I've thought a lot about how and why these accidents happen and what we can do to prevent them.

One of the commonest and most dangerous causes of home accidents is wrong and careless use of electrical equipment (设备). People will continue to use a loose plug (插头) or pull out a plug without first turning off the power. In spite of warnings, one will carry an electric heater (电炉) into the bathroom when he is going to have a bath. Sometimes one forgets to cut off the power before mending a lamp or something else. All this will cause accidents. So the rule about anything that works by electricity is: Switch off before you touch anything and don't pretend you know when you actually don't.

If you've got children in the house, it's always best to keep medicines of any kind out of their reach. Otherwise, they may be taken for candies or a new kind of drink. When there are older people living with you, you have to take particular care in a number of ways in order to make them safe and happy.

Fire, of course, is always a risk. So, remember not to dry clothes in front of fires; or leave stoves in the middle of rooms where they can easily be knocked over. And don't forget to keep the children away from fire. Smoking, too, may cause fire. So you'd better give it up.

Safety first may mean a little more time and care, but it may save you a lot of trouble.

A.leave stoves in the middle of the rooms

B.dry clothes near stoves

One day Burton took his children to the zoo. He told them to be ready at two o'clock, but they weren't all ready then: little Tommy couldn't find his shoes. He could find his brown shoes, but he couldn't find his black shoes, and wanted to wear his black shoes to the zoo. At a quarter past two his brothers and sisters told him to wear his brown shoes. I felt encouraged by his words and began to swim more calmly. But my clothes stuck to me like a heavy weight. I could hardly stay above the surface.

  Counsel saw this.“Shall I cut them?”he asked.

With a knife he cut my clothes from top to bottom and took off quickly while I swam for both of us.

Then I did the same for Counsel, and we continued to swim near each other.

But we were in serious trouble. The crew might not have noticed our disappearance. And if they had, they could not return because the rudder(舵) had broken. Counsel thought of all this, and calmly made his plans. We decided to wait for the ship as long as possible, because we had no other hope of safety. I suggested that we save our strength so that both of us would not be tired out at the same time. This was how we did it: While one of us lay on his back, quite still, with arms crossed and legs stretched out(伸直), the other would swim and push him along. We changed every ten minutes or so. In this way we could swim for hours, perhaps till daylight. The crash(破裂声) of the ship and the whale (鲸) had appeared at about eleven o'clock. We had about eight hours to swim before daylight. This seemed possible, if the sea remained calm.
