Last year, I lost my best friend in high school. It seemed that everyone else’s life could just continue on in its  36 way, but mine couldn’t. I wasn’t sure how I was going to be able to face  37 and their gossip at school. I was forced to   38 my routine on Monday morning as usual. In the evening I returned home from school  39 completely defeated. All I wanted to do was  40 into bed and wallow(沉迷于)in my own self-pity. I pulled back the covers on my bed and  41 a pile of cards left by my dad. Each card included a(n)  42 that it was to be opened on a  43 night that week.
I made it through that week   44 my father. Each card 45 to say just what I needed to hear. Tuesday’s card said, “The past is painful to think about and the  46 is impossible to imagine. Don’t try. Just take it one minute at a time.” On Wednesday my mood  47 when I read, “What you are feeling now is   48 and normal. It still feels very bad, but it is part of the healing  49 .” Friday’s card contained a poem he wrote. The last lines made me smile through my tears. “Whatever special  50 you face along life’s way, may you  51 that you will find the best in every day.” I was instructed to open the last card  52 the party I went to on Saturday night. In it he wisely reminded me to  53 . “The world isn’t so bad after a good laugh. The more you laugh, the more you heal.” Each card was signed, “Love, Dad.”
My world once collapsed but I  54 the difficult breakup eventually. It owed to my dad , who made his  55 known when he couldn’t be present.

I grew up poor – living with six brothers, my father and a wonderful mother. We had   36 money and few worldly goods, but plenty of love and attention. I was   37  and energetic. I understood that no matter how poor a person was, they could   38  afford a dream.
My dream was to be a   39 .When I was sixteen, I could crush a baseball, throw a ninety-mile-per-hour fastball. I was also   40 : my high-school coach was Ollie Jarvis, who   41 me the difference between having a dream and showing strong belief. One particular   42 with him changed my life forever.
It was a summer and a friend recommended me for a summer   43 . This meant a chance for my first income—cash for a new bike and new clothes, and the   44 of savings for a house for my mother. The opportunity was attracting, and I wanted to   45  at it.
Then I realized I would have to   46  summer baseball to handle the work schedule, and that meant I would have to tell Coach Jarvis I wouldn’t be playing. I was   47  about this.
When I told Coach Jarvis, he was as   48 as I expected him to be. “You have your whole life to work,” he said. “Your   49 days are limited. You can’t afford to waste them.”
I stood before him with my head   50 , trying to think of how to explain to him why my dream of buying my mom a house and having money in my pocket was worth   51  his disappointment in me.
“How much are you going to make at this job?” he demanded.
“$ 3.25 an hour,” I replied.
“Well, is $ 3.25 an hour the price of a   52 ?” he asked.
That   53 laid bare for me the difference between wanting something right now and having a goal. I devoted myself to   54  that summer, and within the year I was offered a $ 20,000 contract. I signed with the Denver Broncos in 1984 for $ 1.7 million, and bought my mother the   55 of my dreams.

I am a team leader in an insurance company. We are going through a lot of changes right now, which is   36  much stress for all of us.
A few weeks ago I was having a day so   37  that I even doubted if I had the ability to do this challenging work, and was about ready to change to a less stressful job   38  . Something happened that day to change my way of   39  and I am so appreciative of this young lady. I want to let her know that the small act   40  .
On the top of my cubicle (工作隔间) I have a small collection of lighthouses (灯塔) to let people know where I am sitting   41  my team members have to find me for emergencies.
That day I came into the office and was about to get the day   42  when Crystal came over. I asked if she needed anything. And she said, “I   43  you something.” I looked at her with a   44  look and said, “Well, thank you, but why   45  you buy me anything?” I had never spoke to this young lady   46 . She said, “Every day I stand up and look across the     47  and see your lighthouses. Then I feel I am not alone and I encourage myself that there are always   48  things in life. I saw this on the way to work and thought   49  would like it. I wish it would have the same   50  as your lighthouses do.” In her hand she had a small globe with a lighthouse and a ship on it. I gave her a hug and   51  her. I don’t think she knows how much that small act of   52  changed my day: I remained   53  the rest of the day.
For anyone that reads this, I hope you remember, no matter what the   54  is, you could change someone’s day,   55  even his views on life.

Although I love my life, it hasn’t been a lot of fun as I’ve been ill for 28 years.
Music has always been a great love of mine and, in my 20s, when my   16  was more manageable , I   17  ten years as a professional singer in restaurants, playing and singing folk songs.   18  that was years ago and times have changed.   19  I live with mother on a country farm.
Two years ago, I decided that I would need to have some kind of extra work to   20   my disability pension (残疾抚恤金).   21  I needed to sleep in the afternoons,  I was limited in my   22  . I decided that I would consider   23  to singing in restaurants.
My family are all musicians, so I was   24  when I went into our local music store. I explained that I wanted to sing again but using recorded karaoke music. I knew that discs were very expensive and I really didn’t have a lot of   25  to get started. And   26  you find only three to four songs out of ten on a disc that you can   27  use.
When I told the owner of the shop about my   28 ; he gave me a long thoughtful     29 . “This means a lot to you, doesn’t it?” he said. “Come with me.”
He led me   30  the crowded shop and to a bench with a large professional karaoke box on it. He placed his large hand   31  on his treasure and said, “I have 800 karaoke songs in here. You can take your   32  and I’ll record them for you. That should get you started.”
I   33 . Thanking him, I made a time with him to listen to all the songs and choose    34  that I could sing. I have come full circle with his help.
His   35  still warms my heart and makes me do just that bit extra, when I have the chance.
