It was the time when the telegraph was the fastest method of long-distance communication. A young man
1
for a job as a Morse Code(摩尔斯电码)operator.
Having answered an ad in the newspaper, he went to the office address that was
2
.When he arrived, he entered a large, busy
3
filled with noise and clatter, including the sound of the telegraph in the background. A
4
on the wall told job applicants to fill out a form and wait until they were
5
to enter the inner office. The young man filled out his form and sat down with the seven
6
applicants in the waiting area.
7
a few minutes, the young man stood up suddenly,
8
the room to the door of the inner office, and walked right in.
9
the other applicants came alive, wondering what was
10
. They whispered among themselves that they hadn’t been told to come yet and thought that the young man made a
11
and wouldn’t be accepted.
12
, when the employer went out of the office with the young man, he said to the other applicants , “Gentlemen, thank you very much for coming, but the
13
has just been filled .”
The other applicants began
14
and one of them
15
, “Wait a minute, I don’t understand. He was the
16
to come in, and we never even got a chance to be
17
. Yet he got the job. That’s not fair!”
The employer said, “I’m sorry, but
18
you’ve been sitting here, the telegraph has been
19
the following message in Morse Code: If you understand this message, then come right in. The job is yours.
20
of you heard it or understood it. This young man did. The job is his.”

The first day of school our professor introduced himself and challenged us to get to know a new classmate.I
1
to look around when a gentle hand
2
my shoulder.I turned around to find a wrinkled, little
3
lady looking up at me with a smile.
She said, “Hi.My name is Rose.I’m eighty-seven years old.Can I give you a hug?” I laughed and
4
responded, “Of course you may!” and she gave me a giant(巨大的) squeeze.
“Why are you in college at such a young, innocent
5
?”I asked.“I always
6
having a college education and now I’m getting
7
!” she told me.
Later, we became close friends.Every day we would leave class together and she
8
her wisdom and experience with me.Over the
9
of the year, Rose became a campus icon and she
10
made friends wherever she went.
At the
11
of the semester(学期)we invited Rose to speak at our football banquet(宴会).I’11
12
forget what she taught us.When she was introduced, frustrated and a little embarrassed, she cleared her
13
and said, “We do not stop playing because we are old; we
14
old because we stop playing. There are only two secrets to staying
15
, being happy, and achieving success. You have to
16
and find humor every day. You’ve got to have a dream. When you
17
your dreams, you die.”
One week after graduation Rose died
18
in her sleep. Many college students attended her funeral in tribute to(悼念)the wonderful woman who taught
19
example that it’s never too
20
to be all you can possibly be.

Carolyn Stradley is the founder of C&S Paving Ine.(铺路公司)in Atlanta,USA.In the following account, she recalls the job that challenged her
1
and skill but left her flying high.
“When the Atlanta Airport was under
2
in 1979,we were a new company struggling to make it.National Car Rental wanted to have 2500 square meters of dirt paved
3
the cars could be on site
4
the airport opened, and the official opening was only ten days away!
5
other local paving company wanted to do the job,
6
it couldn’t be done in such a short time.”
“Because we were new and really needed the work,we were
7
to try harder. We gave National Car Rental our offer and
8
our best effort to get the job finished within ten days.We also
9
them that if we failed, they would be no worse off,
10
they had plenty to gain if we succeeded.”
“We got the job and immediately went into
11
.Working at night needed lights,so I rented a machine to produce electricity for the site. Our
12
challenge was to keep the rock mixture
13
enough. All the available water wagons(洒水车)were rented out for the airport construction, and we certainly couldn’t afford to buy a new one.
14
,I got a special
15
to rent fire engine hoses(消防水龙带)and connect them to nearby hydrants(消防);then I
16
held one of those hoses to
17
down the rock.”
“Those ten days were filled with challenges that
18
one creative idea after another.Nine days later, the night before the airport opened,National Car Rental was the
19
company that had cars on the parking lot.”
“The key to our success was having the
20
to take on any job and then being creative in our approach to getting it done.”

I was said to be the worst student in my class, and my family thought I was hopeless. I had to
1
grade six. at that time a new teacher, Miss Sadia, came to our school.
One day after class, she
2
that I was staying alone during the lunch break. She came to me and began to talk to me. It was just a
3
conversation. After that day, she gave me particular
4
and it made me feel special(特别). I started to work hard because she gave me the feeling that
5
believed me , and my
6
started to improve(提高) in her subject.
Months later, she moved into a house near my
7
. We would walk home together after school. Her constant (不断的 ) support helped me,
8
in my studies, as I knew she would
9
my grades both in her subject and the other subjects. I finally
10
second in my class.
Then, after grade six, she started to slowly drift away(疏远)
11
still kept a constant(不断的) check on me. By the time I was in grade seven, we
12
spoke, but by then I had become the
13
in my class. When I left my school, I was
14
with her, as she never answered the
15
when I called her.
Then I graduated and went to a good university. One fine day, our paths(路)
16
again. I met her at a wedding. I could not
17
asking her, "Why did you stop talking to me?"
"You are a clever boy. I wanted you to be a tree
18
on your own roots, not depending on (依靠)others. Now here you are and I feel
19
of you. You are your inspiration and do not need to
20
a shoulder," she said. I could not say anything, but I smiled. I'11 always thank her .

A young man was getting ready to graduate from college. For many months he had
1
a beautiful sports car in a showroom, and knowing his father could well
2
it, he told him that was all he wanted.
As Graduation Day came near, the young man awaited
3
that his father had bought the car.
4
, on the morning of his graduation, his father called him into his
5
study room. His father told him how
6
he was to have such a fine son, and told him how
7
he loved him. He handed his son a beautifully wrapped (包装)
8
box.
Curious, and somewhat disappointed, the young man opened the box and
9
a lovely, leather-bound (皮纸封面) Bible,
10
the young man’s name pressed in gold.
11
, he raised his voice to his father, and said “With
12
your money, you give me a Bible?” and stormed out of the house.
Many years passed and the young man was very successful in
13
. He had a beautiful home and wonderful family, but realized his father was very
14
, and thought perhaps he should go to him. He had not seen him
15
that graduation day.
Before he could make arrangements, he received a telegram
16
his father had passed away, and willed all his possessions to his son. He needed to come home immediately and
17
things.
When he arrived at his father’s house, sudden
18
and regret filled his heart. He began to search through his father’s important papers and saw the still gift-wrapped Bible
19
as he had left it years ago. With tears, he opened the Bible and began to turn the pages.
Suddenly, a car key dropped from the back of the
20
. It had a tag (标签) with the date of his graduation on it, and the words PAID IN FULL.

There stood our preacher… he was the “homeless man”.The preacher took his Bible (圣经) and

I lived in Dallas, Texas nearly all my life with my mom, dad and older sister. We were
1
to respect others, value education, and get all that we could out of life. My parents always say, “
2
hard and the world is yours.” They are never without a
3
word of advice or a bit of encouragement when life gets tough.
My parents always
4
me to go to college. However, when I
5
at 16 years old that I’d rather get married to a man than go to college, they
6
stopped telling me they loved me and I could anything I wanted to.
7
, they persuaded me. I graduated from high school and currently
8
the University of Oklahoma studying medicine. I want to make the
9
a better place to live in.
Every time I call home to tell them about a
10
I received in Chemistry Lab or Microeconomics or whichever
11
it is that I’m working hardest for at the moment, they tell me how
12
of me they are. I know there are college kids out there that have no one to call home when they an “A” on a project and I feel incredibly
13
to have my parents.
Don’t get me wrong: We’ve had our share of
14
. I was the angry teenager and they were the awful
15
that wouldn’t let me stay out all night or let me get my tongue pierced(扎洞).But somehow, we
16
to work through those issues. They never
17
loving in me or believing in me.
I
18
everything I am to my parents. Without their
19
love and encouragement, I wouldn’t believe I can change the world. My parents taught me to always
20
for what I believe in. So I’m working toward something really great and can only hope I continue to make them proud.

I grew up poor – living with six brothers, my father and a wonderful mother. We had
1
money and few worldly goods, but plenty of love and attention. I was

and energetic. I understood that no matter how poor a person was, they could
3
afford a dream.
My dream was to be a
4
. When I was sixteen, I could crush a baseball, throw a ninety – mile – per – hour fastball. I was also
5
: my high – school coach was Ollie Jarvis, who
6
me the difference between having a dream and showing strong belief. One particular
7
with him changed my life forever.
It was a summer and a friend recommended me for a summer
8
. This meant a chance for my first income – cash for a new bike and new clothes, and the
9
of savings for a house for my mother. The opportunity was attracting, and I wanted to
10
at it.
Then I realized I would have to
11
summer baseball to handle the work schedule, and that meant I would have to tell Coach Jarvis I wouldn’t be playing. I was
12
about this.
When I told Coach Jarvis, he was as
13
as I expected him to be. “You have your whole life to work,” he said. “Your
14
days are limited. You can’t afford to waste them.”
I stood before him with my head
15
, trying to think of how to explain to him why my dream of buying my mom a house and having money in my pocket was worth
16
his disappointment in me.
“How much are you going to make at this job?” he demanded.
“$ 3.25 an hour,” I replied.
“Well, is $ 3.25 an hour the price of a
17
?” he asked.
That
18
laid bare for me the difference between wanting something right now and having a goal. I devoted myself to
19
that summer, and within the year I was offered a $ 20,000 contract. I signed with the Denver Broncos in 1984 for $ 1.7 million, and bought my mother the
20
of my dreams.

Four years ago,an accident took my wife away and I had to take care of our youny child . There was one particular night, when I had an
1
at work. Therefore, I
2
cooked an egg and left my sleepy child alone at home.
It was very late when I
3
. With just a brief hug and kiss for my child, I went stright into the room, without having dinner.
4
, when I jumped into my bed , all I heard and felt was broken sounds and
5
liquid. I opened my blanket, and there
6
the source of the “problem”—a broken bowl with noodels and a mess on the bed.
I was so
7
that I rushed into Loe’s room and gave him a good spanking. He
8
cried but didn’t ask for mercy, except a short explanation.
“Dad, I was
9
, but you were not back yet, so I wanted to cook some noodles. But I remembered that you
10
me not to touch or use the kitchen without any
11
around; therefore, I
12
the shower and used the hot water to cook the noodles. However, I was
13
that the noodles would turn cold, so I put it under the
14
to keep it warm
15
you return. But I forgot to remind you.”
I went towards my son to give him a(n)
16
hug and asked him to sleep. Then I began to
17
the mess on the bed. When everthing was done, I passed my son’s room, and saw that he was still
18
while looking at his mother’s photo. He cried not for the
19
on his little body. After this
20
, I have tried to give him both the love of dad and mum.

For Senior 3 students, choosing which college to attend can be the most exciting and thrilling time in their entire school lives. This is also true for an American girl
1
Melanie.
Melanie’s dad, James Porter, who is the chief of police for a Chicago suburb, wants Melanie to
2
nearby Northwestern University, where she’s
3
been accepted. But Melanie, 17, really wants to go to Georgetown University in Washington, D.C, where she’s been wait-listed.
When she gets an unexpected
4
from Georgetown University, she decides to
5
a road trip with a few
6
female friends. Melanie believes it is her first step
7
adulthood. But
8
the fact that this trip is “girls only”, James isn’t
9
with the prospect(期望) of his little princess
10
the world without him. He wants to protect her, so he joins the girls and hopes he can convince Melanie to go to Northwestern.
11
Melanie’s father only has the best of
12
, his presence
13
an endless series of comic encounters(遭遇).
After following their faulty device
14
into the backwoods (偏远地区), James and Melanie
15
Melanie’s little brother and his pet pig have been hiding in the spare compartment (隔间). What should be a simple tyre change
16
the expensive car rolling down a mountain, forcing them to hike to a nearby hotel…. All these disasters add spice(额外的趣味) to their trip while along the way a father and a daughter
17
get the chance to really
18
each other.
All parents,
19
they have college students or not, can relate to the bittersweet realization that their kids are growing up.
20
what Melanie and James have done, we all can find the delicate (脆弱的) balance between staying connected and letting go.
