And the things that don’t    52   have the most important meaning to us, and I am sure they will be there for the    53   of our lives. After all, every time I hear my father’s    54   “All right you guys, come on down, nice and slow” and we go down the stairs, first my brother, then me, then my sister, then my older brother, I still    55   the true Christmas spirit.

As the big weekend approaches, my feelings about you and your marriage are personal and it’s more   36  to me that you realize how much I love you and how   37  I am of the amazing woman you have become.
My memory for details is terrible,   38  my memory for how   39  you were as a child is vivid. I loved tossing (轻扔) you   40  in the air in the pool in Marine, and reading   41  books on the floor of the Denver book store with you on my knees.

The third heart is just pretty and represents your   51 , inside and   52  kind. You are a wonderful, loving   53  from God, a beautiful human being. So we are delighted that you are entering this exciting part of your life.
Finally, the wedding (婚姻) will be amazing. I can’t wait to see you walk down in your beautiful dress. And I can’t wait to dance with you in   54 . My hope is that the event and the whole weekend will bring   55  memories.
This from your devoted and proud...Dad

I grew up poor---living in the housing projects (住房) with six brothers, three sisters, a varying assortment (各式各样东西的混合) of foster kids (养子), my father, and a wonderful mother, Scarlette Hunley. We had little money and few worldly goods, but plenty of love and attention. I was  36  and energetic. I understood that no matter how poor a person was, he could still  37  a dream.
My dream was  38 . By the time I was sixteen, I could crush a baseball, and hit anything that moved on the baseball field. I was also  39 : My high school coach Jarvis, who not only believed in me, but taught me how to believe in myself. He  40  me the difference between having a dream and showing conviction (信念). One particular incident with Coach Jarvis changed my life forever.
It was the summer between my junior and senior years, and a friend  41  me for a summer job. This meant a chance for money in my pocket—cash for dates with girls, certainly, money for a new bike and new clothes, and the start of savings for a  42  for my mother. The prospect of a summer job was attractive and interesting, and I wanted to jump at the opportunity. Then I realized I would have to  43  summer baseball to handle the work schedule, and that meant I would have to tell Coach Jarvis I wouldn’t be playing.
When I told Coach Jarvis, he was  44  as I expected him to be. “You have your whole life to work,” he said. “Your  45  days are limited. You can’t afford to waste them.”
I stood before him with my head hanging, trying to think of the words that would explain to him why my dream of buying my mom a house and having money in my pocket was worth facing his  46  to me.
“How much are you going to make at this job, son?” He demanded. “3.5 dollars an hour.” I replied. “Well,” he asked, “Is $3.5 an hour the price of a dream?”
That question, the plainness of it, laid bare for me the difference between wanting something right now and having a goal. I dedicated myself to sports that summer and with the year I was hired by the Pittsburgh Pirates to play baseball, and was  47  a $20,000 contract. I signed with the Denver Broncos in 1998 for $1.7 million, and bought my mother the house of my dreams.

There is a fine line between a parent who is active and open-minded and one that doesn’t know when to let go (放手). As my daughter, Nicole, prepares to leave home for college, I’m discovering how hard it is to stay on the  36  side of this line. Nicole’s  40 : “No, I’m not interested in that.”   ………
Two months ago, she was   41  to a great university. However, I was still the mother having a   42  time letting go. The night before the introductory meeting of the university, I had read the course catalog carefully and   43  courses which I thought looked good. We met on the campus the next afternoon, and Nicole’s face  44  with excitement. “I have had my entire schedule figured out,” she said. “Already?” I was astonished,  45  she should have discussed it with me. I examined the schedule. Nicole hadn’t taken a (an)  46  one of the courses I had suggested. Every course she had chosen  47  suited her interests. There have been a few holes along the way.  53 , she is well-equipped and eager to  54  the future. The next step, I recognized, was mine to take: giving my daughter and myself the  55  we both needed.

There are many different ways of seeing a town for the first time. One of them is to walk around it, guide-book   36  hand. Of course, we may   37  with our guide-books the history and   38  developments of a town and get to know them.   39  then, if we take out time and  40  in a town for a while, we may get to know it better. When we   41  it as a whole, we begin to have some   42  ,which even the best guide-books do not answer. Why is the town just  43  this, this shape, this plan, this size? Why do its streets   44   in this particular way, and not in any   45  way?
Here even the best guide-book   46  us. One can’t find in it the information about how a town has developed to the   47  appearance. It may not describe the original (最初的)   48  of a town. However, one may get some idea of what it   49  look like by walking around the town. One can also imagine   50  the town was first planned and built . Then one can learn more about in what direction the town   51  to develop.
What is the   52  of studying towns in the way? For me, it is   53  that one gets a greater depth of pleasure by visiting and seeing a town with one’s own eyes. A   54  visit to a town may help one better understand why it is attractive   55  just reading about it in a guide-book.
