Seventeen–year–old Rivertown teenager, John Janson, was honoured at the Lifesaver Awards last night for carrying out lifesaving first aid on his neighbor after a shocking knife   1  .

John was presented with his award at a ceremony which recognized the   2   of ten people who have saved the life of   3  .

John had been studying in his room when he heard Anne Slade   4  . When he and his father rushed outside, they   5   that Anne Slade, mother of three, had been stabbed (刺)   6   with a knife by her ex – boyfriend. The man ran from the   7   and left Ms Slade lying in her front garden   8   very heavily. Her hands had almost been cut from her body.

It was John’s quick   9   and knowledge of first aid that saved Ms Slade’s life. He immediately asked a number of the  10   people for bandages(绷带), but when nobody could put their hands on any, his father got some tea towels(毛巾) and   11   from their house. John used these to dress the most severe  12   to Ms Slade’s hands. He slowed the bleeding by applying pressure to the wounds until the   13   and ambulance(救护车) arrived.

“I’m   14   of what I did but I was just doing what I’d been  15  ” John said.

John had taken part in the Young Lifesaver Scheme at his high school. When   16  John. Mr Alan Southerton. Director of the Young Lifesaver Scheme, said, “There is no doubt that John’s quick thinking and the first aid   17  he had learnt at school saved Ms Slade’s life. It shows that a simple knowledge of first aid can make a real   18  .”

John and the nine other lifesavers also attended a   19   reception yesterday hosted by the Prime Minister before  20   their awards last night.

On Thursday afternoon Mrs. Clarke, dressed for going out, took her handbag with her money and her key in it, pulled the door behind her to lock it and went to the Over 60s Club. She always went there on Thursdays. It was a nice outing for an old woman who lived alone.

At six o’clock she came home, let herself in and at once smelt cigarette smoke. Cigarette smoke in her house? How? Had somebody got in? She checked the back door and the windows. All were locked as usual. There was no sign of forced entry.

Over a cup of tea she wondered whether someone might have a key that fitted her front door - “a master key” perhaps. So she stayed at home the following Thursday. Nothing happened. Was anyone watching her movements? On the Thursday after that she went out at her usual time, dressed as usual, but she didn’t go to the club. Instead she took a short cut home again, letting herself in through her garden and the back door. She settled down to wait.

It was just after four o’clock when the front door bell rang. Mrs. Clarke was making a cup of tea at the time. The bell rang again, and then she heard her letter-box being pushed open. With the kettle of boiling water in her hand, she moved quietly towards the front door. A long piece of wire appeared through the letter-box, and then a hand. The wire turned and caught around the knob(球形把手) on the door-lock. Mrs. Clarke raised the kettle and poured the water over the hand. There was a shout outside, and the skin seemed to drop off the fingers like a glove. The wire fell to the floor, till hand was pulled back, and Mrs. Clarke heard the sound of running feet.

Unless action is taken immediately, there is a chance that all the oceans of the world will be dead by the year 2010. How can this possibly happen?

We have already seen that people allow all sorts of waste products to flow into the sea. It is almost impossible to measure how much waste water and industrial waste end up in our oceans, but we can find out how much oil is poured into them legally and illegally. It is illegal to pour oil into the sea close to the shore, but when a ship is many miles out to sea there are no such rules. Scientists have different ideas as to the amount of oil put into the sea, but the lowest figure for oil poured in European waters alone is about 200,000 tons every year. Some people say the figure could be ten times as high.

It is not only our coasts that suffer from oil pollution. Among other things, many shellfish - oysters (牡蛎) and mussels(贻贝), for example - now have high amounts of poisonous substances. Next time you have shellfish to eat, how can you be sure that they are free from oil pollution? You cannot see the effects and you cannot taste them, either. It is really quite a problem.

I dreamed I had an interview with God.

“So you would like to interview me?” God – asked. “If you have the time,” I said. “My time is eternity (永恒).” God smiled, “What questions do you have in mind for me?” “What surprises you most about humankind?” God answered, “That they get bored with childhood, they rush to grow up, and then long to be children again. That they lose their health to make money… and then lose their money to restore their health. That by thinking anxiously about the future, they forget the present, such that they live in neither the present nor the future. That they live as if they will never die, and die as though they had never lived.” God’s hand took mine and we were silent for a while.

And then I asked, “As a parent, what are some of life’s lessons you want your children to learn?” He answered, “To learn they cannot make anyone love them. All they can do is to let themselves love others. To learn that it is not good to compare themselves to others. To learn to forgive by practicing forgiveness. To learn that it only takes a few seconds to open profound wounds in those they love, and it can take many years to heal them. To learn that a rich person is not one who has the most, but is one who needs the least. To learn that there are people who love them dearly, but simply have not yet learned how to express or show their feelings. To learn that two people can look at the same thing and see it differently. To learn that it is not enough that they forgive one another, but they must also forgive themselves.”

“Thank you for your time,” I said humbly. “Is there anything else you would like your children to know?” God smiled and said: “Just to know that I am always here.”
