Reading is a good habit, but the problem is, there’s too much to read these days, and too little time to read every word of it. There are hundreds of skills to help you read more in less time, Here are two skills that I think are especially good.

Preview-if it's long and hat& Previewing is especially useful for getting a general idea of heavy, reading like long magazine articles and business reports.

Here’s how to preview

Read the first two paragraphs and the last two paragraphs carefully.

Then read only the first sentence of the other paragraphs.

Previewing doesn't give you all the details. It keeps you from spending time on things you don't really want-or need-to read.

Skim-if it’s short and simple. Skimming is a good way to get a general idea of tight reading-like popular magazines or the sports and entertainment of your daily paper.

Here’s how to skim.

Get your eyes to move fast. Sweep them across each line.

Pick up only a few key words in each line.

Everybody skims differently. You and I may not pick up the same words where we skim the same piece, but we'll get a similar idea of what it's all about.

You want to know about my staying in America, right? Well, to tell you the truth, it is really an eye-Opening experience to study here.

In China, I had English classes five times a week since fifth grade. However, I didn’t know how different textbook English could he from everyday English until I came to Hotchkiss School. Connecticut.

When I first studied English, I was told to say, "I am fine" when people say "How are you?"   But in the US, I found that people say, "I am good" or "I'm tired".

One day, someone greeted me with "What's up?"  It made me confused. I thought for a moment and then smiled because I didn’t know what to say.

Since then, I have discovered more and more differences between Chinese and us cultures.

To my surprise, US girls spend a lot of time in the burning sun to get a tan(晒黑). However, in China, girls try every possible way to get their skin paler, or "whiter".

I was also surprised by how hardworking US students are.

In China, schoolwork is almost everything, so we study hard and that's it. But here, a "good" student gets good grades, does a lot for the public and plays sports or music.

The kids here are so talented; I am starting to be sorry that I gave up playing the piano at an early age and that I have never though about sports.

It' s hard to make friends if you stay at home alone all the time. Get out of the house and do things that will put you in touch with(接触) other people. It's easier to make friends when you have similar interests.

Don't be afraid to show people what you're really good at. Talk about the things you like and do best. People will be interested in you if there is something interesting about you.

Look at people in the eye when you talk to them. That way, they'll find it easier to talk to you, or people may think you’re not interested in them and may stop being interested in you.

Be a good listener. Let people talk about themselves before talking about "me" .Ask lots of questions. Show an interest in their answers.

Try to make friends with the kind of people you really like, respect (尊敬),and admire (羡慕)-not just with those who are easy to meet. Be friendly with a 1ot of people. That way, you'll have a bigger group of people to choose from and have more chances for making friends.
