The other day, I happened to meet someone I hadn’t seen for many years. I couldn’t believe the change in him. In fact, he didn’t even seem like the   1  person.

When I first knew Bill, back in   2  , he was one of the most carefree(无忧无虚)people I had ever   3  . He was always ready to  have a party. He thought   4  of going out for beer at three o’clock in the morning or driving 50 miles to see an old   5  he really liked. Bill and I were in the same class in college, and   6  was never dull when he was   7  . With him there was one wild   8  after another. Sometimes I wonder how we   9  to study for our exams.

Last week I was in Houston on business and I ran into Bill in the bar at the hotel.  10  , I wasn’t even sure it was   11  . Was this short – haired businessman really the same person? I wasn’t really sure until I came near him but it indeed was Bill. Now he works for a bank. He   12  most of the evening about his job, his new car and his house. How he had changed! Back when we were in college, the  13  thing Bill cared about was possessions. Now they seemed to be his main   14  . Although I have changed quite a bit myself, somehow, I never   15  Bill changing so much. My image of him   16  the one I had formed   17  the time when we were college students together.

I suppose it’s   18  to expect people to remain the same, especially   19  I have changed so much myself. But I must say that I enjoyed the old Bill much more than the new Bill. Maybe he   20  the same way about me.

Erik Weihenmayer wants to climb Mount Everest. He loves to climb, and there is no place greater for climbers than the Himalayan peak of 29,035 feet, the world’s highest mountain.

Weihenmayer is blind. He has been blind since age 13, when an eye disease robbed him of his sight. His new book, Touch the Top of the  World, A blind Man’s Journey to Climb Farther than the Eye Can See, describes his blindness and climbing. He is the first blind man to attempt Everest. The team reached base camp at 17,800 feet last Wednesday and begins its climb Saturday. If all goes well, Weihenmayer will reach the top on or about May 15.

“I’m not just some token blind guy, ” Weihrnmayer, aged 32, said hours before he left Los Angeles on Friday for Katmandu, Nepal. “I put my life in my fellow climbers’ hands, and they put their lives in my hands. It’s an honour to reach that state.”

“I want to experience the sense of adventure. Blindness has nothing to do with that. But a message of the climb is that a blind person can join a team and climb the highest mountain in the world.”

Weihenmayer has climbed the highest peaks on four continents: North America’s Mount McKinley, South America’s Aconcagua, Africa’s Kilimanjaro and Antarctica’s Vinson Massif. He is an expert rock and ice climber, having scaled EL Capitan in Yosemite National Park. When he was 16, he attended a school that taught blind people to be independent. One day, a group went rock climbing. “I really liked it,” Weihenmayer said. “You can problem – solve. It is pretty sense in your inner mind. People didn’t think blind people could go out and become expert rock climbers.”

A serious threat to farmers in many parts of the world is erosion. Erosion occurs if a large area of land is cleared of trees and is then badly treated by the farmers. The rain and winds may gradually wash away, or blow away, much of the topsoil. When this happens, crops of wheat or corn become weaker and weaker until nothing grows well. If erosion continues, it will turn good land into a desert.

In the past, when erosion appeared, farmers sometimes moved to a new place to farm. Sometimes they could not move, but continued to try to grow food in the unhealthy soil. This caused them to sink into poverty. Soon some people realized that there was little rich, fertile soil in the world, government began to try to stop erosion.

One of the first experiments to stop erosion began in the United States in 1933. The experiment was carried out in the area of the Tennessee River. Floods and had farming in this area had ruined(毁坏)land that had once been rich. As a result, most of the people living around the Tennessee River were very poor.

The government built big dams across the river and stored the water for use during the dry season when there was no rain. The government workers also helped farmers to fertilize their soil and to learn new farming methods which could stop erosion.

At the beginning, the farmers were not interested. But soon,  good healthy crops began to appear on the land where new methods where used. Ten years after the extremely prosperous, the great success of this experiment had led similar projects in the other parts of the world.
