Just home from work, Daddy stopped in the kitchen where Mother and I were preparing supper. From the look on his face, we knew something was  1  him.

“Mr. Roth is worse,” he said. “The doctor says it’s only a   2  of time now. The old man can  3  his pain, but not the long hours he has to spend along. His eyes are  4  bad that he can’t read, and he doesn’t get much  5  . He keeps begging for a big dog to be his companion,   6  he can reach out and touch as he sits in his wheelchair in the sun.”

“Why don’t theyhim a dog?” I asked.

“Honey, with Mr. Roth in the hospital so much of time, there are a lot of  8  . There isn’t enough money.”

“They could go to the animal shelter and get one,” I  9  .

“Yes,” Daddy said. “I suppose they could. But it has to be a   10  dog, one they can trust to be gentle. Not all big dogs are.”

After supper, I  11  back where my big German shepherd(牧羊犬), Dan, was dozing under a tree. He jumped up and ran to meet me  12  he always did when I came into sight. There were no other 12-year-old girls in our neighborhood, so I   13  Dan for companionship. When I rode my bicycle, he ran behind me; when I roller-skated on the sidewalk, he trotted(小跑)behind. It had been that way since Daddy   14  him home four years before.

Now, I couldn’t forget Daddy’s words in the kitchen. I threw my arms around Dan’s neck and buried my face   15  his stiff hair.

“I love you,” I whispered to him. “I’d be  16  without you, but …oh, Dan, I know what I should do,   17  I don’t want to do it .”

I thought about Mr. Roth. He was old, sick and almost  18  . It seemed to me that he was just about out of blessings. I got up   19  . I knew what I had to do, and if I didn’t do it right now, I’d   20  myself out of it.

I went to my father and said, “Mr. Roth can borrow Dan.” Tears started down my face.

Last week, Carol Hill wrote to us about her sleep problem:

I am a 16-year-old high school student and ever since I was 11, I have had difficulty falling asleep. When I go to bed at night, I lie awake for hours. I hate the sound of my alarm clock going off in the morning, almost always falling asleep again after I hear it.

During school, I feel sleepy all the time, and sometimes I have to battle to stay awake.

Although I am generally a straight-A student and my teachers are happy with my work, my   inability to sleep is seriously affecting my studies.

By the time I get home from school, I am so worn out that I fall asleep while I’m doing my

homework, which just exacerbates the problem. People are very sympathetic, and always telling me that “counting sheep is a good way to fall asleep.” But it is not helpful at all. If you don’t have this problem, you don’t know how annoying it can be.

And this is what the readers answered:

Hello Carol!

I am 18 years old and I suffered in pretty much the same way as you in High School. I couldn’t concentrate or pay attention because I was always tired. At first, doctors thought I had learning difficulties! Thankfully, I met a specialist in sleep disorders and he gave me a simple herbal remedy(草药)which helped me a great deal. After just 10 days, my sleeping patterns were back to normal and it continued even after I stopped taking the remedy. My advice is to find a doctor who knows about sleep problems. Good luck!

Larry

Hi Carol!

Your symptoms are the same as my daughter’s. When she was 11, she started walking up with a start time and time again during the night. She was always worn out and often had black circles under her eyes. Finally we went to a sleep research laboratory and a doctor discovered that she had a problem with her tonsils which was affecting her breathing and suggested a tonsillectomy(扁桃体切除术). It worked! Now she falls asleep seconds after putting her head on her pillow. I strongly advise you to look into your problem at a sleep laboratory! Good luck!

Janine

It was the small hours of the morning when we reached London Airport. I had phoned London

20090327

from Amsterdam, and there was a hired car to meet, but there was one more unfortunate happening before I reached my flat. In all my travels I have never, but for that once, been required by the British customs to open a single bag or to do more than state that I carried no goods to declare. It was, of course, my fault; the extreme tiredness and nervous tension of the journey had destroyed my diplomacy (处事之道). I was, for whichever reason, so tired that I could hardly stand, and to the question, “have you read this?” I replied with extreme foolishness, “yes, hundreds of times.”

“And you have nothing to declare?”

“Nothing.”

“How long have you been out of this country?”

“About three months.”

“And during that time you  have bought nothing?”

“Nothing but what is on the list I have given you.”

He seemed momentarily at a loss, but then he attacked. The attack, when it came, was completely unexpected.

“Where did you get that watch?”

I could have kicked myself, two days before, when playing water games with a friend in the bath, I had forgotten to take off my ROLEX OYSTER, and it had, not unnaturally, stopped. I had gone into the market and bought, for only six pence, an ugly time piece that made a strange noise. It had stopped twice, without any reason, during the journey.

I explained, but I had already lost face. I produced my own watch from a pocket, and added that I should be grateful if he would confiscate(没收)the replacement.

“It is not a question of confiscation, ” he said, “there is a fine for failing to declare dutiable goods. And now may I please examine that Rolex?”

It took another quarter of an hour to persuade him that the Rolex was not contraband(走私品); then he began to search my luggage.

Art is considered by many people to be no more than a decorative(装饰)means of giving

pleasure. This is not always the case, however; at times, art may be seen to have a purely functional side as well. Such could be said of the sandpaintings of the Navaho Indians of the American Southwest; these have a medicinal as well as an artistic purpose.

According to Navaho traditions, one who suffers from either a mental or a physical illness has in some way disturbed or get in touch with the supernatural-perhaps a certain animal, a ghost, or the dead. To break away from this, the sick person or one of his relatives will employ a medical man called a “singer” to perform a curing ceremony which will attract a powerful supernatural being. During the ceremony, which may last from 2 to 9 days, the “singer” will produce a sandpainting on the floor. On the last day of the ceremony, the patient will sit on this sandpainting and the “singer” will rub(按摩)the. sick or injured parts of the patient’s body with sand from a specific figure in the sandpainting. In this way the patient absorbs the power of that particular supernatural being and becomes strong. After the ceremony, the sandpainting is destroyed so its power won’t harm anyone.

The art of sandpainting is handed down from old “singers”. The materials used are easily found where the Navaho settle: brown, red, yellow, and white sandstone, which is ground(研磨)much as corn is made into flour. The “singer” holds a small amount of this sand in his hand and lets it flow between his fingers onto a clean, flat surface on the floor, with a steady hand and great patience. He is thus able to create designs of stylized people, snakes and other creatures that have power in the Navaho belief system. The traditional Navaho doesn’t allow copying sandpaintings, since he believes the supernatural powers that taught him the craft(技艺)have forbidden this; however, such reproductions can in fact be purchased today in tourist shops in Arizona and New Mexico. These are done by either Navaho Indians or by other people who wish to preserve this craft.

1.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

2.How did the “singer” treat the patient according to the passage?

A.By passing his supernatural power on to the patient.

B.By applying a magic substance to the patient’s body.

C.By rubbing the patient’s sick parts with sand from a sandpainting figure.

       D.By destroying the sandpainting figure.

3.The traditional Navaho does not allow copying of sandpaintings because      .

A.anything copied has no effect                B.the craft only belongs to the supernatural

C.it’s against Navaho belief system           D.the copying may do harm to other Navahos

4.That the reproductions of sandpaintings are now commercially available shows      .

China’s human spaceflight program plans to build on the success of the Shenzhou VII mission(任务). The country will set up a simple space lab by 2011 and a station nine years later.

The space lab will be manned for short periods. Scientists will use it to learn docking and other skills needed for long-term tasks including possibly landing on the moon.

The United States and Russia have set up space labs since the 1970s. scientists use space labs to study space and to do experiments they cannot do on Earth.

We all know that Earth has gravity. And the force cannot be changed on the ground. But in space everything and everyone will be in a weightless condition. It is like when you are parachuting(降落伞降落)in space, but there’s no destination. So astronauts float in the spaceships , and when they drop something, that floats too. Weightlessness provides scientists the opportunity to explore gravity’s effects on the biological and physical systems.

In 1973, the United States launched its first space lab, Skylab, into orbit. Skylab carried out experiments in human behavior to study the effects of long time periods on the human body when in space.

They also learned much about solar flares(太阳耀斑). Solar flares happen on the sun when energy explodes. The solar flares affect the areas around the Earth and when strong enough, will cut satellite communications.

Now astronauts in space labs carry out various experiments. The experiments are created by scientists around the world, but the crew on board perform and record them. These experiments include weightlessness on bacteria, the human nervous system, plants and eggs.

A NASA astronaut, Shannon Lucid once performed experiments on egg development in a space lab in 1996. The results were compared with the same egg development phases on Earth. The eggs had more abnormalities than those on Earth, but then scientists found out it was because of a radiation effect rather than weightlessness.

1.The passage mainly talks about      .

       A.space stations                                      B.space labs

       C.solar flares                                          D.weightlessness effects

2.What does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 7 refer to ?

A.scientists around the world                   B.human communications

C.the crew on board                                                               D.the various experiments

3.From the passage, we can conclude that      .

A.China will have a space station in the future

B.the Shenzhou VII mission is cancelled

C.the United States launched Skylab in 1973

D.scientists will soon land on the moon

Every year, about 600 monkeys are invited to eat fruits and vegetables during an annual feast(盛宴)in Thailand.   1   It is said that Rama once rewarded his friend Hanuman, the Monkey King, with some land. Organizers of the annual Monkey Buffet use more than 3,000kg of fruits and vegetables to prepare for the feast.

This event is held in England. Though it might sound very gentle, it is actually very dangerous. Running down a very steep hill behind a 7-pound wheel of cheese can be very dangerous. In fact, the police have attempted to ban the event, but participants have refused to carry out the ban. Men and their cheese wheels cannot be separated so easily.  2  Simple: the cheese is set rolling down the hill, and the racers run down the hill after the cheese. However, as the cheese can reach speeds of up to 70 miles per hour, it rarely happens that someone catches the cheese.  3  .

In this festival, grown men jump over newborns, with their parents’ permission.  4   This custom has been observed since 1620; any onlookers who seem to be in need of “cleaning” also get involved in the event.

5  This Naked(裸)Festival is held in dozens of places throughout Japan every year, usually in summer or winter. Hidden somewhere in these men is one fully naked man, and touching him is believed to bring good luck.

A.So what happens during a cheese roll?

B.It is held in honor of Rama, the greatest of the Gods.

C.This event is very interesting.

D.The first to reach the bottom wins the cheese.

E.There is a Japanese festival where participants wear little clothing.

F.Everybody takes an active part in it.

G.Wearing scary costumes, the Spanish men attempt to “clean” babies of evil(邪恶).
