When I moved into an empty dorm for the first time two years ago, I was certain of a few things. Firstly, I realized that I didn’t _1_ anybody at the school. Secondly, I knew that I wanted to work hard at my lessons and learn something useful. And thirdly, I wanted to have a good time with new classmates, without my parents around.

The first realization frightened me in the beginning. But that _2 _quickly disappeared. It was the other two goals that ended up _3_ my difficulties. I knew that it was hard to devote enough time to class and to social efforts. But I wanted to succeed in both. I knew this would be a _4_, but I didn’t realize _5_ until classes began.

I got on well with the other girls who lived in my dorm. Often, instead of finishing my homework _6_ it was due(应交的期限), I went upstairs and had ice cream with my neighbour. I always finished it the next day between classes. I knew _7_ wasn’t very good and the grade I _8_ showed my lack of effort.

I was aware that I needed to find some sort of balance. So I created a schedule that would _9_ my time up between going to class, doing homework, and relaxing. It seemed like a good idea, but I was only able to follow it for a few days. A schedule like that was too much pressure.

So I tried another _10_. Each week I made a list of everything I had to get done during that week. Then, under the list of things I had to get done, I made a list of things I could do if I had time.

This is the method I have used since then. I’m glad that I’ve learned to balance things and it has helped prepare me for what is to come after graduation.

The Golden Gate Bridge joins the beautiful city of san Francisco with the suburbs (郊区) to the north. Each day, about one hundred thousand cars cross the bridge, taking people to and from the city. More than half of them cross the bridge during the morning and evening rush hours, as a result, the trip is not pleasant.

Now, however, there is at least one group of happy commuters ( 经常往返者). These are the people who travel under the bridge instead of on it. They go to work by boat and enjoy it so much that most of them say they will never go by car again.

The boat they take is the large, quiet, comfortable “Golden Gate”. Commuters can enjoy the sun on the boat. In the morning they can have breakfast in the coffee shop, and in the evening they can have a drink in the bar while they are looking at San Francisco’s famous scene and the nearby hills.

The trip takes only thirty minutes and is not expensive. But best of all, being on a boat seems to make people feel more friendly towards each other. Two commuters who met on the “Golden Gate” have already got married.

Because the boat had been so successful, there are plans to use other, still larger boats. There is also a plan for a high-speed boat that will make the trip in only fifteen minutes. Not everyone is happy about that. “A lot of people don’t want to get the trip faster,” said one commuter, “They feel that an hour is just enough time to rest.”

Since we are social beings, the quality of our lives depends in large measure on our interpersonal(人与人之间的)relationships. One strength of the human condition is our possibility to give and receive support from one another under stressful conditions. Social support makes up of the exchange of resources among people based on their interpersonal ties. Those of us with strong support systems appear better able to deal with major life changes and daily problems. People with strong social ties live longer and have better health than those without such ties. Studies over types of illnesses, from depression to heart disease, show that the presence of social support helps people defend themselves against illness, and the absence of such support makes poor health more likely.

Social support cushions stress in a number of ways. First, friends, relatives and coworkers may let us know that they value us. Our self-respect is strengthened when we feel accepted by others in spite of (尽管) our faults and difficulties. Second, other people often provide us with informational support. They help us to define (叙述明白)and understand our problems and find solutions to them. Third, we typically find social companionship(友谊)  supportive. Taking part in free-time activities with others helps us to meet our social needs while at the same time distracting (转移,使……分心) us from our worries and troubles. Finally, other people may give us instrumental support---money aid, material resources, and needed services --- that reduces stress by helping us resolve and deal with our problems.
