Young Buffett stepped into the stock market at eleven but earned only $5.The  15   taught him one of the virtues in investing: patience.

After graduating from university, Buffett  16  his venture (冒险) with stocks with his childhood earnings and money from friends. How old is “old”? The answer has changed over the years. Two hundred years ago you were old at 35.That was the average life expectancy then. As medical knowledge advanced, the average life span increased to 45 at the turn of last century. In 1950, 70-year-olds were really old. Today, a healthy 70-year-old is looking forward to many more active years.

So, how old is old? The answer is one you’ve heard many times, from all sorts of people. “You are as old (or young) as you feel.” The calendar simply tells you how many years you have lived. Your body tells you how well you’ve lived.

“Youth,” wrote an author, “is not a time of life—it is a state of mind. Nobody grows old by living a number of years; people grow old by deserting their ideals.”

Old is a point of view. Alice Brophy, when she was with the New York City Commission for the Aging, said, “It annoys me when people say, ‘Gee, you look young for your age.’ What does that mean? Is there some model that you’re supposed to look a certain way at 65 and 75 and 85?   You know you can die old at 30 and live young at 80.”

Here are some of the more common myths—and the facts.

Myth: Most older people are in poor health.

Fact: Not so. There are neither biological nor physiological reasons to connect poor health with growing older. Older people are more likely to be affected with illness and physical disabilities than you are, but old age itself is not a disease. It is possible to remain physically fit throughout your life.

Myth: When you get old, you become senile(衰老的).

Fact: Older minds can be as bright as young minds. Senility is a sign of disease; it is not part of the normal aging process. No evidence was found to show that aging was associated with a decline in intellectual performance, in generally healthy people.

Myth: Older people are rigid, unable to change.

Fact: Older people are as diverse in their life-styles and flexibility as are young and middle-aged people. Despite the many stresses they deal with—death of loved ones or job, financial, and domestic problems—they cope miraculously well. Older people give up smoking and break other bad habits just as successfully as younger people.

The car has many advantages. Above all, it offers people freedom to go where they want to go, when they want to go there. The basic purpose of a car is to get from point A to point B as cheaply, quickly, and safely as possible. However, to most people, cars are also personal dream machines that serve as symbols of power, success, speed, excitement, and adventure. In addition, much of the world’s economy is built on producing cars and supplying roads, services, and repairs for those cars. Half of the world’s paychecks are cars related. In the United States, one of every six dollars spent and one of every six nonfarm jobs are connected to cars or related industries, such as oil, steel, rubber, plastics, car services , and highway construction.

In spite of their advantages, cars have many harmful effects on human lives and on air, water, land, and wildlife resources. The car may be the most destructive machine ever invented. Riding in cars is one of the most dangerous things we do in our daily lives. Since 1885, when Karl Benz built the first car, almost 18 million people have been killed by cars. Every year, cars and trucks worldwide kill an average of 250,000 people. Half of the world’s people will be involved in the tragic car accident--- at some time during their lives.

In 1907, the average speed of horse-drawn cars through New York City was 18.5 kilometers per hour. Today, cars and trucks with the power of 100 to 300 horses travel very slowly along New York City streets at an average speed of 8 kilometers per hour.

Streets that used to be for people are now for cars. Pedestrians and bicyclists in the streets suffer a lot from noise, pollution, stress, and danger.

Cars are the largest source of air pollution. In the United States, they produce at least 50% of the country’s air pollution. What do you think should be done?

D.What effect do the cars have on the environment?

2.We can know from the passage that cars        .

A.play an important part in the world’s economy

       B.are becoming less dangerous

C.will produce less air pollution in the future

D.are the most dangerous machines ever invented

3.Which of the following statements can be inferred from the passage?

A.Today, there are no horse-drawn vehicles in New York City.

B.It takes longer to get around New York City today than in the past.

C.In 1907, the streets in New York City were wider and in better condition.

D.People will use horse-drawn cars in the near future.

4.What would be the best title for the passage?

A.Cars---Number One Killer                  B.The Effect of Cars on the Air

For more than twenty years scientists have been searching for signs of life on other planets. Most of these searches have been done over the radio, a scanning of the electromagnetic waves(电磁波)that come to us from outer space. Scientists also have sent radio and television messages, as well as messages on spacecraft traveling through space, hoping that someone may receive such messages.

The most extensive search so far involves using powerful radio telescopes to listen to signals from about 1,000 stars, all within 100 light years of Earth. In addition, astronomers will scan the entire sky to “listen” for radio messages from more distant stars. Scientists are looking for any signal that stands out from the background noise, such as a strong tone that could have traveled great distances.

Of the 200 billion stars in the Milky Way galaxy(星系), scientists find that five percent are like our sun. Of these solar systems, perhaps half of them have a planet like Earth. Such a planet would be a reasonable distance from the star for temperatures to be right for the evolution of life. Based on the inhabitable planets in our galaxy, most scientists agree that chances are likely that one or more of these planets support some life.

However, many scientists wonder whether intelligent life exists on other planets. Some believe that twenty years of searching shows that no one is out there. They say that the evolution of intelligence similar to ours is unlikely. Insects, perhaps the most evolutionarily successful of all living things on Earth, for instance, could not communicate over radio waves.

Other scientists believe that our search has been neither long enough nor extensive enough to rule out(拒绝考虑) the possibility that intelligent life exists in our galaxy. Although our solar system is only about five billion years old, our galaxy is about 20 billion years old. In that time some scientists think it is likely that civilizations much more advanced than ours have developed. Perhaps these civilizations are sending us no signals; perhaps we have not recognized the signals they have sent us. If we hope to find intelligent life, these scientists believe that we have to keep looking.

1.According to the passage, ____stars might have a planet like Earth.

       A.all                       B.5 billion               C.10 billion             D.200 billion

2.The first paragraph in this passage is mainly about            .

A.how scientists are looking for signs of life on other planets

B.why scientists are looking for signs of life on other planets

C.how to use electromagnetic waves to search outer space

D.what scientists have done with radio and television messages

3.Which of these statements is TRUE based on the information in the passage?

A.The earth is one of the oldest planets in our galaxy.

B.Most scientists believe that there is intelligent life on other planets.

C.Scientists are trying different ways to find signs of life on other planets.

D.Scientists think that the evolution of intelligence on other planets is similar to that on earth.

4.Why do some scientists think there might be more advanced civilization on other planets?

A.Because some planets in our galaxy are much older than Earth.

B.Because civilization on earth is likely to have more time to develop.

C.Because scientists prove it with the aid of the scanning of the electromagnetic waves.

D.Because there are many more stars on other planets.

Students in America have to get required credits (学分) in order to graduate. The average workload at my school, Hotchkiss, is five courses. But at a school full of overachievers (成绩超过预料的学生), it’s very common to see people taking six or more classes.

I am currently taking six and half classes, including Advanced Placement (AP) Physics, Senior English, AP art, piano (with music history and theory), chorus, US history and AP economics. AP is the more advanced level of courses. It's usually equivalent to first year college courses.

By taking the AP exams in May every year, high school students in America get credits for college. In the US, most science classes are designed for one year. For example, we are covering the same amount of material in my AP physics class as we did in three years in China. The difference is that here, we get a broad education without studying the subjects in depth. Because of the fast speed, students are expected to study more independently.

Teachers won’t go through everything in class. But if you want to have an in-depth study of a subject, you could design your own independent study with an instructor.

As part of our graduation requirements, every student not only has to take US history for one year but also has to write a research paper on a certain topic. Thus, during the whole winter term, my close friends became the library and five thick books on the historic meeting between US President Richard Nixon and Chairman Mao in 1972.My research paper turned out to be 13 pages long and I made a lot of note cards in the process of researching. We took classes on how to write scholarly essays, how to narrow down a topic, how to find sources and how to cite (引证) properly.

In America, academic honesty is considered incredibly important. Paraphrasing (改述) a scholarly work without proper citation (引用) is regarded as academic dishonesty and may get you into trouble with the school’s discipline committee.

C.In American high schools teachers will explain everything clearly to students.

D.In America, when it comes to a research paper, proper citation is not important.

3.From the passage we can infer that the author is a (an) ______ student.

       A.diligent                B.lazy                    C.excellent             D.clever
