What makes one person more intelligent than another? What makes one person a genius , like the brilliant Albert Einstein and another person a fool? Are people born, intelligent or stupid, or is intelligence the result of where and how you live? These are very old questions and answers to them are still not clear.

We know , however , that just being born with a good mind is not enough. In some ways , the mind is like a leg or an arm muscle. It needs exercise .Mental exercise is important for young children. Many child psychologists think that parents should play with their children more often and give them problems to think about. The children are then more likely to grow up bright and intelligent. If, on the other hand, children are left alone a great deal with nothing to do , they are more likely to become dull and unintelligent.

Parents should also be careful what they say to young children. According to some psychologists , if parents are always telling a child that he or she is a fool or an idiot , then the child is more likely to keep doing silly and foolish things.

So it is probably better for parents to say very positive (helpful) things to their children , such as “That was a very clever thing you did. ” or “You are such a smart child”.

It was a high cliff (悬崖). Tom had been climbing for a long time. He was getting tired. Suddenly a piece of rock broke off his fingers. He almost fell.

He looked down and again almost fell. The ground was far below him. He looked up. It was still a long way to the top. He let his foot feel around below, but there was nothing there. He couldn't find the rock where his foot had been.“I'm going to fall,”he said aloud. His voice sounded frightened. Behind and below him ,quite near , a girl's voice spoke.

“Thank you , ”he said. “You saved me. This is a dangerous climb. I shouldn't have tried it. A girl fell from here last year. She was killed.”

It is reported that 93% of the British companies will still be operating in the year 2000 and 70% will add to their business. Only 7% said they are unsure. Most

Take a rapid look at someone , then look away. Do you realize you have made a statement ? Hold the glance for a second longer, and you have made a different statement. Hold it for three seconds , and the meaning has changed again. For every social situation , there is an allowed time that you can hold a person's look without being close, rude or dangerous. If you are on a lift , what stare time are you permitted? To answer this question, consider what you specially do. You very likely give other passengers a quick look to judge of them and to let them believe that you mean no harm. Since being close to another person suggests the possibility of communication, you need to give a signal telling others you want to be left alone. So you cut off eye contact (接触) , what Dr. Erving Goffman (1963 ) calls “a dimming of the lights”. You look down at the floor, at the lift door, or anywhere but into another passenger's eyes. If you break the rule against staring at a stranger on a lift, you'll make the other person gradually uncomfortable , and you are likely to feel a bit strange yourself.

If you hold eye contact for more than 3 seconds , what are you telling another person? Much depends on the person and the situation. For instance , a man and a woman communicate interest in this matter. They may look at each other for about 3 seconds at a time , then drop their eyes down for 3 seconds , before letting their eyes meet again. But if one man gives another man a 3-second-plus stare , he signals, “I know you”, “I am interested in you,” or “You look strange and I am curious about you. ” This type of stare often produces unfriendly feelings.

1.We can learn from the first paragraph that ________.

[ ]

A.every glance has its meaning

B.staring at a person is an expression of interest

C.a glance longer than 3 seconds is unacceptable

D.a glance carries more meaning than words

2.If you want to be left alone on a lift, the best thing to do is ________.

[ ]

A.to look into another person's eyes honestly

B.to avoid eye contact with other passengers

C.to give a signal that you are not dangerous

D.to keep a distance from other passengers

3.By “a dimming of the lights ”, Dr. Erving Goffman means “________”.

[ ]

A.closing one's eyes

B.turning off the lights

C.stopping staring at others

D.reducing stare time to the least

4.The passage mainly discusses ________.

[ ]

A.the limited time of eye contact

B.the passing of ideas through eye contact

C.proper manners in different social situations

D.the role of eye contact in inter-personal communication

Have you ever been afraid to talk back when you were treated unfairly? Have you ever bought something just because the salesman talked you into it? Are you afraid to ask someone for a date?

Many people are afraid to assert themselves(坚持自己的权利). Dr. Robert Alberti, author of “Stand Up, Speak Out, and Talk Back, ”thinks it's because their self-esteem (自尊) is low. “Our whole set-up makes people doubt themselves,” says Alberti. “There's always a ‘superior’ around-a parent, a teacher, a boss,-who ‘knows better’. These ‘superiors’ gain when they destroy your self-esteem.”

But Alberti and other scientists are doing something to help people assert themselves. They offer “assertiveness training” courses-AT. In the AT courses people learn that they have a right to be themselves. They learn to speak out and feel good about doing so. They learn to be aggressive without hurting other people.

In one way, learning to speak out is to overcome fear. A group taking an AT course will help the timid person to lose his fear But AT uses an even stronger motive(动机)-the need to share. The timid person speaks out in the group because he wants to tell how he feels. AT says you can get to feel good about yourself. And once you do, you can learn to speak out.

1.The problem the writer talks about is that ________.

[ ]

A.some people buy things they don't want

B.some people are afraid to stick up for their rights

C.there are too many superiors around us

D.some people don't think highly enough of themselves

2.The cause of the problem talked about in this passage is that ________.

[ ]

A.some people have a low self-esteem

B.there is always someone around who knows better

C.people don't share enough

D.some people are too timid

3.The effect of our set-up on people is often to ________.

[ ]

A.make them distrust their own answers to problems

B.make things more favorable for superiors

C.keep them from speaking out as much as their superiors do

D.help them to learn to speak up for their rights

4.One thing AT doesn't do is ________.

[ ]

A.use the need of people to share

B.show people they have a right to be themselves

C.help people overcome fear

D.help people to assert themselves even if others suffer
