Every artist knows in his heart that he is saying something to the public. Not only does he want to say it well, but he wants it to be something which has not been said before. He hopes the public will listen and understand he wants to teach them, and he wants them to learn from him.

What visual artists like painters want to teach is easy to make out but difficult to explain, because painters translate their experiences into shapes and colors, not words. They seem to feel that a certain selection of shapes and colors, out of the countless billions possible, is exceptionally interesting for them and worth showing to us. Without their work we should never have noticed these particular shapes and colors, or have felt the delight which they brought to the artist.

Most artists take their shapes and colors from the world of nature and from human bodies in motion and repose (运动与静止); their choices show that these aspects of the world are worth looking at, that they contain beautiful sights. Contemporary artists might say that they merely choose subjects that provide an interesting pattern, that there is nothing more in it. Yet even they do not choose entirely without reference to the character of their subjects.

If one painter chooses to paint a gangrenous (坏疽的) leg and another a lake in moonlight, each of them is directing our attention to a certain aspect of the world. Each painter in telling us something, showing us something, emphasizing something, means that, consciously (有意识地) or unconsciously, he is trying to teach us.

1.An artist hopes that the public will ________.

[ ]

A.understand him and learn from him

B.notice only shapes and colors in his work

C.teach him something

D.believe what he says in his work

2.It is hard to explain what a painter is saying, because ________.

[ ]

A.most painters do not express themselves well

B.a painter uses unusual words and phrases

C.a painter uses shapes and colors instead of words

D.many painters do not say anything

3.A painter chooses certain shapes and colors because he feels that they ________.

[ ]

A.have been used frequently in the past

B.are easy to work with

C.are worth showing to the public

D.will be most attractive to the public

4.Without the artist's work, the public might not ________.

[ ]

A.notice particular shapes or colors

B.see the shapes and colors that express his experience

C.feel his delight in shapes and colors

D.all of the above

Work is a very important part of life in the United States. Americans spend most of their lives working. For most Americans, their work defines them. They are what they do. What happens, then, when a person can no longer work?

Most Americans stop working at the age of sixty-five or seventy and retire. Because work is such an important part of life in this culture, retirement can be very difficult. Retirees often feel that they are useless and unproductive. Of course, some people are happy to retire, but leaving one's job, whatever it is, is a difficult change, even for those who look forward to retiring. Retirement can also bring financial problems. Many people depend on Social Security (保障) checks every month. During their working years, employees contribute a certain percentage of their salaries to the government. Each employer also gives a certain percentage to the government. When people retire, they receive this money as income. These checks do not provide enough money to live on, however, because prices are increasing very rapidly. Senior citizens, those over sixty-five, have to have savings in the bank or other retirement plans to make ends meet. The rate of inflation (物价上涨) is forcing prices higher each year. Social Security checks alone cannot cover these growing expenses. The government offers some assistance, but many serior citizens have to change their life styles after retirement. They have to spend carefully to be sure that they can afford to buy food, fuel and other necessities.

Of course, many senior citizens are happy with their retirement. They have time to spend with their families or to enjoy their hobbies. Some continue to work part time, others do volunteer (志愿者) work. Some, like those in the Retired Business Executives Association, even help young people to get started in new businesses. Many retired citizens also belong to “Golden Age” groups. These organizations plan trips and social events. There are many other opportunities (机会) for retirees.

1.Which of the following could be the best title of the passage?

[ ]

A.“Golden Age” Groups

B.The American Opinion of Work

C.The Importance of Work in America

[ ]

A.Some retirees feel happy as they can have more time to enjoy themselves.

B.Some retirees have to be careful with their money because of the rising prices.

C.Some retirees like to work without being paid.

D.Some retirees find work in new businesses.

3.It can be inferred from the passage that ________.

[ ]

A.the Americans show their value through their work

B.the American government pays little attention to the life of the retirees

C.the retirees' former employers offer some assistance to the retirees

D.the Americans can find no time to travel before their retirement

4.What does the paragraph following the passage most likely discuss?

[ ]

A.An explanation of why the retirees feel lost.

B.The difficult situation the retirees have.

C.A different opinion of the physical and emotional (感情上的) needs of the retirees.

D.A description of other activities the retirees can have.

The desire to make explorations is born with man. Wherever his imagination goes, man also has a strong wish to go. A large part of human history is connected with the exploration of the world in which we live. Again and again people have set out with surprising courage and patience to look into unknown regions and lands to see what had not yet been seen, to make known the unknown. With kites, balloons and aircraft they left the ground to pass through the lower atmosphere. Now outer space receives their attention.

Why should man take the trouble of conquering (征服) space? It is hard to list the specific practical benefits (利益) that will result in. But one knows, from past experience in other areas, that man will surely see and discover new things in space that will increase our scientific knowledge, and this new knowledge will find its way into valuable practical uses. What we learn about man himself, from his experience in space, and from the effects of space and the space flight environment on him, will be extremely valuable. The new techniques developed to carry out the exploration of space, and to keep man alive in space, will certainly find practical uses in everyday life in some way. The areas that will benefit are manifold. They include communication, generation of power, transportation and travel, food production, materials, fuels and many others. But to say definitely (确定地) just what the practical results will be is almost impossible.

“They are in his pockets,” said they.

Social change is more likely to occur in societies where there is a mixture of different kinds of people than in societies where people are similar in many ways. The simple reason for this is that there are more different ways of looking at things present in the first kind of society. There are more ideas, more disagreements in interest, and more groups and organizations with different beliefs in addition, there is usually a greater worldly interest and greater tolerance in mixed societies. All these factors tend to promote (促进) social change by opening more areas of life to decision. In a society where people are quite similar in many ways, there are fewer occasions for people to see the need or the opportunity for change because everything seems to be the same. And although conditions may not be satisfactory, they are at least customary and undisputed (无争议).

Within a society, social change is also likely to occur more frequently and more readily in the material aspects (方面) of the culture than in the nonmaterial, for example, in technology rather than in values; in what has been learned later in life rather than what was learned early, in the less basic and less emotional aspects of society than in their opposites; in the simple elements (原理) rather than in the complex ones; in form rather than in substance (本质); and in elements that are acceptable to the culture rather than in strange elements.

Furthermore, social change is easier if it is gradual. For example, it comes more readily in human relations on a continuous scale rather than one with sharp dichotomies (一分为二). This is one reason why change has not come more quickly to Black Americans as compared to other American minorities (少数民族), because of the sharp difference in appearance between them and their white counterparts.

1.The passage mainly discusses ________.

[ ]

A.two different societies

B.the necessity of social change

C.certain factors that determine the ease with which social changes occur

D.certain factors that promote social change

2.________ is one of the factors that tend to promote social change.

[ ]

A.Joint interest

B.Advanced technology

C.Less emotional people

D.Different points of view

3.The expression “greater tolerance” refer to ________.

[ ]

A.greater willingness to accept social change

B.quicker adaptation (适应) to changing circumstances

C.more respect for different beliefs and behaviour

D.greater readiness to agree to different opinions

4.According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?

[ ]

A.Social change tends to meet with nore difficulty in basic and emotional aspects of society.

B.Disagreement with and argument about conditions tend to slow down social change.

C.Social change is more likely to occur in the material aspect of society.

D.Social change is less likely to occur in what people learned when they were young.

5.Social change is less likely to occur in a society where people are quite similar in many ways because ________.

[ ]

A.people there have got so used to their conditions that they seldom think it necessary to change

B.people there have identical (一致的) needs that can be satisfied without much difficulty

C.people there are easy to please

D.people there are less disputatious (有争议的)

——Picture this: You are driving down the highway, trading stocks, getting news and sports scores, emailing the office and listening to U2, while the kids play “Tomb Raider” on back-seat video screens.

Welcome to telemetric——the brave new world of technical wonder in automobiles.

Advances in computers, wireless and satellite communications and entertainment are making 20th century breakthroughs such as high compression engines and microprocessors seem antique (古老).

The car is being transformed into a computerized disco on wheels.

For the 21st century driver, voice-activated gadgets will do everything from finding a petrol station to dialing for help if your air bags deploy.

On-board computers will make the car a mobile extension of the office, connected to the Internet and email. It also will be a moving entertainment center with 100 channels of crystal-clear radio and videos on demand.

Telemetric leapt into the future this month when General Motors' OnStar service joined with Fidelity Investments to provide drivers with financial (金融) information and allow them to trade stocks and mutual funds (投资公司) from their cars.

Telemetric in seen as a rich source of possible income by several automakers. UBS Warburg analyst Saul Rubin estimates (估计) the market for telemetric hardware and services will grow from US $4.2 billion this year to US $47.2 billion 2010.

GM has settled its OnStar service in a million vehicles and has made deals to offer it in cars built by Toyota and Honda. Ford has set up a joint venture (联合股份公司) with Qualcomm called Wingcast to sell telemetric in Ford vehicles.

But the Chrysler unit of Daimler Chrysler, which once offered a talking car, says it has no plans to rush in. Chrysler officials says they will wait until technology advances further and a set of industry standards for telemetric is set up.

Price is another factor. GM offers two OnStar packages, one for US $200 a year and one for US $400. The company offers it free for the first 12 months.

I want to see a time when everyone with a bent for medicine is in the field, contributing to better health care for all of us. I want to see a time when people with special talent, whatever their sex (性别), take their place in making the world free of disease.” The speaker is Dr. Jane C. The sun was hot. A small crowd of staring children had gathered round the car. They were very small and rather charming, with their thick black hair and enormous dark eyes and thumb sucking curiosity. The place seemed dead, with an afternoon deadness. No one was working, if there was a cafe it was only some dark room in one of the cottages; and I saw no women. Apart from the children, the skinny hens scratching, and a miserable-looking donkey with rope sores, the only creature moving was an old man who sat in the sun smoking a pipe. He could, indeed, hardly be said to be moving. He seemed to be smoking almost in his sleep, and his eyes turned up slowly and half blind as Hamid greeted him and asked him who would sell us the fruit that hung still on the lovely trees.

The old man waited a full half minute while the question wound its way through his brain, then he removed the pipe from his mouth, turned his head round slightly, spat into the dust, and said something we could not understand. Then he went on staring at nothing and the pipe went back into his mouth.

Hamid smiled at me over his shoulder, said:“I won't be a moment,” and disappeared into a dark doorway.

I wandered across the street, the children following. At the edge of the road was a six-foot wall holding up, it seemed, the piece of flat land on which the village was built. Below this were the terraced fields where I had been the rider on the brown horse. The sunflowers were too tall and too thickly planted to allow many other flowers to grow, but there were a few blue flowers at the foot of the wall, and a red one like a small rose.

3.The old man was not very helpful, because he ________.

[ ]

A.was asleep

B.wanted to sell the fruit

C.did not answer clearly

D.would not stop smoking

4.The last paragraph tells us that ________.

[ ]

A.the village was enclosed by a wall

B.the village was on level ground

C.the village was on a small slope
