When Dave was eighteen, he bought a second-hand car for £200 so that he could travel to and from work more 1 than by bus. It worked quite well for a few years, but then it got so old, and it was costing him 2 much in repairs that he decided that he had better 3 it.

He asked among his friends to see if anyone was particularly   to buy a cheap car, but they all knew that it was falling to pieces, so  5   of them had any desire to buy it.

Dave's friend Sam saw that he was when they met one evening, and said, “What's   7   , Dave?” Dave told him and Sam answered, “Well, what about advertising it in the paper? You may   8   more for it that way than the cost of the advertisement!” Thinking that Sam's   9   was sensible, he put an advertisement in an evening paper, which read: “For sale: small car,   10   very little petrol, only two owners. Bargain at £50.”

For two days after the advertisement first appeared, there was no   11  . But then on Saturday evening a man rang up and said he would like to   12   him about the car. “All right,” Dave said, feeling happy. He asked the man whether ten o'clock the next morning would be   13   or not. “Fine,” the man said. “And I'll   14   my wife. We intend to go for a ride in it to   15   it.”

The next morning, at ten a quarter, Dave parked the car in the square outside his front door,   16   to wait there for the person who had   17   his advertisement. Even Dave had to   18   that the car really looked like a wreck. Then soon after he had got the car as   19   as it could be, a police car stopped just behind him and a policeman got out. He looked at Dave's car and then said, “Have you reported this   20    to us yet, sir?”

Our 16-year-old daughter started to smoke last Christmas. It killed me to see that lovely girl with a cigarette(香烟) in her mouth. I told her how I felt. Martha continued to smoke, saying, “It's my life,” and so on. I told her if she didn't stop smoking, I wouldn't send her to college. She agreed to give it up.

Last night there was cigarette smell on Martha's breath. She had to say she had broken her word. Now I must do what I've said to punish(惩罚) her.

Martha is unusually bright and wants to teach children. I'm working full-time to put her elder sister through school and would do the same for Martha. My husband's pay is good, but with prices going up all the time we could never educate the girls unless I kept on working.

My theory(理论) is that if smoking is more important to Martha than college, I'm a fool to work to put her through college.

1. Why did the mother feel sad?

A. Because her daughter failed to go to college.

B. Because her daughter tried to kill her.

C. Because her daughter promised to smoke no more.

D. because her daughter got used to smoking.

2. The mother warned that if Martha didn't give up smoking, she would __________.

A. refuse to give Martha any money

B. not be Martha's mother

C. refuse to pay for Martha's college education

D. not let Martha teach children

3. What did Martha really do after mother warned her?

A. She failed to keep her promise.

B. She kept her promise.

C. She managed to give up smoking.

D. She broke something her mother give her.

4. The mother thought that ______.

A. she was a foolish woman working hard

B. it was right for her to pull Martha out of college

C. smoking was too bad a habit (习惯) for a young girl

D. Martha would rather lose her life than stop smoking

When the weather is hot, you go to a lake or an ocean. When you are near a lake or an ocean, you feel cold. Why? The sun makes the earth hot but it can not make the water very hot. Although the air over the earth becomes hot, the air over the water stays cool. The hot air over the earth goes up. Then the cool air over the water moves in and takes the place of the hot air. When it moves in, you feel the wind. And the wind makes you cool.

Of course, scientists can not answer all of our questions. If we ask, “Why is the ocean full of salt?” Scientists will say that the salt comes from rocks. When a rock gets very hot or very cold, it cracks (断裂). Rain falls into the cracks. The rain then carries the salt into the ocean. But then we ask, “What happens to the salt in the ocean?” The ocean does not get more salty every year. Scientists are not sure about the answer to this question.

We know a lot about our world. But there are still many answers that we don’t have and we are curious about.

One day I took several pairs of shoes to the shoemaker to be mended. After a week I went to take them back. Four months later, my husband and I were invited to dinner. I took out a pair of shoes. I hadn't worn them since they were mended. I put one shoe on my right foot, and then I put the other on my left. But I felt that the other one was on the wrong foot. I took both shoes off for a closer look. They were nearly the same style (式样), colour and size, but each was for the right foot. Then I thought of the shoemaker. Though I was sure he wouldn't remember me after such a long time, I called him. "Thank goodness you called me at last!"  He said happily. "An angry woman has been troubling me for months!"

My topic is fashion(时装). Fashion is important to all of us. Now we are all wearing school uniforms(校服). When we go home, what do we do? We change into other clothes. If we are going out, we like to wear fashionable clothes. So my first object is this blouse. It looks beautiful, doesn’t it? It is the most expensive piece of clothing, and I love it. It cost over $600. You may say that it is too expensive, but luckily I can afford it. The more you spend, the better the quality is. So you see, fashion is quite important to me, I admire it.

However, I’m not as fond of fashion as my elder brother. Last summer, my parents took us both to London. They wanted to show us some famous sights. But my brother Gary did not appreciate the old buildings. He just wanted to spend all his time in the big shopping arcades(拱廊), searching for the coolest pair of trousers! For him, fashion was more important than culture. These are the trousers he bought. Were they worth the expensive of a trip to London to buy these? I don’t think so. I think it was a waste of time and money.

We must, however, remember that fashion is a very big business. Changes in fashion can create or lose jobs. As an example, I have bought this blonde(淡黄色的) wig(假发) to show you. Do you like it? It belongs to one of my mother’s friends. She told me that in the 1960s, it was fashionable for western women to wear wigs. But a few years later fashions changed and women wore wigs much less often. Then the wig factories closed down and hundreds of workers lost their jobs.
