Jerry is a popular manager of a restaurant. It was his attitude
1
made the waiters follow him. He was a natural motivator (鼓舞人心的人). If a(n)
2
was having a bad day, Jerry was always there, telling him/her how to look on the
3
side of the situation.
This attitude really made me
4
, so one day I asked him, “I don’t get it! No one can be a positive person
5
. How can you manage it?”
“Every time something bad happens, I can choose to
6
it. Every time someone comes to me complaining, I can choose to accept their complaining and I can
7
the positive side of life. Why don’t we just do that later?” Jerry said.
Jerry told me an unusual story out of his experience. One day he left the back door of his restaurant
8
and was robbed by three men. While trying to open the safe, his hand, shaking from
9
, slipped off the combination (开启号码的号码组合). The robbers got angry and
10
him.
11
, Jerry was found quickly and taken to the hospital. After 18 hours of surgery and weeks of care, Jerry
12
with fragments (碎片) of the bullets (子弹) still in his body.
I saw Jerry about six months after the
13
. I did ask him what had gone through his mind as the accident took place. “Did you lose consciousness? Weren’t you
14
?” I asked.
“No,” Jerry said, “
15
when I saw the expressions on the faces of the doctors and nurses, I got really scared.”
“A nurse asked if I was allergic (过敏的) to anything. ‘Yes’ I replied. The doctors and nurses stopped
16
as they waited for my reply. I took a deep breath and yelled, ‘
17
!’”
“Over the laughter, I told them, ‘Please
18
on me as if I am alive, not dead.’”
Jerry survived
19
the skill of his doctors, but also because of his amazing attitude. Attitude, after all, is

A mining(采矿的)engineer enjoyed flying very much. One day, he was flying his own plane over a lonely island when a
1
storm came, so he was
2
to make a forced landing. The plane was in good
3
but his legs and shoulder got
4
hurt. After getting out of the plane with great
5
, he found nothing but high green hills
6
the place. He lay there expecting to die.
Soon, however, some men appeared from out of the forest. Though curious, they were not
7
of him. He was then gently
8
to their village, where he was well treated. His
9
improved little by little and he became their

and pleasant and he was in

hurry to leave.
Several months later, he learned some of their language and
13
them some of his own.
One day, he discovered some sings of
14
mineral deposits(矿藏)in the soil. He decided to
15
to his country and set up a firm(公司)to mine the land.
It was not long
16
the peaceful land was taken over by strange men and machines. When there was
17
left to mine, the firm
18
away. They had made a great deal of
19
for themselves, but the villagers’ land was
20
. Now it is impossible to grow crops there.

About a year ago, I went to stay at a Detroit hotel. I didn’t want to
1
too much money with me, so I asked the desk clerk to put a hundred-dollar bill in the safe for me.
The next morning,
2
, the clerk said that he knew nothing about my money. I didn’t have any proof
3
I had given the man the money. There was clearly nothing left to do but go to the
4
lawyer.
The lawyer
5
me to return to the hotel with him and give another hundred dollar bill to the desk. So we did. An hour later, I went
6
to the desk and asked for my money.
7
I had the lawyer as an eyewitness to the
8
hundred dollar bill, the clerk could not say he
9
nothing about it.
Another hour later, I put the second part of the lawyer’s
10
into action. This time both the lawyer and I went to the hotel to
11
for the hundred-dollar bill once again, and
12
the clerk insisted that he had given
13
to me, I said it was not true. The lawyer said to him, “ I
14
this gentleman give you a hundred-dollar bill. If you don’t hand it
15
immediately, I will be forced to call the
16
”. The clerk realized he had been
17
, so he gave me back the first hundred-dollar bill.
“ I don’t know
18
to thank you enough for
19
my money back.” I said to the lawyer. And what do you suppose he answered? He said, “ Oh, don’t
20
me. That will be one hundred dollars, please.”

In this modern world, we rush around all day, doing things, talking, emailing, sending and reading messages. We are always on, always connected, always thinking, always talking. There is no
1
for stillness.
And when we are
2
to be still because we’re in line for something, or waiting at a doctor’s appointment, or on a bus or train, we often
3
something to do. Some will play with mobile devices, others will read something. Being still isn’t something we’re
4
.
This comes at a
5
: we lose that time for
6
, for observing and listening. We lose peace.
And
7
yet: sometimes too much action is worse than no action at all. You can run around crazily, but get
8
done.
Take a moment to think about
9
you spend your days. Are you constantly rushing around? Are you constantly reading and answering
10
, checking on the news and the latest stream of information? Are you always
11
through your schedule?
Is this how you want to spend your
12
? If so, peace be with you. If not, take a moment to be
13
. Don’t think about what you have to do, or what you’ve done already.
14
be in the moment.
Then after a minute or two of doing that, consider your life, and how you’d
15
it to be. See your life with less movement, less doing, less rushing. See it with more stillness, more consideration, more
16
.
Then be that vision.
It’s pretty simple: all you have to do is sit still for a little bit each day.
17
you’ve gotten used to that, try doing less each day. Breathe when you feel yourself moving too
18
. Slow down. Be present. Find happiness now, in this moment, instead of
19
for it.
20
the stillness. It’s a treasure, and it’s available to us, always.

I was only eight years old when the Second World War ended, but I can still remember something about the
1
celebrations in the small town where I lived on the day when the war in Europe ended. We had not
2
much from the war where, though, like most children of my age, I often saw
3
houses in the streets and the very big
4
lorries(卡车) passing through. But both at home and at school I had become
5
to the phrases “before the war” and “when the war is over”. “Before the war”, obviously,
6
had been better, though I was too young to understand why,
7
there had been no bombs then, and people had eaten things like ice cream and bananas, which I had
8
heard of. When the war was over we would go back to London, but this meant very
9
to me. I did not remember what London was like.
What I remember now
10
V-Day(victory day) was the afternoon and the evening. Some boys and girls were collecting
11
and building an enormous bonfire(篝火). We stood and watched them for a time, and then I went home and
12
myself in with my key and waited for my parents to come back from work.
It was May and still broad
13
when my mother arrived, and my father came in about an hour later. After dinner I said I wanted to
14
the bonfire, so when it got dark my father took me to the end of the street. The bonfire was very
15
, and somehow people had collected some old clothes to
16
“Hitler” with the moustache(胡子) they had put on top of it. Just as we arrived, they set light to it. The flames
17
soon. Everyone was cheering and shouting.
I stood beside my father until the
18
started to go down, not knowing what to say. He said nothing, either. He had
19
in the First World War and remembered everything he had experienced. At last he said, “Well, that’s it, son. Let’s hope that this time it really will be the
20
one.”

I did very badly at school. My headmaster thought I was
1
and when I was 14 he said, “You’re never going to be
2
but a failure.”
After five years of
3
jobs, I fell in love with a very nice middle-class girl. It was the best
4
that could have happened to me. I
5
I wanted to do something positive (积极地) with my life because I wanted to prove to
6
that what people said about me was
7
. Especially her mother, who had said to me, “Let’s
8
it, you’ve failed at everything you’ve ever done.” So I tried hard with my
9
and went to college. My first novel (小说)
10
while I was at college.
`After college I taught during the
11
in high schools and attended evening classes at London University, where I got a
12
in history. I became a lecturer at a college and was thinking of
13
that job to write full time
14
I was offered a part-time job at Leeds University. I began to feel proud of myself —
15
was a working-class boy who’d
16
school early, now teaching at the university
My writing career (职业) took off when I discovered my own style. Now I’m rich and
17
, have been on TV, and met lots of film stars.
18
what does it mean? I
19
wish all the people that have put me down had
20
: “I believe in you. You’11 succeed.”

Not long ago, I had a hard week at work.
1
just kept popping up(出现) everywhere and I was struggling to keep from

3
point.
One day, I made a trip across town to the store. After I
4
, I realized I had left my purse with credit cards at home.
5
, I had a small amount of cash in my pocket, so I
6
it, my coupons(优惠券) and went inside. The store was really
7
, but I just found what I needed, waiting for the cashier(收银员) to check out my
8
. I waited and waited, meanwhile my anger grew. I had a bad day and all I wanted to do was go home, but I was
9
in the line.
Finally, I got to the front, but the cashier didn’t
10
my coupons. I was upset because I had used
11
coupons there before. It didn’t
12
me. I would just pay in cash. Then the cashier said it was 10 dollars. SHOCK! I was a little
13
. Now I was mad at myself for forgetting my purse and only taking a small amount of cash. Without a credit card or anything else, I
14
my things and started to go back out to my car, wondering to myself why everything had
15
for me.
Just as I was headed out, an employee
16
me and said a lady in the
17
had paid the difference for me and left.
18
the amount she paid was small, the act was huge. A stranger, whom I had never met, completely changed my attitude with her
19
. Maybe next time I see someone having a
20
day, I’11 do the same as her. After all, you never know whose day you might change.

When I was a boy, every holiday that I had seemed wonderful. In those days the sun seemed to shine always brightly

in one’s pockets or good places where one could
4
ice creams. Each day seemed a lifetime.
Although I am now thirty-five years old, my idea of a good
5
is much the same as it was. I
6
like the sun and warm sand and the sound of waves beating the rocks. I no longer wish to
7
any sand house or sand garden, and I dislike sweets.
8
, I love the sea and often feel sand running through my fingers.
Sometimes I
9
what my ideal holiday will be like when I am old. All I want to do then, perhaps, will be to lie in bed, reading books about
10
who make houses and gardens with sands, who watch the incoming tide, who make themselves sick of too many ice creams.

Unchangeable Love
One day I visited an art museum while waiting for my husband to finish a business meeting.I was expecting a quiet view of the splendid
1
.
A young
2
viewing the paintings ahead of me
3
nonstop between themselves.I watched them a moment and
4
the lady was doing all the talking.I admired the man's
5
for putting up with her
6
stream of words.
7
by their noise, I moved on.
I met them several times as I moved through the various rooms of art. Each time I heard her constant flow of words, I moved away
8
.
I was standing at the counter of the museum gift shop making a
9
when the couple approached the
10
.Before they left, the man
11
into his pocket and pulled out a white object. He
12
it into a long stick and then tapped his way into the
13
to get his wife's jacket.
"He's a
14
man." the clerk at the counter said."Most of us would give up if we were blinded at such a young age.During his recovery, he made a promise his life wouldn't change.
So, as before, he and his wife come in
15
there is a new art show."
"But what does he get out of the art?" I asked."He can't see."
"Can't see! You're
16
.He sees a lot.More than you and I do," the clerk said."His wife
17
each painting so he can see it in his head."
I learned something about patience,
18
and love that day.I saw the patience of a young wife describing paintings to a person without
19
and the courage of a husband who would not
20
blindness to change his life. And I saw the love shared by two people as I watched this couple walk away, hand in hand.
