The world needs more people who are truly kind and caring. Yesterday it was about 11:00 p.m.
1
my telephone rang. The number was that of a Best Western Hotel.
2
I don’t pay attention to this type of call.
3
, this time, for some reason, I went ahead and answered it.
The man on the
4
end asked if I knew Samuel K., my 91-year-old grandfather. I didn’t
5
why I was the one he had called. The caller went on to tell me that I was the only
6
listed in my grandpa’s phone book.
The
7
, Mr. Mason, was the manager of the hotel at which my grandpa had shown up, wanting to rent a room. The
8
was that my grandpa had no money with him. He was
9
. He had been going
10
else but had taken the wrong bus and
11
100 miles from home. My grandpa just wanted me to tell Mr. Mason that he was a(n)
12
guy and would pay the money once he got home.
The manager did all he could to help my grandpa, since he didn’t want to
13
my grandpa, and wanted him to spend a
14
night. Not only did he take the time to
15
me, but he also charged just $39 to let my grandpa
16
safely and comfortably overnight. The rooms in that
17
normally go for about $140! And then the staff there all
18
him until my uncle could drive the 100 miles to pick him up!
This is just one more
19
to show that there are still good people out there. Everywhere you go, you can find someone who
20
. Thanks, Mr. Mason!

Strange things happen to time when you travel.
1
the earth is divided into 24 time zones, one hour apart, you can have days with
2
or fewer than 24 hours, and weeks with more or fewer than seven days.
If you
3
a five-day trip across the Atlantic Ocean, your
4
enters a different time zone every
5
. As you enter each zone, the time
6
one hour. Traveling west, you set your clock back; traveling east, you set it
7
. Each day of your trip has
8
25 or 23 hours.
If you travel by ship across the Pacific, you
9
the international date line. By agreement, this is the point
10
a new day begins.
11
you cross the line, you change your
12
one full day, backward
13
forward. Traveling east, today
14
yesterday; traveling west,
15
is tomorrow!

One student took a box of chicken to class, another carried on a cell phone
1
and still another whistled loudly every time the
2
turned his back.
Reform school? No. College.
More and more, professors say, they are coming across
3
students in their classrooms. Many of today’s young scholars (学者) arrive late, leave
4
, talk loud or take care of personal
5
such as paying bills during class.
Why are the students behaving badly?
“Because they can,” said a student of University of North Texas. “A lot of the time, the professors let them get
6
with it.”
Some educators say it is time to bring politeness back to their classrooms—and even
7
taking some of the blame for bad behavior. They say that rude students are by no means the majority but that one of them can ruin an entire
8
.
People are
9
when they learn that impolite behavior is becoming more and more common in
10
education, says Dr Gerald Amanda, a counselor at City College of San Francisco. They
11
some high school students to misbehave but think those who get to
12
will behave more politely.
Dr Amanda believes that society in
13
has become more tolerant (容忍的) of rude behavior and
14
people in power, including professors, no longer
15
standards for
16
. That leads to a growing imprudence (轻率行为)
17
some college students. “There’s a great
18
of bad behavior in the world around them, and young people see it and
19
disrespect,” said Dr Amanda,
20
that sometimes students “have no idea that they are being rude.”

Two sons worked for their father on the family farm. For some years, the
1
brother had been given more
2
to do than the older one. The older brother couldn’t
3
why, so one day he asked his father the

why he always trusted (信任) his younger brother to do more work.
The father said, "Go to the Kelly’s

nearby and see if they have any

The older brother soon

That father then said, "Good, now please ask them the
9
for the ducks."
The son returned, "The ducks are £10 each."
The father asked, "
10
can they deliver (交付) the ducks?"
The son returned, "They can deliver the ducks tomorrow."
The father asked the older brother to
11
and watch. He then said to the younger brother, "Go to the Davidson’s Farm and see if they have any ducks for sale."
The younger brother soon returned with the
12
, "Yes, they have

ducks for £10 each,
14
ten ducks for £8 each; and they can

them tomorrow —I asked them to deliver the five ducks

I told them not to in the next hour. We agreed that if I wanted the

five ducks I could buy them at £6 each."

I lived in Dallas, Texas nearly all my life with my mom, dad and older sister. We were2lto respect others, value education, and get all that we could out of life. My parents always say, “
1
hard and the world is yours.” They are never without a
2
word of advice or a bit of encouragement when life gets tough.
My parents always
3
me to go to college. However, when I
4
at
5
years old that I’d rather get married to a man than go to college, they
6
stopped telling me they loved me and I could do anything I wanted to.
7
, they persuaded me. I graduated from high school and currently
8
the University of Oklahoma studying medicine. I want to make the
9
a better place to live in.
Every time I call home to tell them about a
10
I received in Chemistry Lab or Microeconomics or
11
class it is that I’m working hardest for at the moment, they tell me how
12
of me they are. I know there are college kids out there that have no one to call home to when they get an “A” on a project and I feel incredibly
13
to have my parents.
Don’t get me wrong: We’ve had our share of
14
. I was the angry teenager and they were the awful
15
that wouldn’t let me stay out all night or let me get my tongue pierced. But somehow, we
16
to work through those issues. They never
17
loving in me or believing in me.
I
18
everything I am to my parents. Without their constant love and
19
, I wouldn’t believe I can change the world. My parents taught me to always
20
for what I believe in. So I’m working toward something really great and can only hope I continue to make them proud.

A “Panda Express” plane carrying Mei Lan, three, and Tai Shan, four, landed in Chengdu, where the
1
will join China’s panda – breeding programme.
The pandas were
2
while the two sets of parents were borrowed from China to US zoos. Lent pandas and their young babies must eventually
3
to China.
They both will experience a period of
4
to help themselves deal with the change of language and
5
. Zoo – keepers have advertised for an English – Chinese
6
to teach Mei Lan the Sichuan dialect so that she can understand basic
7
. In Chengdu, mei Lan, from Zoo Atlanta, and Tai Shan, a male from Washington, will have their high – fibre US diet
8
with steamed bread and bamboo shoots.
Since the days of the Cold War China has
9
lent pandas as goodwill gestures, giving rise to the term “panda diplomacy (外交)”. Tai Shan’s
10
will remain at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo in Washington and,
11
, will return to China at the end of their
12
– year loan.
Animal keeper Nicole Meese, who held Tai Shan as a baby, traveled with the animals on the “Panda Express” to China. “Mei Lan was a little
13
, but basically they were both OK,” she said. “I’m going to 48him terribly.”
She has
14
Tai Shan to understand
15
and prepared a booklet of hand signals to help his new
16
at the Bifengzia Breeding Base in Ya’an, Sichuan.
She was the first baby panda born at Zoo Atlanta, bringing thousands more
17
to the zoo and to its webcam online. And she is expected to stay a media
18
in China: people are being asked to
19
potential mates (配偶) via a website. Superman Kobe and Young Yong, or Doubly Brave, are among the
20
. Experts will also add to more into the choice.

You Are Going Places
One day I came home from school, changed my clothes and got ready for work.I work at a local restaurant in town as a cashier, seater and waiter.
I went to work feeling
1
. And to make matters worse, I was busy that evening. It' s the same thing over and over again.
2
with customers who complain about their food and where they are
3
is too big or too small.Little things like that tend to
4
a lot of us
5
but we manage to deal with it.
Three elderly ladies walked in and sat by the windows. It happened to be the very
6
near where I keep the dirty
7
in the boxes.Trying to keep up with all the dirty tables, customers leaving and coming in and
8
running all over the house, it was crazy.
9
these elderly women were watching
10
I was working to make sure every table was clean and ready for the next customers.
When they
11
their meals, I took their plates back to the kitchen. They talked to me for a while about school, how I was doing, what
12
I was in and what I planned to do in the future.
13
they were leaving, they walked past me and one of them said to me in a
14
and gentle voice, "You are going places. And that was it.They left the
15
and I had tears in my eyes, because they gave me
16
to believe in myself.They
17
my spirit from being down and gave me a
18
to keep on working hard.
People used to tell me that I could not have a career in
19
until I had a degree.I'm now a co-anchor (联合主持人)of a student-produced television
20
. And the best thing is: I'm only 17 years old and I am a senior in high school.

I believe that families are not only blood relatives, but sometimes people who show up and love you when no one else will.
In May 1977, I was living in a Howard Johnson’s motel off Interstate 10 in Houston. My dad and I
1
a room with two double beds and a bathroom was too
2
for a 15-year-old girl and her father. Dad’s second marriage was
3
and my stepmother had
4
us both out of the house the previous week. Dad had no
5
what to do with me. And that’s when my other family
6
.
Barbara and Roland Beach took me into their home
7
their only daughter, Su, my best friend, asked them to. I
8
with them for the next seven years.
Barb washed my skirts the same as Su’s. She
9
I had lunch money, doctors’ appointments, help with homework and nightly hugs. Barbara and Roland attended every football game where Su and I were being cheerleaders.
10
I could tell, for the Beaches there was no
11
between Su and me; I was their daughter, too.
When Su and I
12
college they kept my room the same for the entire four years I attended school. Recently, Barb presented me with an insurance policy they bought when I first moved in with them and had continued to pay on for 23 years.
The Beaches knew
13
about me when they took me in – they had heard the whole story from Su. When I was seven, my mother died and from then on my father relied on other people to
14
his kids. Before I went to live with the Beaches I had believed that life was entirely
15
and that love was shaky and untrustworthy. I had believed that the only person who would take care of me was me.
16
the Beaches, I would have become a bitter, cynical (愤世嫉俗的) woman. They gave me a(n)
17
that allowed me to grow and change. They kept me from being paralyzed by my
18
, and they gave me the confidence to open my heart.
I
19
family. For me, it wasn’t the family that was there on the day I was
20
, but the one that was there for me when I was living in a Howard Johnson’s on Interstate 10.

We all have storms through our lives. But we have no right to make everyone else suffer with our own
1
.
The carpenter I
2
to help me restore an old farmhouse had just finished a(n)
3
first day on the job. A flat tire made him lose an hour of work, his electric saw quit, and now his truck
4
to start.
While I drove him home, he sat in stony
5
.
On arriving, he invited me in to meet his family. As we walked toward the front door, he paused
6
at a small tree,
7
tips of the branches with both hands.
When opening the door, he underwent a(n)
8
transformation. His tanned face was wreathed in smiles, and he
9
his two small children and gave his wife a kiss.
The next day my
10
drove me to ask him about what I had seen. “Oh, that’s my trouble tree,” he replied. “I know I can’t
11
having troubles on the job, but the troubles don’t
12
to the house with my family. So I just
13
them up on the tree. Then in the morning I pick them up again.”
“
14
thing is,” he smiled, “when I come out in the morning to pick them up, there aren’t nearly as
15
as I remember the night before.”
Putting
16
around our problems is a really good idea --- it prevents our difficulties from spilling over onto loved people, who can’t do anything about our problems. Why
17
them if they can’t help us?
So, plant yourself a trouble tree outside and use it
18
you come home. Be grateful that you have loved ones to go home to
19
your loved one is simply your beloved dog. And when you picked up your troubles on the way each morning, be
20
that they’re not as heavy as they were the night before.
