Bob,my younger brother, stays happy at home all day, staring at television.Because he has been brain-damaged from birth,he cannot  1  , hear and can see poorly through his remaining eye.

On a hot summer morning,Mum had written“VISIT GRANDMA”for Bob in large letters  we left for the nursing home.No one expected Bob to  3  the fact that this would probably be our  4  visit to my grandma.

We stepped into my grandma’s nursing room after getting off the car.The strokes(中风)had left Grandma trembling and she couldn’t  5  to anything around her-her mouth opened, her wide eyes shut and opened quickly and stared but   6  she didn’t see us at all.

We stood round the bed, smiling  7  ,and comforting her that everything would go 8 .This is tile first time that I had had   9   to say all I wanted.but I could think of  10  to say to her.“We love you,Grandma.”I said finally,  11   if I was reaching her.

Bob was standing quietly next to the window with his face brilliant red and tears rolling  12 his face.Just a few moments later, he  13  the group and made his  14  to Grandma’s bed.He leaned over her withered(萎缩)body and took her cheeks  15  in his hands. He stood there silently with his head bowed, and his cheeks wet with tears.

Those of us with  16  ears were deaf to the volumes being spoken between Grandma and Bob in that wonderful.wordless  17

I felt a flood of warmth rushing deep inside me.How  18  had been about Bob these years! Far better than the rest of us,he knew the true  19  of our visit. He knew it perfectly because he grasped it with his heart  20  with his hands. He had tile freedom, courage and honesty to reach out in pain to Grandma.

When I was young,I wished for a good car and a big house. That was my idea of success.I took all the advanced classes and tried to do well in the exams with my mind set on going to a key school.I just knew that I would somehow become famous and be able to afford the car and the dream house. All the way through junior years,my mind was planning this beautiful future.

Then in the eleventh grade, many losses changed my mind.First, one of my friends died at 16.Soon after,my great-grandmother passed away, followed by my beloved fourth-grade teacher These events left me not knowing what to do or where to go.Death had never touched me so closely.

After a long period of emptiness,it finally struck me:Life is not promised and neither is future success Though I was attempting to achieve material success,I was not enjoying my daily life.I realized that finding inner peace, purpose and happiness will stick with me forever and that is real success.

Enjoying life’s precious quirks(偶发事件 )makes an ordinary person more successful than a wealthy person who isn’t content and takes everything for granted. The summer before senior years,my attitude changed greatly.Instead of memorizing facts.I began learning skills.Instead of focusing oil the future,I focused on today and the many blessings and successes that came with it.

I still get excel lent grades, but now I devote weeks to studying instead of struggling for exams, and I think about the future with a deeper sense of meaning. For me.being successful means truly living life each day.

Recently, two professors of the University of Nebraska made a weekly television program in which they discussed worthwhile books.Even primary school graduates watched.listened, and learned,Therefore:it is not true that lessons on TV have not been taught in the United States.I doubt the statement that “programmers which inform and enrich the mind in a general manner are waste in schools”There is a need to teach directly by television if we take teaching in the broad sense of the term.

Direct teaching by television has been explained as a series of television lessons directly related to a particular classroom textbook to satisfy the needs of pupils and teachers in a particular subject.A teacher specialist who also knows television production techniques and uses the modem technology in a television studio to put across his subject will prepare each lesson.

Will such TV lessons do without the services of a classroom teacher or will they cost him his fame or jobs? No! In fact, without the classroom teacher to review the material, enlarge on it and answer questions that the students may bring up,such TV lessons would not be of very great value.

The children who watch ETV do so with different results---from very good to fair.Possibly, the programs are too similar or too serious Generally, they are not too long.Very likely, the children who benefit least are the slow learners However, it is believed that there is a bright future for ETV inside and outside the classroom. The time may come, when bigger and clearer screens will be used in the classroom, bigger and better programs will be exchanged between countries and more foreign experts will be brought in,listened to and followed by newcomers in the ETV field.

1.Which of the following suggests the programmed mentioned in paragraph l is popular?

    A.It was shown every week.

B.Worthwhile books were discussed in it

C.to explain his subject                                  D.to know what he is talking about

3.Which of the following is TRUE about ETV according to the text?

A.It requires a good command of modern technology

B.It call meet all the needs of both teachers and students

C.It is sure to help different students achieve good results

D.It can be valuable without classroom teachers

4.What would be the best title for the text?_______

A The Future of ETV                                 B.ETU—A New Way of Teaching

C.The Advantages and Disadvantages of ETV D.The Excitement of ETV

Dancing the night away

It is a measure of how little control I have over my own life that in middle March I am escorting (护送) a pretty young redhead to a debutante ball.(A formal presentation of young ladies when they reach the age of maturity. This is originally used in the past to introduce young ladies to society so that they could meet a possible marriage partner, so it was for the upper class. At a debutante ball, the expensively-dressed girls stand in a line to be introduced individually.Their fathers then walk them,arm-in-arm around the dance floor, followed by a waltz.)

    “Daddy, you OK?”she asks.

    “Never better”I lie.

    “Good.”she says,hugging my shoulder and giggling(咯咯笑)

Generally, deb balls belong to the upper class, and that is decidedly not us The other day, I was trying to decide which to buy-a garage door opener, or a DVD player Both were broken.yet we could afford to replace only one. That’s how“upper class”we are.

So it’s a mystery how we ended up at this deb ball, Two mothers are checking for alcohol.making sure the debs aren’t drinking.

Anyway, they won’t let the dads eat dinner till we“present”the girls.which means we have to escort our daughters around the dance floor one by one.as the mistress of ceremonies reads out the young lady’s accomplishments.

“Trish plans to attend Stanford where she will study molecular(分子)engineering.”“Dorothy hopes to grow food on Mars.”…

After the introductions we finally get to the Big Waltz. For the last month, the dads and daughters have all been taking lessons for the Big Waltz under the direction of the widow(遗孀)of Otto. Her gentle directions have worked miracles Suddenly, on this night.we are a well-organized team of 27 father-daughter dance pairs

The relative success of this Big Waltz comes as a huge relief to the mothers who have been planning this ceremony for six years and have been a little tense lately.

In the end, everything turned out OK at the deb ball. The 27 dads developed into a fairly supportive fellowship. And the little red-haired girl? She hugged my shoulder and giggled happily.making it all-the waltz lessons, the rental tuxedo(男士礼服),the l4 years of coaching softball-worth every awful-wonderful moment.
