Orlando Bloom was not a “good” student in school. Because of dyslexia, a reading and writing disorder (障碍), he struggled in many courses.

But Bloom says the dyslexia gave him the encouragement to overcome (克服) his difficulties.

In an interview with the Telegraph, the 32-year-old said the condition turned him into an ambitious person. “Because of the dyslexia, I always thought I had to work twice as hard as everyone else just to go the same distance,” he said. “That gave me a real kick as a kid and a lot of encouragement later on. In one sense, I guess that I'm grateful (感激的).”

Bloom is always preparing it thoroughly(充分地) when it comes to an audition (试镜) for a part. Perhaps this is what won him his role in the Lord of the Rings, a highly successful film trilogy (三部曲). “I really prepared it thoroughly for the audition and it's paid off,” he said.

It was the beginning of a fame that led to even greater success as a movie actor. But unlike some young people who aim for fame and fortune, Bloom believed an acting career “has been fulfilling (实现) his childhood fantasies”.

“Aged 9, I had this girlfriend and we used to have running races in the park to see who would be her boyfriend for the day. I wanted to be like Superman and fly in and rescue her. Once I realized Superman was an actor, I thought, ‘That's for me''.”

Bloom has always played special characters, like a knight (骑士) and a prince. It's difficult to picture him in everyman roles.

In October, Bloom was named Goodwill Ambassador (亲善大使) for the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF). His first task will be to film a documentary about the importance of clean water supplies.

In fact, Bloom started work for the UNICEF in 2007. On his first visit to Nepal, he was asked by students to take a small part in a play they were performing on local radio.

Do you love to cook? Are you feeling inspired by the movie Ratatouille or all the food-based reality TV shows on air today? If so, working as a chef may just be for you. However, before you rush out and sign up for cooking school, be aware that working as a chef isn't all very attractive. There's a long ladder to climb before you reach the rank of head chef at a top restaurant.

The first question that many future chefs have is whether or not they need to attend cooking school in order to become successful. The short answer is no – it is possible to develop your cooking skills on your own, or to work your way up the ladder from a position as a prep cook or line cook. However, if you are able to invest in a cooking school education, it's definitely a good idea. Cooking school will not only introduce you to other elements of a chef's career – like sanitation (卫生) and kitchen management – but will also help you develop connections that can help get your career off the ground.

Your first job as a chef will likely be at the bottom of the ladder. If you attended cooking school, you may find that you're able to start out as a prep cook in a nice restaurant, while chefs without this degree may find employment as short order or line cooks in smaller restaurants and diners. Expect to work hard in these positions – you'll put in long hours on your feet, carrying heavy pots and pans around a steaming kitchen. And don't expect to be paid much – chefs in these positions typically earn about $26,000-$32,000/year. However, it is in these positions that you'll have the chance to learn from more experienced chefs and to prove yourself ready for higher-level positions.

Competition for chef positions can be fierce, but if you've proven yourself to be talented and creative, you may be invited to fill a second chef or assistant chef position. You may also be able to use your experience to move from a smaller, unrenowned restaurant to a rated restaurant in the culinary capitols of the world. But don't expect that the work load will be reduced. If anything, these positions are more demanding that the entry-level positions, since you'll be responsible for more of the kitchen operations and for ensuring customer satisfaction. In addition, one common complaint of chefs working these positions is the hours – working popular meal shifts may leave little time for socializing outside of the restaurant.

With time and experience, you may eventually be able to earn the title of head chef at a well known restaurant or finally fulfill your dream of owning your own restaurant. It should go without saying that these opportunities are even more competitive and demanding than work at any other level of the chef hierarchy (层). You'll be expected to provide the creative vision for the restaurant, coming up with new and innovative dishes to please your patrons. In addition, you'll also be responsible for the overall management of your entire staff and all the kitchen operations. Because of all the stress involved in this career path, it isn't uncommon to see talented chefs leave the restaurant industry behind for calmer options, like catering or restaurant buffet management. However, most people in the industry will tell you that despite the utter chaos of their profession, there's nothing else they'd rather be doing.

But as we examine this quality in the context of effective self-management, we realize it’s usually not the dramatic, the visible, the once-in-a-lifetime, up-by-the-bootstraps (自立自强的) effort that brings lasting success. This special ability comes from learning how to use this great quality in the decisions we make every day.

The degree to which we have developed our independent will in our everyday lives is measured by our personal honesty. Honesty is, fundamentally, the value we place on ourselves. It’s our ability to make and keep promises to ourselves, to “walk our talk.”

Effective management is putting first things first. While leadership decides what “first things” are, it is management that puts them first, day-by-day, moment-by-moment. Management is discipline (training to be self-controlled), carrying it out.

Discipline obtains from belief — belief in a set of values, belief in an overriding (最主要的) purpose, to a long-term or short-term goal that must be carried out.

In other words, if you are an effective manager of yourself, your discipline comes from within; it is a function of your independent will. You are a follower of your own deep values and their source. And you have the will, the quality to control your feelings and moods rather than depend on others or have your work half done.

In modern society there is a great deal of argument about competition. Some value it highly, believing that it takes responsibility for social progress and prosperity. Others say that competition is bad; that it sets one person against another; that it leads to unfriendly relationship between people.

 

 I have taught many children who hold the belief that their self-worth relies on how well they perform at tennis and other skills. For them, playing well and winning are often life-and-death affairs. In their single-minded pursuit if success, the development of many other human qualities is sadly forgotten.

 

 However, while some seem to be lost in the desire to succeed, others take an opposite attitude. In a culture which values only the winner and pays no attention to the ordinary players, they strongly blame competition. Among the strongest are youngsters who have suffered under competitive pressures from their parents or society. Teaching these young people, I often observe in them a desire to fail. They seem to seek failure by not trying to win or achieve success. By not trying, they always have an excuse: “I may have lost, but it doesn’t matter because I really didn’t try.” What is not usually admitted by themselves is the belief that if they had really tried and lost, that would mean a lot. Such a loss would be a measure of their worth. Clearly, this belief is the same as that of the true competitors who try to prove themselves. Both are based on the mistaken belief that one’s self-respect relies on how well one performs in comparison with others. Both are afraid of not being valued. Only as this basic and often troublesome fear begins to dissolve (缓解) can we discover a new meaning in competition.
