The problem of names and faces was put to experimental test in people to be studied in 1934 by an American scientist, H. M. Clarke. He showed his subjects a page with photographs of the faces of twelve men and, under each photograph, there was a name. The subjects were given three minutes to study these names and faces by whatever method they would usually use in learning the names of real people.

Three minutes later, remembering was tested in four different ways. The original names had to be recognized when mixed up with a number of “new” names; the original faces had to be recognized from “new” faces; the original faces were shown and the suitable names had to be recalled; and the original names were shown and the corresponding(相应的)faces recalled.

Nearly 500 college students acted as subjects in this experiment and the results were clear. It was easier to recognize names than to recall them; but it was as easy to recognize names as to recognize faces. If either names or faces were to be recalled, the remembering performance(表现) was not as good as that of recognition. Thus, from the examples given above, the difference between recalling and recognition should be clear.

There are a great many professions(职业) on specialization(专业化). You find these professions in engineering, in production and in teaching. But there is an increasing demand for people who are able to take in a great area, people who perhaps do not know too much about any one field. There is, in other words, a demand for people who are able to see the forest rather than the trees, and able to make general judgment. We can call these people “generalists(通才,全才)”. And these “generalists” are particularly needed for positions in government, where it is their jab to see that other people do the work, where they have to plan for other people, to organize other people's work, to begin it and judge it. The specialist(专业人才) understands one field: his concern(兴趣) is with technique and tools. He is a “trained” man. The generalist-and especially the administrator(管理者)-deals with people: his concern is with leadership, with planning, and with direction giving. He is an “educated” man. Very rarely is a specialist able to be an administrator, It is your work to find out, during your training period, into which of the two kinds of jobs you fit.

Your first job may turn out to be the right job for you. Certainly you should not change jobs constantly. At the same time you must not look upon the first job as the final job; it is a training job, an opportunity to understand yourself and your fitness for being a worker.

1.There is an increasing demand for ________.

[ ]

A.specialists
B.trained people
C.generalists
D.different workers

2.The specialist is ________.

B.a man who has been trained in more than one field

C.a man who is an expert in his field

D.a man whose job is to train other people

3.The generalist is ________.

[ ]

A.a man who is good at organizing other people's work

B.a man who is an “educated” specialist

C.a man who is very strong in society

D.a man who understands more than one field and able to make general judgement

4.During your training period, it is important ________.

[ ]

A.to choose a job that is very easy to be dome

B.to decide whether you are fit to be a specialist or a generalist

C.to find an organization which fits you

D.to try to be a generalist

5.A man's first job ________.

[ ]

A.is never the right job for him

B.is an opportunity to fit himself for his leadership

C.should not be changed

D.should not be regarded as his final job

Some people believe, that international sport bring about good will between the nations and that if countries play games together they will learn to live together. Others say that international contests encourage false national pride and lead to misunderstanding and hatred. There is probably some truth in both arguments, but in recent years the Olympic Games have done little to support the view that sports encourage international brotherhood. Not only was there the terrible incident including the murder of athletes, but the Games were also ruined by small incidents caused by less important national contests.

One country received its second-place, medals with anger after the hockey(曲棍球) final. There had been noisy scenes at the end of the hockey match, the losers against the final decisions. They believed that one of their goals should not have been disallowed and that their opponents'(对手) victory was unfair. Their manager was very angry when he said:“This wasn't hockey. Hockey and the International Hockey Federation are finished.”The American basketball team announced that they would not give up first place to Russia, after a disputable(可争议的) end to their contest. The game had ended in disorder. It was thought at first that the United States had won, by a single point, but it was announced that there were three seconds still to play. A Russian player then threw the ball from one end of the court to the other, and another player popped it into the basket. It was the first time the USA had ever lost an Olympic basketball match. An appeal jury(评判委员会) debated the matter for four and a half hours before announcing that the result would stand. The American players then voted not to receive the silver medals.

Incidents of this kind will continue as long as sport is played competitively rather than for the love of the game. The suggestion that athletes should compete as individuals(个人), or in non-national teams might be too much to hope for. But in the present organisation of the Olympics there is far too much that encourages aggressive patriotism(爱国主义).

1.What did the manager mean by saying “… Hockey and the International Hockey Federation are finished?”

[ ]

A.His team would no longer take part in international games.

B.Hockey and the Federation are both ruined by the unfair decisions.

C.There should be no more hockey matches organized by the Federation.

D.The Federation should be broken up as soon as possible.

2.The basketball example implied that ________.

[ ]

A.too much patriotism was shown in the incident

B.the announcement to make the match longer was wrong

C.the appeal jury spent too much time in making the decision

D.the American team was right in refusing to accept the silver medals

3.The author gives the two examples in Paragraphs 2 and 3 to show ________.

[ ]

A.how national pride led to undesirable incidents in international games

B.that sportsmen love their country more than they used to

C.that competitiveness in the games discourages international friendship

D.that it is right for athletes to play competitively

4.What conclusion can be drawn from the passage?

[ ]

A.The organisation of the Olympic Games must be improved.

B.Athletes should compete as individuals in the Olympic Games.

C.Sport should be played competitively rather than for the love of the game.

D.International contests bring about misunderstanding between nations.

Man-made flowers are used for scientific as well as for decorative(装饰的) purposes. They, are made from a variety of materials, such as wax and glass, so skillfully that they can hardly be recognised from natural flowers. In making such models, painstaking skill and imagination are called for, as well as thorough knowledge of plant structure(构造). If US software(软件) companies don't pay more attention to quality, they could kiss their business good-bye. Both India and Brazil are developing a world-class software industry. Their weapon is quality and one of their jobs is to attract the top US quality specialists whose voices are not listened to in their own country.

Already, of the world's 12 software houses that have earned the highest position in the world, seven are in India. That's largely because they have used new methods American software specialists refused to use. For example, for years, quality specialists, W. Edwards Deming and J. M. Juran had tried to persuade US software companies to change their attitudes to quality. But their quality call mainly fell on deaf ears in the US-but not in Japan. By the 1970s and 1980s, Japan was taking its market share with better, cheaper products. They used Deming's and Juran's ideas to bring down the cost of good quality to as little as 5% of total production costs. In US factories, the cost of quality then was 10 times as high: 50% In software, it still is.

Watts S. Humphrey spent 27 years at IBM heading up software production and then quality assurance(保证). But his advice was seldom paid attention to. He retired from IBM in 1986. In 1987, he worked out a system for assessing(评估) and improving software quality. It has proved its value time and again. For example, in 1990 the cost of quality at Raytheon Electronics Systems was almost 60% of total software production costs. It fell to 15% in 1996 and has since further dropped to below 10%.

Like Deming and Juran, Humphrey seems to be winning more praises overseas than at home. The Indian government and several companies have just founded the Watts Humphrey Software Quality Institute at the Software Technology Park in Chennai, India.

Let's hope that US lead in software will not be eaten up by its quality problems.

1.Which country has the most first-class software companies in the world?

[ ]

A.Germany.
B.The USA.
C.Brazil.
D.India.

2.Which of the following statements about Humphrey is true?

[ ]

A.He is now still an IBM employer.

B.He has worked for IBM for 37 years.

C.The US pays much attention to his quality advice.

D.India honors him highly.

3.By what means did Japan take its large market share by the 1970s and the 1980s?

[ ]

A.Its products were cheaper in price and better in quality.

B.Its advertising was most successful.

C.The US hardware industry was falling behind.

D.Japan hired a lot of Indian software specialists.

4.What is the writer worrying about?

[ ]

A.Many US software specialists are working for Japan.

B.The quality problem has become a worldwide problem.

C.The US will lose its lead in software in the world.

D.India and Japan are joining hands to compete with the US.

People living on part of the south coast of England face a serious problem. In 1993, the owners of a large hotel and of several houses discovered, to their horror, that their gardens had disappeared overnight. The sea had eaten into the soft limestone cliffs on which they had been built. While experts were studying the problem, the hotel and several houses disappeared altogether, sliding down the cliff and into the sea.

Erosion(侵蚀) of the white cliffs along the south coast of England has always been a problem but it has become more serious in recent years. Dozens of homes have had to be abandoned as the sea has crept farther and farther inland. Experts have studied the areas most affected and have drawn up a map for local people, forecasting the year in which their homes will be swallowed up by the hungry sea.

Angry owners have called on the Government to build sea defenses to protect their homes. Government surveyors have pointed out that in most cases, this is impossible. New sea walls would cost hundreds of millions of pounds and would merely make the waves and currents go further along the coast, shifting the problem from one area to another. The danger is likely to continue, they say, until the waves reach an inland area of hard rock which will not be eaten as limestone is. Meanwhile, if you want to buy a cheap house with an uncertain future, apply to a house agent in one of the threatened areas on the south coast of England. You can get a house for a knockdown price but it may turn out to be a knockdown home.

1.What is the cause of the problem that people living on part of the south coast of England face?

3.The experts' study on the problem of erosion can ________.

[ ]

A.warn people whose homes are in danger

B.provide an effective way to slow it down

C.help to find its eventual solution

D.lead to its eventual solution

4.It is not practical to build sea defenses to protect against erosion because ________.

[ ]

A.house agents along the coast do not support the idea

B.it is too costly and will endanger neighboring areas

C.the government is too slow in taking action

D.they will be easily knocked down by waves and currents

5.According to the author, when buying a house along the south coast of England, people should ________.

[ ]

A.take the quality of the house into consideration

B.guard against being cheated by the house agent

C.examine the house carefully before making a decision

D.be aware of the possible danger involved

We spent a day in the country picking wild flowers. With the car full of flowers we were going home. On our way back my wife noticed a cupboard outside a furniture shop. It was tall and narrow.“Buy it,” my wife said at once. “We'll carry it home on the roof rack. I've always wanted one like that.

What could I do? Ten minutes later I was $ 20 poorer; and the cupboard was tied on to the roof rack. It was six feet long and eighteen inches square, quite heavy too.

In the gathering darkness I drove slowly. Other drivers seemed unusually polite that evening. The police even stopped traffic to let us through. Carrying furniture was a good idea.

After a time my wife said, “There's a 1ong line of cars behind. Why don't they overtake, I wonder?”

In fact a police car did overtake. The two officers in side looked at us seriously as they passed. But then, with great kindness they led us through the rush-hour traffic. The police car stopped at our village church. One of the officers came to me.

“Right, sir,” he said.“Do you need any more help?”

I was a bit puzzled.“Thanks, officer,” I said. “You have been very kind. I live just on the road.”

He was staring at our car, first at the flowers then at the cupboard “Well, well,”he said, laughing. “It's a cupboard you've got there! We thought it was something else.”
