If you have decided to take some English courses in the UK, there are some exams that you have to take to determine which classes you should be taking. The first exam that you have to take is the Key English Test, which determines how well you can handle speaking English on a day-to-day basis along with written English skills.

The KET has three parts. They are the basic reading and writing test, the listening exam and the speaking exam. Once you have passed this, you can take the PET exam, which stands for the Preliminary English Test. This test is just for people who already have both basic oral and written skills.

If you can read such items as newspapers, signs, magazines and books, you may be ready to take the next step. Try practicing your writing skills as well and when you think you have good enough writing skills, take this test. There are three sections to this test, the reading, writing and spoken English comprehension skills.

Once you have successfully passed the PET test, you can then move on to the more advanced classes and tests, like the FCE, which is the First Certificate Exam. This exam is harder and more advanced than the other tests. If your job depends on English speaking or writing, then this test is a must to pass. You will need to have passed the last two tests in order to take this one. You will also need to have more of a background when it comes to the English language. By passing the FCE, you have showed that your English speaking ability is of high level.

Scientists have searched for many years for a method to tell whether a volcano(火山)explosion will be small or large. Now, four scientists say they have discovered something in lava(熔岩)that will help do this. They did the research on Mount Unzen on the southern Japanese island of Kyushu.

Mount Unzen exploded in November, 1990. Since then, more explosions have killed 43 people and destroyed the homes of more than 2,000 others. The volcano is still active today.

The scientists say the lava of the volcano contains high level of an element(成份),which is a sign of the presence of the lava from deep in the earth, not from the surface. They say it shows that the lava coming directly from inside the earth is connected with huge explosions instead of smaller ones.

The scientists examined the lava from 18 explosions of Mount Unzen that took place during many thousands of years. They also studied the lava from other volcanoes in the area that are older than Mount Unzen. The lava studied came from both large and small explosions. The scientists found that large explosions contained more of the element than small ones. The scientists say if they had known this two years earlier, they could have warned the people living in the area near Mount Unzen and saved many lives.

Hey there,

So you’re about to spend four years of your life and tens of thousands of dollars of your parents’ money, and all you really know about college is that all of your friends are going. Do you ever stop to wonder why you’re going?

Relax. You’re making the right decision. First of all, you’ll discover what interests you by taking courses in many subjects. For example, it’s hard to decide if you want to be a painter if you’ve never painted any pictures; once you’re in a drawing-room on campus, you’ll know one way or the other. College is also a lot of fun—after you graduate, you’ll be working every weekday for 50 or so years. And remember that college graduates get about twice the income of those who never attended college.

Finding the right college can be difficult. Fortunately, Johnson Review is here to help you every step of the way.

Researching School. To us, the most important decision you’ll make is to choose the school that really fits you best---- not the one that is the most competitive or has the best-equipped rooms.

Applying to School. On JohnsonReview.com, you’ll find hundreds of actual college applications(申请) and links to many more.

Raising Your Scores. American College Test is one of the most important parts of the admissions(录取) course. It’s not the most important, though, and not everyone needs to prepare for the best. But, if you think you can do better, find the right course for better scores.

Paying for School. Most families need financial aid for the high cost of college. The problem is that financial aid seems difficult to get and many families get caught up in the price of college. However, if you really do your research, you’ll learn that there are many ways to get financial aid and that you can afford to attend any college, no matter the cost.

At the moment, it may be difficult to imagine, but many people believe that, by the year 2100, we will live on the planet Mars. Our own planet, Earth, is becoming more and more crowed and polluted. Luckily, we can start again and build a better world on Mars. Here is what life could be like.

First of all, transport should be much better. At present, our spaceships are too slow to carry large numbers of people to Mars — it takes months. However, by 2100, spaceship can travel at half the speed of light. It might take us two or three days to get to Mars!

Secondly, humans need food, water and air to live. Scientists should be able to develop plants that can be grown on Mars. These plants will produce the food and air that we need. However, can these plants produce water for us ? There is no answer now.

There is a problem for us to live on Mars. Mars pulls us much less than the Earth does. This will be dangerous because we could easily jump too high and fly slowly away into space. To prevent this, humans on Mars have to wear special shoes to make themselves heavier.

Life on Mars will be better than that on Earth in many ways, People will have more space. Living in a large building with only 10 bedrooms is highly possible. Many people believe that robot will do most of our work, so we have more time for our hobbies.

There will probably be no school on Mars. Every student will have a computer at home which is connected to the internet. They can study, do their homework and take exams in online schools. Each student will also have their own online teacher called “e-teacher”.

However, in some ways, life on Mars may not be better than that on the earth today. Food will not be the same — meals will probably be in the form of pills and will not be as delicious as they are today, Also, space travel will make many people feel ill. The spaceship will travel fast but the journey to Mars will probably be very uncomfortable.

I have said enough to you about the fact that no two native speakers of English speak it alike, but perhaps you are clever enough to ask me whether I myself speak it in the same way.

I must 36 at once that I do not. Nobody does. I am at present speaking to an audience of many thousands of gramophonists(学话者), many of 37 are trying hard to follow my words, syllable by syllable. If I were to speak to you as carelessly as I speak to my wife at home, this record would be 38 ; and if I were to speak to my wife at home as carefully as I am speaking to you, she would think that I was going mad.

As a public speaker I have to take care that every word I say is heard clearly at the far 39 of large halls containing thousands of people. “But at home, when I have to consider only my wife sitting 40 six feet of me at breakfast, I take so little pains with my speech that very often, 41 giving me the expected answer, she says, “Don’t mumble, and don’t turn you head away when you speak. I can’t hear a word you are saying.” And she also is a little careless. Sometimes I have to say “what” two or three times during our meal. And she 42 me of growing deafer and deafer, though she does not say so, because, as I am now over seventy, it might be true.

We all have company manners. If you were to 43 a strange family and to listen through the keyhole before going in---not that I would suggest for a moment that you are capable of doing such a very unladylike or ungentlemanlike thing; but still, if, in your enthusiasm for studying languages you could bring yourself to do it just for a few seconds to hear how a family speak to one another when there is 44 listening to them, and then walk into the room and hear how very 45 they speak in your presence, the change would surprise you. Even when our home manners are as good as our company manners---and of course they ought to be better---they are always different; and the difference is greater in speech than in anything else.
