During the first half of the nineteenth century in the United States, Christmas was a very different kind of holiday than it is today. As Christmas became more popular,some states declared the day a state holiday.Louisiana was the first state to make the move in eighteen thirty-seven.  75   .It was not until eighteen seventy that President Ulysses Grant made Christmas a federal holiday.
