In Kansas City, Missouri, a computer helps firemen. The computer contains information about everyone of the 350 000 street addresses in the city. When firemen answer a call, the computer gives them important information about the burning building. The computer can give the location of the building and its size, type, and contents. In fact, the computer system has many different ways of helping fire fighters with their problems. For example, it can give medical information about sick people living in a burning builing. With this information, the fire men can take special care to find these sick persons and remove them quickly and safely from the burning building.

The speed of the computer is amazing. Within two or three seconds after a call is received, the computer provides necessary information for the firemen. The information it then sent to them by radio from the computer center in City Hall.

The Kansas City computer system also contains medical record of each of the city's 900 firemen. This kind of information is especially useful when a fire fighter is injured. With this medical information, doctors at the hospital can treat the injured firemen more quickly and easily.

Kansas City firemen themselves are thankful for the computer's help. The computer tells them about possible dangers ahead and helps them prepare for them. Many times the computer information helps to save lives and property. Sometimes the lives are those of firemen themselves!

Marlin Perkins' keen interest in animals, especially snakes, brought him a lot of trouble when he was young. His landlady never excused him for keeping snakes in his closet. After two years of college, he left school and found a job in a zoo, sweeping the sidewalks for 3 .50 a day. He was very happy about it because he could now watch animals and study them all day long. He keeps daily records on all the baby animals, takes their temperature and watches their diet (饮食)strictly. During Hitler's time, things became worse. Hitler had divided human beings into three classes , and regarded the Jewry as the lowest one. He believed that under the same condition, a lower race would develop more quickly on its number, and grow up like parasites (寄生虫).

Mr Denys Stocks, an old policeman, has just been given a prize for 12 years' research into ancient Egyptian industrial methods. People often wondered how the Egyptians were able to cut such hard stone and how they produced such fine jewellery. Mr Stocks has shown that the Egyptians used saws (锯) and drills (钻). The saws and drills were made of copper (铜), which is very soft. But the Egyptains turned them into very powerful tools. First, an Egyptian made a cut in the stone with a soft saw. Then the Egyptian put some sand into the cut. The hard sand got into the teeth of the saw and did the cutting. In this way, a worker could cut one of the hardest rocks.
